Below is a list of clubs Brighton play for '13/14 Championship season (C), in our THIRD year at FALMER.
Over all there is quite a competitive and classy bunch on offer. Due to the yoyo nature of annual up/down scenarios, some previous opponents are now in our division. Teams with Premiership credentials will test us, as they aim to hit the big time once more. By anyones standards it will be one hell of a scrap (yeah, we say that every time!) - onward and upward!!
Our next fixture is always highlighted.
Albion Squad:
| 1 | Peter Brezovan | FRINGE - Keeper; '9/10 - December signing and straight into L1 action. Tall and athletic with good handling and reasonable kicking. Was at Swindon and comfortable with Gus. Very mixed form between good and bad apps. '10/11 L1; Fractured wrist in pre-season out 2 months then on bench. FA Cup goalie and did ok. Sub late in lg run-in - done good. '11/12 CHAMPS - some issues apparent before taking any hands-on approach at short notice. On bench, done good on late seasonal debut. Kept place with FA Cup run. Held gloves but kinda got beat once too many times. '12/13 - did not make bench early doors. Looked shaky on debut. Out with washing thereafter. Got contract extended. |
| 2 | BRUNO Saltor Grau | SQUAD - fullback; 31yo signed in '12 close season from Spain. Was with Vicente at Valencia. Comes from Barcelona but played for other clubs on the costas. No nonsense defender who can adapt to crazy English Championship. Reported to receive pay in pounds rather than euros. '12/13 - first choice. Something of a fans favourite. Got class, skill, flair and charisma. Got several Mom awards. Heel/calf strains etc and fragile. |
| 3 | GORDON GREER | 1ST 11 - Central def; 29yo moved from Swindon for couple of hundred grand plus pocket change. Comes from Jockland and turned out for Kilmarnock once or twice. Made club capt. '10/11 L1; Sent off twice and bans. Thoroughly unprofessional and needed to rethink aggressive flaw. Injured calf, marked time with family issues. Was on bench, then on field. First choice, upped his game. No stroll in the park though. Generally commanded rearguard with solid displays. Red for a Glasgow kiss in run-in. In L1 players team. '11/12 CHAMPS - capable of leading L1 title winners in the Championship. Injured calf again. Struggled a tad with good attackers at this level. Sent off again. Plenty of gob but did ok. Abdominal probs. Poy runner-up. '12/13 - looked secure enough at BHA attempt to step up. Useful pairing with El-Abd. Trouble against good strikers in the air. Hamstring prob. Got contract extended. |
| 4 | (DEAN HAMMOND) | LEFT - midfield; 29yo on loan from So'ton. Returned to Albion after leaving for Colchester in 2008 during interim years at Withdean. Product of Seagulls kids and Sussex lad did seven years at BHA. Was capt for So'ton and experience at lev2. Expected to be used in lieu of Bridcutt or Crofts and can score goals when getting forward. '12/13; useful addition who did impress fans old and new. Won a place and knew what was needed at standard. |
| 5 | Lewis Dunk | FRINGE - defensive minded central player. '9/10 - as 18yo got fast tracked from youth side and immediate debut for 1st 11 after signing pro terms. Boy done good and big prospect for Falmer. Started with Wimbledon kids and lives locally so is an MKD loss. Snapped up by BHA and the ex-U18 wasn't six foot three then either. Jumped in pecking order. In '10/11 development squad. Injured foot - plaster. Cup tie home debut. Able defense deputy in derby and got class. '11/12 CHAMPS - got a shot from day1 in season and done good in tough div. Five yellows early doors. Back four reg then dropped. U21 call up. Ten yellows by New Year. '12/13 - stopped going the right way. Stuck on bench and not gaining experience. Got a run then sent off. Involved in court case. |
| 6 | ADAM EL-ADB | OFFERED DEAL - Cent def; Fought his way back into '08/9 L1 side after injury and formation changes. Searched for the hero inside himself and at level. Not first choice and reached crossroads in career. '9/10 L1; Mare H/A apps in heavy defeats. Selected by default. Got it together - fighting displays. Sent off in reg home horror show and better away. Injured foot. Signed new deal and appreciated by GP. Returned and big job on. Got a goal and Gus really liked him more. '10/11 L1; A-ok and kept shirt. 5 yellows. MoM more than once. Broken nose. Beware the Egyptian - got a goal too. Injured - thigh wound needed stitches. Excellent performances through season. 10 yellow cards - oh dear. Done hamstring but quick recovery. Voted PoY. Fractured foot - out for start of '11/12. CHAMPS - fits in with Latin hard man ethos but could he come back on top of his game? Became regular. Won an Egypt cap. '12/13 - been a revelation under Gus. Did the do and not bad for a guy under six feet tall. Ten yellows. Egypt call up. |
| 7 | Will Hoskins | SQUAD - forward; '11/12 - joined Albion in close season for 500k when Bristol R snatched our hand off. Good on the ball and played at higher level before ending up out west. Got some history at Rotherham and Watford. Useful record of goals to apps, getting 17 for Rovers prev term. '11/12 CHAMPS - Injury niggles at start of season. Got an away goal on debut as sub. Found it difficult to get selected to start. Injured yet again. Went to Sheff U on loan for rest of season. Injured and surgery. '12/13 - transfer talk abounded but another injury took hold. Wanted games but crocked knee - surgery, out for season. Contract extended. |
| 8 | ANDREW CROFTS | SQUAD - midfield; 28yo came back to BHA in '12 from Norwich after two seasons away at higher level. Had spells with Gillingham following youth apps for Chelsea. Very able in the engine room and likes to get forward to take a chance. '12/13 - got injured but coulda been bigger asset this term. Lost edge and below par. |
| 9 | ASHLEY BARNES | SQUAD - Forward; '9/10 L1 - bit of a target man got in from Plymouth. 20yo liked to mix it up front and had been watched with regard to future prospects. Scored on debut and did ok as sub. Got more - nice finisher. Not a true lone front man, more an inside forward. Hold-up okish and needed a partner but did get goals. Made decision for permanent move. '10/11 L1; Found it tough and needed to be quicker when ball at feet. Scored volley to open account. Got chances but goal ratio did improve. Twice got brace and coulda had 2 hat-tricks. Missed plenty of opportunities after that. Injury niggles. Useful lg1 form and scored as impact player. 20 goal target reached. '11/12 CHAMPS - first choice for strike partner and delivered as sub. Got early apps and scored in them too. Needed better hold-up play. Struggled with this standard at times. Sent off - violent conduct. Did variety of roles and defends too. Leading scorer too. '12/13 - hey, Gus says lay off him! Got picked regularly and good in fits and starts. Had to be at best to impress and that meant scoring goals. SENT OFF TWICE. Long suspension. Contract extended. |
| 10 | (Stephen Dobbie) | LEFT - striker; 29yo Scot from Swansea in '12 transfer window. Expected back-up for CMS and is prolific scorer in Championship. Been at Blackpool so knows what seaside delights have to offer. Not tall therefore talk of targetman ongoing. '12/13 - wanted to hit the net running but... Went on loan to Palace. |
| 11 | ANDREA ORLANDI | 1ST 11 - Spanish midfielder; signed from Swansea at Aug '12 deadline. 28yo got a two year deal. Most experience in Championship (50 apps) and lg1 (19 apps). Has played wide but is creative centrally and is versatile to boot. Fee undisclosed but not thought to be cheap. '12/13 - straight off the bench and no back number. Got flair but a bit too clever for our lot. Broke rib. Tough league to play in for tricky customer. |
| 12 | Craig Mackail-Smith | SQUAD - striker; 2.5+ million pound pre-season '11/12 buy from Peterboro. He was shown Falmer by Gus and with the financial muscle of Tony Bloom, said 'yes' to become biggest BHA transfer deal. Looked quality prev league1 and a cut above journeyman forwards. Started in non-league in the southeast and a Scottish international by reason of the Mac bit. All but reached 100 goals for Posh over four seasons. Championship experience. '11/12 CHAMPS - Hit the net to get off mark and quickly added more. Goal for Scots in Euro comp qualifier. Worked hard but lacked service and therefore chances to score. Got a black eye too. Goal drought but got one from off bench. Disappointing goal total. '12/13 - considered special by Gus but not always lone front man. In and out of form and injuries. Achilles prob curtailed season. |

| 14 | INIGO CALDERON | SQUAD - Right back; offered contract at end of '9/10. Nasty hip injury curtailed short term success. Returned as Godfather Gus fav boy. '10/11 L1; Got to capt side on day1. Done well and liked to be up and back on right flank. Couple of cracking goals and all. Pretty fair full-back, needed to be tight defensively. Red card spoiled decent record. Slight loss of form in mid season, although super late season goals. Regular selection and voted in lg1 players team. PoY candidate. '11/12 CHAMPS - gave it a right pop, to see how far it goes. 5 Yellows & ban. Keyhole surgery on knee. Stunning strike for first goal. Lost his place but returned. Stand-in captain. '12/13 - competition for place and second choice. Competitive and likes to go forward again. Sent off at Leeds in match 45. Contract extended. |

| 16 | Casper Ankergren | SQUAD - Keeper; 30yo Danish custodian with experience at Leeds in '9/10. Got a couple of years, signing just before first fixture. '10/11 L1; Got lucky at times and in/out form. Strong hands and regular saves away apps - many clean sheets. Not too convincing around the area. But did get PoM for Sept and Mar - clean sheets too. Beat three times in high scoring matches. Wound up crowds with slow play. Didn't chuck himself around too much. '11/12 CHAMPS - knew the score and it meant keeping things cleaner. Off the boil as campaign hotted up at this level - needed to up it fast. Dropped but back after Steve Harper left. Not comanding in area on crosses. Left on bench. '12/13 - guaranteed seat on bench. FA Cup flop. Failed to challenge for gloves. |
| 17 | (Ryan Harley) | LEFT - midfielder; bought in during beginning at Falmer and Gus was very interested year before too. 26yo playmaker from Swansea went straight in for debut with League Cup tie at Amex. '11/12 CHAMPS - Liked to get forward and attack, also created opportunities for strikers and wingmen to take. Stunning goal from free kick. Then tad off the boil. Got ability but Champ's is fair standard. Went off radar then tendon probs. '12/13 - got some inclusion in 18. Went to MK Dons on loan. |

| 19 | LEONARDO ULLOA | 1ST 11 - striker; 26yo Argentine target-man with European passport. Got from Almeria in Spain for supposed 2mill and a few Euros for spending. Played for Castellon in Spain after three clubs in S America. Moved in 2010 to Almeria and got 48 goals in 102 apps. Top scorer in La Liga2 last term. Favourite food - via local chip shop now. Looked big and awkward - jury out. Hat trick hero. Took to the English game like an old centre forward. |

| 21 | DAVID LOPEZ MORENO | OFFERED DEAL - midfield; right-sided player from Athletic Bilbao in Spain. 29yo got a one year deal in '12 and made over 150 apps in La Liga. Technically ok and likes to attack. Should be quality extra to BHA Spanish group and knows a few swear words already. Now one of five amigos. '12/13 - looked ok without setting the place alight. Superb at set pieces. Fans liked Spanish Dave - bit of a character. |

| 23 | Torbjorn Agdestein | FRINGE - striker; 18yo from Norway got goals in div2 there. Has U19 credentials. Big, blond and bit of a Viking marauding thru English defences. '10/11; into dev group and short-listed for move upwards at Falmer Academy. Notched reserve goals and going in right direction. Signed 1yr deal. '11/12 CHAMPS - got a squad chance during injury crisis. Meanwhile gets goals in dev team. Was on loan to Bath City. FAC3 sub. Norway U21 call up. Signed new contract and useful prospect. '12/13 - couldn't make an impact this term. |
| 24 | (MATTHEW UPSON) | LEFT - cent-def; 33yo on loan from Stoke. England international in the noughties with 21 caps. Has 380 apps with clubs like Arsenal, Reading, Palace and West Ham. Been kicking his heels this term and keen to proved he is no has been. Thinks Brighton has more to offer than rock. Showed some class when up to speed. |
| 25 | KAZENGA LUALUA | SQUAD - Winger; loaned from Newcastle '9/10. 19yo is a brother of Pompey's Congolese striker Lomana. Was ultra quick, can play l or r and a crowd pleaser. Done v good and form better. Got subbed - injured leg. Went home but came back. Remarkable recovery. Same pace but where was the quality? Then hamstrung in more ways than one. '10/11 L1; Gus got him again until New Year at least. Stunning first senior goal and faster than ever. Subbed away app - back and needs to be fresh. On fire and can be an inferno. Hot shot or what? Loose cannon and dangerous. Injured by rash tackle - carried off. Broken ankle - out for season. '11/12 CHAMPS - returned on loan and had to deliver for BHA. Hamstring probs. Had more probs trying to beat Championship defenders. Signed permanently but was on bench. Late rocket equaliser as sub. '12/13 - gotta work on full game. Impact player only. |
| 26 | LIAM BRIDCUTT | 1ST 11 - midfield; 21yo initially signed for five months to fill in as defensive cmf. Product of Chelsea youth system and hailed from Reading. Had played in L1 as a loan player and sent off at W'dean to boot. Knew this job would do him a hellava lot of good and clicked with what Gus wanted on a mission to the Championship. '10/11 L1; Straight into JPT debacle and ok apparently. Second choice as holding m-f when Kish rested. Small bundle of energy and knocked about, got it done A-ok. FA Cup apps. Straight red for bad tackle - ban 3. Done good in diamond shape. Quality displays in holding role. Got a knock or two. Stunning volley for first pro goal and late match winner. Worthy signing at L1. '11/12 CHAMPS - regular pick for destroyer role but beware yellow peril. Stepped it up. Worked hard but tough to shine in average line-up. Then got loadsa mom awards and top man. 10+ cards. PoS and deserved to be. '12/13 - improved and did so again. Contract extended. Done well and easily held his own. 10 yellows. Scotland call up. PoS award again. |
| 27 | (Mauricio Taricco) | LEFT - defender; went back into training as stop-gap left back. Played in reserves. Pulled calf muscle in charity game. Thought of the gain but remembered the pain. Kept his hand, er boot, in. Made 1st 11 debut after six years out. FAC app and sent off aet - oh dear! Apparently, not quite so quiet a reputation. Assisted equaliser in FAC2 stalemate. FL debut as right back. '11/12 CHAMPS - started some games. Retired as player but emergency sub. Came back again and sent off for verbal abuse. What message did he send out then? Ban then MoM - well, feck me gently! Injured. Coaching duties only again. Suspended as coach. |
| 28 | (WAYNE BRIDGE) | LEFT - left back; 31yo here on loan for '12/13 from Man C. Ex-England regular from recent era. Been around the block and was with Chelsea. Hates Terry allegedly. Prem experience and quality. At top of Gus wish-list and a massive positive to actually tick that box. '12/13 - Absolute Prem class and shoo-in for any lev2 side. |
| 29 | TOMASZ KUSZCZAK | 1ST 11 - keeper; 30yo from Poland signed 2y deal for BHA second season at Falmer in '12. Ex Man Utd and Polish Int. Came via WBA in 2.1mill deal to MU in 2007. '12/13 - no.1 was in his hands. Looked like the keeper we needed & remained consistent. Mighta commanded six yard box better. |
| 30 | WILL BUCKLEY | SQUAD - winger; set club record for dosh spent when arriving from Watford for one million quid in June 2011. Tall for a creative flanker but also gets goals. Half decent turnouts for Rochdale over a couple of previous seasons. Gus got Tony to check his pocket change and they took a heafty punt on the kid. '11/12 CHAMPS - Super sub on debut with equaliser then v late match winner. Injured hamstring. Delayed return to action. Got another stoppage winner as super-sub. Not too regular but scored goals anyway. '12/13 - repayed some of big fee. But had more to offer. Kinda lost scoring touch. |

| 32 | Yaser Kasim | FRINGE - 19yo m-f prospect from Spurs '08/9 youth set-up success. In development group and likes B'ton, even with a steep pebble beach. From Iraqi family but thru sands of time, understands global footy culture. '10/11 Done good on last day debut. Mom in Sussex Senior Cup. Part of trophy winning reserve side in Combination league. FAC3 sub. '12/13 - Gone to Luton (Conf) on loan. |
| 33 | George Barker | FRINGE - striker; kid has been around Albion for a while and came thru youth ranks. Considered worthy of a pro future at the club and time will tell. Went on loan Barnet. In squad due to shortage of strikers. |
| 34 | Ben Sampayo | FRINGE - defender; 19yo ex-Chelsea schollar got a debut start for Jan 2012 in FA Cup r3 at the Amex. Played left back and was ok against non-league opposition. Knows how to play and although booked, did a useful wingback role. On loan at Barnet. |
| 35 | Jake Forster-Caskey | FRINGE - Mid-field or forward. Youngest ever teenager (16 and a little bit) to turn out for first team. Not big but hey, man enough to compete in FL and got the scars to prove it. Gus didn't rush him and included in new '10/11 develoment squad. Got England U17 credentials. World is his oyster if he can crack it. FAC5 app and looked Prem quality. '11/12 CHAMPS - gonna make the grade at some point in future. Sub on last day of 2011. Scored on full debut at New Year and on list for a reg place. Goal again in FAC3 on second start. Got crocked. '12/13 - got a bright future. Signed for another couple of seasons at least. Went on loan to Oxford in L2. |
| 36 | Roland Bergkamp | FRINGE - striker; 20yo and six foot three from Dutch club Excelsior. Nephew of Dennis and apparently could be a scoring menace as well. Got a two year deal and Gus says he's one for the future. Keen to be here and who could blame him. Lots to learn at Falmer... Injured . On loan at Rochdale. '12/13 - got some way to go. Gone on loan to Venlo in Holland. |
| 37 | Anton Rogers | FRINGE - forward; kid got a chance for half an hour in front of 18k at the Amex in FAC3. Not disgraced and looked well coached (as other DS players) by Luke Williams. On loan at Exeter. |
| 38 | Brennan Dickenson | FRINGE - striker; youngster came in from non-league Dorchester but knows about pro football. Spotted by Barry Lloyd on a scouting mission and encouraged to join BHA via new coaching set up. Kid sees it as a progressive move to establishing a career. Went out to Chesterfield then AFC Wimbledon. |
