10 Things.... (Oldham )

10 things you didn't think you'd know about

Oldham
1 They're just a small town in Greater Manchester. Although this yarn has been spinning for ages, they might finally cotton on.
2 Cozens, Girtin, Prout, Sandby, Cox, Constable and Turner are not an original defence and midfield line-up but early English watercolour painters, who exhibited at Oldham's art gallery.
3 In 1899 Oldham County went bust and a junior side then occupied their Athletic Ground for a year. This proved much better than their existing pitch, stuck outside a bloody great Cotton Mill.
4 As Athletic rose through lower leagues elsewhere, they did a deal with landlord brewers JW Lees to return to their roots. Thus, again they got to cross 'new' Boundary Park and also get local beer on tap there.
5 By 1915 Latics had gotten to within one point of a prestigious Division 1 title but blew it. The point being, only big clubs rule in Lancashire.
6 Oldham dropped to div3 north by WW2 and were then 'relegated' when the fourth division was formed in 1958. It was a way of saying, they really were less than third rate nationally.
7 Orange was the primary shirt colour in 1965, during those swinging sixties. That's when we told 'em - ooh, Oldham!
8 JW Lees had poured good money after bad down the drain and by 1986 funded a plastic pitch. You should see the beer bottles bounce off that super xxxx surface!
9 1990 and Cup runs of legend. However, a fixture backlog provided footy overload and promotion burn out big time - aahhh!
10 Athletic fans had a 'stop the rot' campaign in 1998 against JWL brewery drying up investment. You have to watch who you decide to drink with in this intoxicating game.
