10 things you didn't think you'd know about -
Rotherham
1 It's a pre-Industrial Revolution type of old place and medieval at heart and that's not only about their original football club!
2 They are a town in South Yorkshire's Don Valley, as opposed to being on the river Rother which forms part of our own East Sussex boundary.
3 Ironworks established there in 1746 and it could be 2046 before Rotherham Utd produce more metal for their almost empty trophy cabinet.
4 In 1907 Rotherham County moved to Millmoor, the Millers present home and played in the Midlands League. In 1919 they joined the Football League and then amalgamated with Rotherham Town, to truly become United in 1925.
5 Utd have been up and down all divisions equivalent to the Championship and Leagues 1 & 2. They never made it into the elite and even lost the first League Cup final in extra time. Whatever!
6 Tommy Docherty, Emlyn Hughes and Archie Gemmel are ex-managers. Ask your dad to explain why they didn't have much loyalty to small-time S Yorks.
7 Ken Booth a millionaire, saved the club from er, destruction. Was it something to do with his scrap metal business surrounding their ramshackle home?
8 There are footy references to The Merry Millers. Someone is 'avin a larf, probably from a very safe long distance away .
9 If you go to Millmoor, see if those floodlights are still on Goldstone Ground style pylons - they are just taller than merely tall.
10 Does the pitch slope or is it the John Smiths' effect?
