memorable match: Season2 (H) - goals galore at a very early stage of our second domestic campaign at fortress Amex.
Season6 (H) Championship 24/9/16 - 2-0 ~ Murray 2.
Tykes were back in town after a two year absence and Albion were trying once more to establish winning runs at the Amex. Chris Hughton had gotten Seagulls into promotion contenders last campaign and expectaion was perhaps higher this time around. His squad was predictably very different to that of three terms ago (see below) under Oscar Garcia, although Bruno (captain) & LuaLua were still 1st 11 choices, while Forster-Caskey was out on a seasons loan. Hughton had rebuilt the squad in last couple of years with 'astute' signings in 2015. This continued into 2016, where Shane Duffy was now the biggest purchase in club history. Glenn Murray was back on a season long loan from Bournemouth. And Lewis Dunk and Solly March were two who had made it through the academy system. On the day 26k attended.
*** match report: Albion climbed into play-off places following a routine two goal victory. On a warm afternoon, shirt-sleeved fans were happy to see Seagulls score quickly and further dominate possession. They took the game to Tykes but netted initially on the counter. Bong cleared lines to Knockaert who made tracks up field and found Kayal square. His pass inside was duly clipped into the bottom corner by Murray (12min). Visitors repelled locals until half time and came out after the interval needing to go forward. But from an early f-k, blue & white shirts doubled the lead. Skalak put the ball into the area where Murray rose to glance inside the far post (48min). Norwood was already on for injured Kayal and Ref was having a mare, by bearing brunt of a noisy Amex audience. Hughton replaced Hemed with Baldock with fifteen minutes left to try and add to the tally. But bolstered defensive applications by introducing Sidwell for Skalak late in the day. Hughton said, 'as a team we are probably not as fluent as the best periods of last season. We have been the same in first half of last season but hope there is more to come from us.' Murray said, 'I didn't play much in the last six months. I'm getting used to rigours of the Championship, which is tough on the body. It's nice to be playing again.' Brighton fans thought he should have had a hat-trick, although his brace on the day and another clean sheet to boot sent them home in good mood.

There had merely been one match at the Amex during November and so Sussex fans got to our impressive home full of anticipation for a right December result against the Championship whipping boys in final position. Head Coach Oscar Garcia was now bringing back 1st team players who had previously been injured, including Bridcutt, Orlandi, Agustien, Andrews and Buckley, among others still out. The line-up on the bench was ok too, considering we had often used dev squad players to make numbers up this season. El-Abd and Calderon were both on there but Dunk went out on loan. LuaLua, Hoskins & CMS remained injured long term, although Ulloa was starting a long comeback into training. On a cool but dry night, a handfull of Barnsley support turned up.
*** match report: Albion lost this fixture with a truly awful display of pedestrian attacking until it was too late. Travellers hit us on the counter and waltzed thru our defence to open scoring too easily (35min). OG put Buckley on for all of second period action but we went two behind very quickly - to pin-point passing (50min). Upson headed in from a corner and immediately OG subbed again by introducing Agustien (63/64min). BHA stepped up a gear but over all were not flying in true Seagulls fashion. A happy band of delerious away fans went off back to Yorkshire in good spirits, however not only words rang in OG's ears - Brighton had been booed off at halftime. A lot of faithful wondered quite why the wheels appeared to have fallen off so tamely. Did we lack skills, method or was it all too difficult to compete in a pukka stadium at this level these days?

Season2 (H) 25/8/12 - 5-1 ~ Barnes 2, Bridge, Mackail-Smith 2.
Albion badly needed to win this fixture, thereby averaging just over a point per game. The problem beforehand was we hadn't scored in three matches, one of which was defeat at Swindon 3-0 in the League Cup. Poyet wanted to better a tenth place finish last term, so got in Wayne Bridge on loan and signed goalie Tomasz Kuszczak, Bruno Salter and Andrew Crofts for a second spell at BHA. He appeared to have sufficient cover via a seven man bench, although Tommy Elphick (Bournemouth) and Grant Hall (Spurs) had left, Matt Sparrow and Romain Vincelot were surplus to requirements and Will Hoskins was injured again. Youngsters Jake Forster-Caskey (Oxford) and Yasser Kazim (Luton) went out on loan.
*** match report: Having failed to score in the League Cup away debacle and during both opening league fixtures, Brighton netted inside five minutes. Noone's free-kick was spilled by Tykes keeper and Barnes immediately struck (4min). Next up in under a quarter of an hour was Bridge hammering one home from distance (14m). Then Albion gifted northern visitors a goal when Crofts took out an attacker, although Kuszczak nearly saved the pen (35m). Very soon afterwards Seagulls flew two clear again when Mackail-Smith diverted Barnes dig into the net (38m). Momentum remained with the home outfit for the second forty-five mins and BHA got a fourth shortly into this period. CMS flicked in his second following good work by Barnes and Noone (50m). Gus Poyet put on Harley and LuaLua to freshen midfield with twenty minutes to go. But Barnsley were well beat long before Barnes also bagged a brace, smashing in a cutback by LuaLua (81m). Poyet said, 'everything went our way and Barnsley paid the price for being here at the wrong time.' Poyet was very happy with the performance, albeit versus pretty poor opposition, praising the contribution of new players. He said, 'I think we are much more aggressive in attacking this year. The more we do it the more difficult it is going to be to play against us.' Brighton fans hoped GP had found the best eleven already and would continue with strong defence and attacking flair. Poyet said, 'now we are a little bit more solid. You know the back four. In forty-six games the more you keep clean sheets the closer to the top you are.'

Season1 (H) 6/11/11 - 2-0 ~ Greer, Harley.
Albion were finding out what the Championship was about and after an electrifying start, stuttered more than a bit as summer became autumn. Our small squad was affected by injuries and so Gus Poyet brought in some loan players. League1 heroes El-Abd and Elphick were long term injured and Dicker broke a leg. Big name signing Vicente got crocked and Hoskins was also sidelined. Gus shuffled the pack against moderate opposition and asked for revised selections to cut the mustard. It was the Sunday after bonfire night but dry and 19k attended at the Amex, which was to be the venue for a U19 international match later in the week.
*** match report: Brighton set off like a Seagull from hell but couldn't notch one from opening encounters of the second level kind. Barnsley gave good account of themselves and surprisingly both sides played football. Just before half time, when it appeared to be set for nil-nil, Greer got on the end of a set piece and netted (44min). Tykes threw a lot of effort into the second period but against run of play Albion broke and scored again. CM-S made a great solo run from deep, cut inside and had a dig that cannoned off the crossbar back into play. Harley arrived to slip the ball in from the ensuing melee (57m). Gus introduced Barnes with twenty mins left and tinkered with 433 again, after adopting 451 for a spell. Later on, wing-wizard Noone gave way to Buckley. BHA were pressed until the end by a lively visiting eleven and Taricco stood out for quality in a useful back five. This wasn't Poyet's preferred teamsheet but B'ton got a result and it bode well for team spirit and a degree of choice for places.

Seagulls needed to up the ante on the road, following a deteriorating sequence of away results since turn of the year. The full series to date was; ddl wdw wwd www lld, for w7 d5 l3 f19 a17 = 1.73pt/gm - worth about 40pt at that rate of progress to the overall total for a promotion push come May. Newcastle were out front with BHA just behind but the chasing play-off pack behind kept picking up good results and had closed to within 4pt to 3rd & 10pt to 6th place. What was needed now was victory at Oakwell in order to maintain the staus quo.
*** match report: Nearly 1400 travelling support, from all parts of the UK, were rewarded for their devotion with a first clear cut victory at Oakwell. Albion played better than of late in the first half but reached the interval still in goalless stalemate. From the get go in the second period Seagulls took the game to opposition and soon went ahead. Knockaert pushed up and fed Baldock who quickly clipped a half volley over the keeper (53min). Visitors then repelled subsequent Tykes attacks in search of an equaliser. And took a further grip on the contest when Knockaert again got the assist for Baldock to tap in (68min). Albion remained in control and Hughton persisted with the starting eleven in 442 shape to almost the very end. At the death he made two subs to see time out. Hughton said, 'those of us who have been in the game for a while know it can be so different come the next game if you don't do the things you do best. We were good today against a side in really good form. It is a good feeling.' Brighton fans were happy to be back at top of the division, with two tough home games coming next.

There was a touch of deja vu about this fixture - see below, season2. Brighton were again in the middle of a hectic schedule and three away games came in the space of eight days. Albion were pushing for play-offs and Tykes were threatened with relegation - again. During the run-in wins were more important than ever but unfortunately goals proved hard to come by. At last CMS was named on the bench for his first selection for over a year out coz of injuries. Oscar Garcia operated a squad system and so with a 451 shape, most players could slot in easily. But getting results from all the coaching was elusive for a man used to winning at Barca.
*** match report: The match started goalless and... it finished so. Barnsley lost a man for two bookables against sub LuaLua in the 76th min but Albion could not take advantage. CMS was immediately sent on to do his best, although it was a tough call. Tykes hit the bar, Albion missed chances and the contest proved a bruising encounter of the third kind. Ref had a mare and the crowd was hostile to say the least of Yorkshire direct speaking. Oscar said, 'in the last two games we have shown a lot of character. In the second half we played better and created chances. This is the way to go and win games. We put on an extra striker to create more chances.' Many Brighton fans though Seagulls had missed a trick and should have scored. They argued that is what the game is all about.

Season2 (A) 12/3/13 - L 2-1 ~ Ulloa.
This fixture was moved from middle of February due to Tykes involvement in FA Cup5. Gus Poyet was not happy to be playing another away on top of two already completed inside eight days - Bristol and Bolton. Albion needed a result to elevate into p-o places but had lost form on the road. On paper we had a better squad than last year (see below) but hadn't really improved on points achieved. From last year's eleven, merely Calderon, El-Abd, Bridcutt and Buckley turned out again. Poyet's mantra was to control games thru possession and passing but a lot of clubs had found us out and pressed the ball. Seagulls were not too happy when engaged in a fight and our Spanish influence looked lightweight on cold English winter afternoons and evenings. On the night it was bitterly cold and a few northern exiles turned up in support of BHA travellers.
*** match report: Albion went down the pan again and Ulloa missed a late penalty to equalise. Tykes took the lead when El-Abd blundered (15min) and visitors first half performance was poor. Gus put on LuaLua to boost pace and tempo soon after the break and Ulloa levelled with a header from Calderon's cross before the hour mark (59min). But Ref gave Barnsley a pen five mins afterwards and we had a montain to climb (64min). Crofts got on and then Barker and they had an impact. Albion were going 424 at the death and battering the home outfit but they held out. Gus said, 'if anyone thinks Barnsley deserved to win, I should resign.' We knew how he felt. There was no justice this week but don't you get what you deserve?

This fixture was the last of our first season back in the Championship since middle of the extended Withdean era. Brighton had a good year too, after coming up from League1 twelve months previously. But we'd missed out on a play-off spot, mainly due to poor away form and contending with some pretty big clubs in the division to boot. Albion had not won on the road during March & April and you had to go back to early Feb for the win. The good news was capacity for 30k at the Amex next term was approved by B&HCC. There was also a 4k waiting list for season tickets, which would help income for Tony Bloom to increase Gus Poyet's squad budgets.
*** match report: The game at Oakwell was nothing to write home about and kinda end of season fare. Tykes had avoided actual involvement in the drop-zone dog-fight when Portsmouth took a ten point hit much earlier in the campaign. Albion huffed and puffed all match, with Vicente pulling strings from all over the middle third. Gus made a double swop after an hour, although it seemed routine rather than inspired. But as a few more chances came and went and as usual, Albion still found it difficult to convert one of them. This was typical of our season since getting as high as fourth a few weeks beforehand. Brighton fans were not hopeful of hanging on to Vicente for '12/13 and by all accounts we required a few players of something like his Prem claibre in August too. Gus was already planning for the future and by and large, we were pretty positive in the stands as well.
