RESULT: 1-1 ~ og . (h-t 0-0) . . . . SHAPE: 4-3-3
VENUE: the Amex, Falmer - tenth home match of twenty fixtures to date . Fri 8:00pm.
PRE-MATCH: everybody knew why we were now getting together outside on a chilly evening at end of the working week. Many Brighton fans had missed that last Boxing Day home game for a variety of reasons. This was designated a sell out, so presumably things were returning to revised normality.
WEATHER: cold but dry . . . GATE: 30,675
GRAHAM POTTER was open and honest as usual during prep for this regional clash. We sensed there was a big year ahead for him, our club, squad, ancillary support and fans to boot. The mission was to turn ambition into reality and get the job done.
GP selected an unusual line up, preferring a flat back four, behind a solid midfield with a diamond giving three up front.
INJURY: 5 Dunk, 12 Mwepu . . . SQUAD: 24 Duffy . . . AFCON: 8 Bissouma.
TEAM . . . . . . . . . . 1 Sanchez
. 34 Veltman, 4 Webster, 33 Burn, 3 Cucurella
. . . . . . 13 Gross, 14 Lallana, 10 Mac Allister,
. . . 11 Trossard . . . 15 Moder . . . 9 Maupay,
SUBS: 2 Lamptey (56),18 Welbeck (73),20 March (73)
BENCH: 16 Scherpen, 17 Alzate, 25 Caicedo, 28 Roberts, 42 Leonard, 58 Ferguson.
GOALS: 0-1 - 69 . a giveaway gift to visitors who profited from hosts failure to get in a block or tackle in a crowded area.
1-1 - 87 . yet more late attacking resulted in Maupay finding space from a deep March cross and firing the ball back across the area where a defender turned it in.
NOTED: Trossard looked o/s when one on one. 38 Gross had a penalty saved following VAR intervention. Maupay next had his effort chalked off for a foul on the keeper. Moder hits the bar after turnaround. Late drama from a Welbeck header that goes close.
YELLOWS: none for BHA.
CHANGES: 56 Lamptey for Lallana . 73 Welbeck & March for Veltman & Gross.
FIRST HALF: locals long ball game, in lieu of previous Prem wingback works, was fairly pleasing if accurate and actually gaining an end product. But the perfect method to possibly score one or more did not materialise and so it remained goalless.
SECOND HALF: Seagulls soon lost their prime influence down the middle due to injury.
This ongoing game of chess then appeared to tip from stalemate when Eagles swooped. A subdued north stand left an almost despairing domestic atmosphere from further flaccid on-pitch huff & puff.
That earlier no score bore now seemed acceptable as hosts habitually chased the game once more.
Words like deserve, perhaps cover a grey area between finites such as win, draw or lose. At end of the day Brighton got a point when failing to score by our own device.
Brighton fans knew from experience what had been witnessed. Strikers did not score, while Seagulls midfielders and defenders cannot open or add to tallies.
Thereby it is seen in black & white.
