10 Things.... (Cambridge )

Ten things...

Cambridge
1 Romans built their Via Devana at the place to link Colchester with Chester by road. Thus visiting hordes of away followers could also take in a bit of civilised culture before tribal contests.
2 Come Doomsday, Normans booked a spot on Castle Mound and made home fixtures all-ticket to local peasantry. It was an early form of segregation under corresponding feudal FA rules.
3 In medieval times a seat of learning developed around colleges on fields by the river Cam. Somebody got a football out and they took a punt to try and bridge a wide skills gap.
4 In 1869 a women's college was founded to allow female teams to compete at University Challenge and play likes of Doncaster Belles once a term for yet more sport.
5 Before WW1 Abbey United formed and played on various lands outside the city, including one known as Celery Trenches. Cambridge City already were a Southern League team close to town and were then considered pick of the proverbial crop.
6 In 1933 United moved to the Abbey Stadium on Newmarket Road. They drew support from an outlying population, plus a few students of the beautiful game studying history and travel.
7 When United entered Southern League as FL clubs expanded to four countrywide divisions, they shocked staid City. It didn't take a student of stats long to realise the town wasn't big enough for both of 'em by football association in 1958.
8 In the seventies United rose from div4 to div2 aided and abetted with big Ron on the joystick. Apparently he held little formal qualifications but left with an honourable Doctorate from the University of life.
9 In the eighties U's were back at the bottom and seeking re-election. Turner and Beck were men who turned things around. They were effectively from the noble and distinguished College of Long Balls.
10 Roy McFarland steered a new generation for a new century to return to good times. But success at Cambridge was always going to be split equally with failure, depending on which side of their river local supporters called home.
