10 things...
Chesterfield
1 Romans turned up and then Anglo Saxons to play at 'Cestrefeld', in a century long before Third Division North got going.
2 St Mary and All Saints is a fine example of 14th century church architecture. Pity the firm who built the spire were as crooked with payments for services rendered, as allegedly pointed at Saltergate.
3 There is an ancient street called the Shambles but it's actually in much better nick than anything at that Recreation Ground.
4 In 1688 they plotted at their place, to drop keeper of the faith James 2 and transfer in William 3. So why isn't their shirt orange with 'standard' numbers then?
5 George Stephenson supervised building of the railway in town. He was buried there, having hit the buffers prior to trains of away supporters arriving from Manchester to Liverpool on line.
6 Spireites ground is near Foljambe Road, historically named after a prolific local family who still have decendants at home - usually all over Spion Kop each fortnight.
7 In '05 Hardy was sold to Liverpool for 500 pounds. It was a new record for a goal-keeper - er, over 100 years ago!
8 Chesterfield once played Darlington on an adjacent cricket pitch, when the footy one was frozen. The Ref was called Fogg but we got a bit misty about summer or winter sport and seeing lbw or off-side decisions clearly?
9 The sixties saw Spireites in the fourth division. Well, first they went to the bank, sold Gordon Banks and then couldn't keeper goals out of their net for a blank cheque.
10 They once looked like achieving promotion, from what is now the Championship - yeah, in 1947 or sixty years ago!!
