10 things you didn't think you'd know about -
Bristol City
1. There is a term, 'all ship-shape and Bristol fashion', which really describes a 19th century 4-3-2-1 'boat' formation City once tried to float.
2. 'Paying on the nail' similarly refers to financial dealings of old, in that famous pillared city Exchange, where any vintage player could be transferred for mere corn.
3. In 1864 Brunel built Clifton suspension Bridge in a high, affluent part of town. It spans effluent below that worryingly runs red between August and April, to overflow the Ashton Road area.
4. Bedminster was where Bristol City started as a football club. When turning professional, they incorporated Bedminster FC and then moved 'back' to their previous rival's Ashton Gate ground, which was actually located in south Bristol. Confusing isn't it!
5. 'Big-time' City were once only runners-up in division 1 - in the season of 1906-7. It's been one hundred years and counting... and counting... and...
6. The Robins were left with red faces when falling from div1 to div4 in the early eighties and went bust. By a miracle of faith, re-formed City plc was quickly promoted and not just commercially.
7. Andy Cole when rejected by Arsenal, arrived in Bristol and hit the heights. Ashley Cole hit the heights, rejected Arsenal and arrived in ....
8. Gillingham manager Tony Pulis sold Ade Akinbiyi to City. He sold him twice over when taking the vacant post at Ashton Gate - doubling his money to boot!
9. The 'Flower of Bristowel' or Scarlet Lychnis, can be spotted on slopes around Ashton. I almost didn't want to say just like west country, red shirted Cider 'Eds, high up in the Atyeo stand. But hey, only almost.
10. Bristol Airport really is quite nearby. There is probably less of a pat-down there, than received from over zealous stewards in the Wedlock Stand at that 'high security' away end.
