Ten things...
Bury
Bury had two notable sons. Kay who invented the flying shuttle and Peel who instigated the flying squad. Both were prototypes of latter day 424 systems with flying wingers.
Earls of Derby had extensive estates in this area and set up Gigg Lane for mass attendance in 1885. Well actually he thought it was for meetings of Unitarians and Wesleyans but didn't realise they were worshiping local footy elevens.
By 1900 Bury were a top outfit, having attained FL div1 status. They had been playing teams like Newton Heath and Ardwick down the road in Manchester. This was before fickle evolution spawned those two into super clubs Utd and City.
Before WW1 Bury were back in div2. The Earl thought they were past their sell-by and gifted the ground to them post war He was a typical Utd fan and could spare a little thinking of others for once in their forever fun-filled lives.
After WW2 life at Gigg Lane experienced depths of a bleak existence in div3. Long suffering fans came down from the moors and wondered what they'd really fought for.
The sixties were swinging for the Shakers and any number of movers enjoyed div2 hospitality. But even at verdant Gigg Lane, grass was somehow always greener elsewhere.
The seventies and eighties served to highlight differences between div1 in Manchester and div4 in surrounding foothills of despair. There was a sense of being true dirty northern bastards, distant from a greater rotten centre.
Ellis and Ternent turned things around during the nineties. Warnock then came in and yep, screwed it yet again.
In 1999 the Football League switched to using goal difference to decide relegation issues. Guess which team this affected the most by standards of 20th century post mortem.
Into the noughties and er, oh dear. Anybody know another mega-rich aristocrat to help bail 'em out?
