10 things...
Port Vale
1 There are five towns in the Potteries and none of them are called Port Vale. In 1906 it still sounded better than Cobridge Athletic.
2 Vale played at the Old Recreation Ground in Hanley from 1912. So decided they had pottered around Burslem - Longport enough and would Stoke things up a bit.
3 Having acquired FL status in 1919, the second division side thought they would try to win the FA Cup. Unfortunately fired up dreams cracked open in a red hot kiln of knockout competition, leaving 'em glazed over and a touch potty.
4 Two regional third divisions meant Port Vale were some years up north, or alternatively down south. As if they hadn't been stuck in the middle of a conurbation identity crisis previously as original Potteries representatives.
5 After WW2, Valiants moved to Vale Park in Burslem, on the site of a new 'Wembley'. Trouble was, a final capacity figure couldn't get near that of local Stoke, let alone outer London.
6 The fourth division suited Vale following relegation and a financial scandal. They were at home being rock bottom again.
7 Valiants actually got out of the basement in 1983 then failed to win in 15 games starting next season. Yeah, you know what happened next.
8 John Rudge turned Port Vale's fortunes around and got 'em into div2 via play-offs. When Stoke dropped to div3 in 1990, Potteries fires went out except in Burslem.
9 The 90s were very good for Valiants. But we shall not go into scripted details and make it just another Midlands soap opera.
10 Two million pounds received for Gareth Ainsworth in 1998. That was some profit for a club almost destined for receivership.
