ALBION EASILY OUTCLASSED AND FAIL TO SCORE
RESULT: 0-3 . (h-t 0-2) . SHAPE: 4-4-1-1
VENUE: the Amex, Falmer - sixteenth home match of thirty-two fixtures to date.
PRE-KICKOFF: it was a cool evening around vacant pitch-side seating but previously things had been warming up for domiciled tv fans viewing both ends of the division.
Clubs chasing the current top five were after an august August place to enter Europe, while the bottom six outfits were as seriously engaged in brutal July dogfights for elite survival.
WEATHER: cool & cloudy.
GRAHAM POTTER had nearly a fully fit squad from which to select a starting eleven. He rang the changes with another unexpected line up.
Duffy replaced injured Webster and Connolly came in for Maupay. Montoya was also picked, although Mooy was not, as Lamptey shifted tactically into midfield.
TEAM . . . . . .
. 22 Montoya, 4 Duffy, 5 Dunk, 33 Burn
. 2 Lamptey, 24 Propper, 6 Stephens, 8 Bissouma
. . . . . 10 Mac Allister . . . . . 44 Connolly
BENCH: 27 Button, 23 Schelotto, 13 Gross, 17 Murray.
11 Trossard (46), 7 Maupay (46), Mooy (81), Bernardo (81), 20 March (87).
GOALS: 16 - an attacker got goal-side, shifted his feet and let fly thru legs to beat Ryan on the near post.
29 - a close offside call went the way of redshirts who followed up with a low pot shot inside an upright.
50 - a classic counter attack saw travellers motoring forward at pace before smashing the ball past hapless Ryan.
INCIDENTS: United strike a post early, as they show super shooting skills from the word go.
YELLOWS: none. United showed one card.
SUBS: 46 - Trossard & Maupay replaced Lamptey & Propper. 81 - Mooy & Bernardo inserted for Mac Allister & Dunk. 87 - March for Connolly.
Seagulls switched to 442 for the second period following that failed experimental formation of the first half.
SYNOPSIS: visitors showed intent from the outset with slick moves and pinpoint accuracy. Albion went two behind within half an hour and could not live with marauding opposition. It was not that hosts were sluggish, merely that they posed no real threat in the final third. Potter had little option but to alter things after turnaround.
The third killer goal put this evening match to bed early and Red Devils eased down as blue & white tried to wake up to staying in this quickly lost game as late as possible.
MoM - Dunk, taken off only as a precaution.
NUMBERS: poss 37%-63%, on target 2-6, off target 6-6, corners 4-5, fouls 10-8, yellows 0-1, subs 5-5 (5/9).
CONSEQUENCES: it could have been worse and with a six point cushion to the drop zone, there is still breathing space to spare approaching a hectic new month ahead. However a win from the next fixture was important to maintain advantage.
