Season10, 4th Premier League (H) Mon 26/10/20 - 1-1 ~ og.
Match played behind close doors - no fans attended due to covid epidemic national precautions inder lockdown 2. Albion had hosted WBA for a pre-season friendly also behind closed doors in early September. It followed a successful 'crowd' test event here the previous week against Chelsea, during ongoing covid pandemic protocols & preps. Reserve keeper Button signed for Brom prior to the friendly kickoff, having hardly featured between the sticks in two Prem seasons at BHA. We'd not met Baggies very much during this century, although bizarrely they were our opponents here when winning an initial three points in that first Prem campaign three long seasons ago - see season7 below. Over a couple of decades Brom had been in and out of the elite at intervals, so currently could be regarded as a big enough club to warrant every respect, whatever bookies & pundits said about their future prospects. With WBA regaining PL status last term, whilst BHA resided once again (as presently) in the bottom six, put these two Albions more or less in the same bracket for a kickoff.
*** match report: Points were one apiece at the death in a game of two halves. Seagulls flattered to deceive in the first forty-five minutes, only going ahead from an og (40min). Chances came... and went as quickly without hitting the net. After the interval Baggies took over initiative, especially when Potter withdrew Lallana on the hour mark. After that it was hosts hanging on against pressure from visitors to equalise. In the event they scored with the clock running down (83min). Potter reshuffled to 442 and moved players around but all to no avail. Locals had lost the plot and were in danger of defeat to boot. Stay at home Brighton fans could not be happy at not scoring or the second period surrender. It appeared a bottom six clash after all was said and done. Another season of trying to steer clear of those three drop-zone places loomed large and mid table ambitions were still like hollow dreams... outside an equally empty stadium void. Next day press reports highlighted reality; a familiar tale of coming up short, with no credible excuses either on or off field.

Season8 FA Cup 4th rnd (H) Sat 26/1/19 - 0-0.
Albion got past fellow PL club Bournemouth away in the traditional New Year 3rd rnd tie. Then drew last year's PL dropouts Baggies at the Amex. The question arising on Seagulls fans lips was whether the 'reserves' would turn out again as previously successful this month in Dorset. Home advantage and recent good displays across the whole squad certainly gave Chris Hughton food for thought with preparing this cup-tie team sheet. One thing he bore in mind was the depth of the ex-Prem Baggies squad with elite experience and goalscoring ability. In the event he went with a second eleven and WBA made lotsa changes too.
*** match report: The tie remained goalless and therefore a replay was necessary. You could hardly call it Albion's best performance at knockout football despite their superiority as per stats below. The Brom keeper played a blinder and dealt with on targets & his defence with blocks. He also tipped a Stephens drive onto a post. Baggies hit woodwork too as the game opened out in the second half. Hughton threw Propper, U23 wonder kid Gyokeres & old hand Murray into the fray but no score got registered. Hughton said, 'I don't have too many complaints about the game. We had VAR and there were incidents to pick out. Locadia has gone down in the box - it looks like a penalty. But we didn't do enough to win the game - test the keeper enough.' Brighton fans might differ in their take on the tie, maybe thinking Seagulls were just let to get up to the area then WBA shut up shop, parked the bus and held all comers off. In fact too many 'reserves' didn't do the do on the day and it showed only too obviously. At least it confirmed who could cut it, with regard to upcoming fixtures where points were more important than showboating and very necessary to boot.

Seasons 8-9 (2nd-3rd) (H) - not Premier League.
Season7 1st Premier League (H) 9/9/17 - W 3-1 ~ Gross 2, Hemed.
The August transfer window had closed but the Premier League paused another week, to resume after the first international break. This Saturday was only the second home fixture to date and Brighton fans had waited nearly a month, since an opening day defeat to Man City at the Amex. Chris Hughton announced his full 25 man squad, although there was a distinct lack of a new striker on the books. Prior to the deadline, Tim Krul, Ezequiel Schelotto & Jose Izquierdo were added to those four gotten in before the big kick off. Mat Ryan, Pascal Gross, Markus Suttner & Davy Propper having similarly arrived from European football leagues during pre-season. Albion had lost two and drawn one from three matches so far but despite a vital clean last time out, were still looking for their first goal to be scored in the Prem.
*** match report: Seagulls won their first meeting of these two Albions since 1993 and Pascal Gross became the first player to score a Premier League goal. On a showery September Saturday afternoon, it appeared Albion were very much in the game but stalemated approaching halftime. Then Gross opened his account from the six yard box after a centre by March (45min). Following the interval, Gross doubled the score when letting fly after put thu by Hemed (48min). On the hour mark Bruno went off with back trouble and Rosenior deputised. The German forward then reversed roles up front when providing an assist for Hemed to score with a near-post header (63min). WBA soon got more into the game and pulled one back, despite Duffy desperately trying to clear off the line (77min). Murray next replaced Hemed for the remaining 10 or so minutes. Albion saw it out as visitors sought a second goal - to go down with plenty of late fight. Chris Hughton said, 'the strikers knew we were trying to bring one in. If anything it should inspire them to do as well as they can. Once back in they've got to do well enough to stay there.' Brighton fans were very happy, the team performed well and showed capable of taking three points at 'fortress' Amex in future contests.

Season11 FA Cup R3 (A) Sat 8/1/22 - 1-2 aet ~ Moder, Maupay.
We had again reached that annual early January date when Prem & C'ship clubs enter the third round of the FA Cup, joining competition survivors from lower leagues. Albion were drawn away to Baggies, which coincidentally became our second tie in three years here - see season8 below. Considering we'd hardly visited West Brom during two decades based at Falmer it almost seemed a knockout touch of deja vu. Albion were doing well in Prem, sitting 9th at the halfway stage. West Brom were 4th in the C'ship, with an unbeaten home league record this campaign. Graham Potter was anticipated to field a strong line-up, bearing in mind strength of opposition - who were themselves a Prem outfit last term - see season10 below. Seagulls squad had been trimmed in the January window thus far, with Locadia transferring to Germany on a free and two other forwards going out on loan in level2, Connolly (Middlesbro) & Richards (Birmingham). New signing Polish youngster Kacper Kozlowski went straight over to RUSG (part owned by Tony Bloom) for development. And Bissouma had gone off to the knockout Afcon tournament with the club's blessing. Dunk & Webster were injured but pretty much all others were fit and available for selection. Brighton fans were keen for a Cup run, so wanted a pukka starting eleven, plus first team bench. Getting past Baggies would be a fair test of just how far we'd come until now and whether future prospects were actually realistic. On the day anything could happen (remember Millwall at the Den in closing moments) but a win here would keep up momentum, where '22 might be a record breaker... famous last words, as they said in '83.
*** match report: Our Albion got into the R4 draw after coming from behind and knocking Baggies out in extra time. Potter said; 'I picked a team to win and I'm delighted we have. It was important to go through'. Injured Mwepu had to be replaced before the half hour mark, as Seagulls toiled to make headway against a pressing home side. And soon after turnaround it was the other Albion who led first, from a counter attack that left us exposed (47min). So Potter inserted 2 attacking subs prior to the hour mark and 20 mins later 2 more to keep pedal to the metal. WBA had a man sent off for 2 yellows, which handed advantage to visitors (69min). Moder smashed in the equaliser with Seagulls now flying over hosts 10 man rearguard (81min). Into extra time and Maupay belted in the winner while BHA pounded tiring opponents (98min). Brighton fans were more than happy, if a little relieved to be in the bag so to speak, knowing a 'good' home draw would give us a fair chance to progress beyond the next tie. Everybody seemed up for it at this stage, in the 150th year of the FA Cup and many moons since '83 anyway. In the event we got Spurs away and shades of 2005 at White Hart Lane - see Withdean Era. Read it and weep! Hopes & dreams can be realised.

Season10, 4th Premier League (A) Sat 27/2/21 - L 1-0
Covid restrictions - lockdown 3, no fans attending @ Tier 3/4/5. Match played behind closed doors.
Although our Sussex Albion hadn't been to the Hawthorns too much this century, it seemed typical of a Prem venue where historically we'd struggle for points. Over three sequential previous campaigns in the elite there were places where Seagulls hardly took off and were usually in a flap from the get go. Often these failings were at clubs where we'd anticipated obtaining points and had to make up the difference, so to speak, next time elsewhere as visitors - maybe too at a stronger team with better home form. Graham Potter was required to address such issues, find a pathway ahead, smooth out bumps in the road and revise direction of travel. To date our away form now was: 0-3, 4-2, 1-1, 2-1, 1-2, 3-0, 0-0, 2-2, 1-0, 0-1, 0-1, 1-1 - wld lwl ddl wwd. Therefore that recorded improvement should be encouragement to get more positive results from on the road. At this juncture both Albions were in desperate need of points and so the PL regular scheduled 3pm contest inevitably became classed as a d-z dog fight with winner take all.
*** match report: Albion lost in bizarre fashion, having missed two penalties and a goal chalked off by VAR. Baggies opened scoring early with an unmarked header from a corner (11 min). Ref pointed to the spot next but Gross merely hit the bar. Then Ref twice disallowed Dunk's goal scored direct from a free-kick after VAR checked. The second half was another story of Seagulls looking good going forwards but failing to find the net. Welbeck hit a post from our second spot kick, so lady luck didn't exactly smile on us today. Potter made changes to personnel, positions and shape but nothing tried today got BHA a single goal. It was another defeat and one against a side we'd expect to beat, given relative form this term. Brighton were making heavy weather of this campaign, being on verge of the d-z instead of further up the table. From the point of view for an acceptable points tally it just wasn't good enough.

Season8 FA Cup round4 replay (A) Wed 6/2/19 - W 1-3 aet ~ Andone, Murray 2.
The good old bbc turned up for this second attempt at FAC4 resolution, hoping to delight neutral evening tv audiences with that 'giant killing' mentality in this historic knockout competition. And they had all reason to expect an 'upset' because, let us be frank, Albion were pretty hopeless away from home. Chris Hughton was now in a supposed difficult situation regarding his teamsheet, in light of knowledge that another Championship club had been drawn to visit either the Amex or Hawthorns for a lucrative last eight showdown. Current problems were with scoring goals whilst keeping a clean sheet, so we guess he didn't want things to develop beyond a winning result within ninety minutes. And certainly not go on to that lottery of penalty kicks. So Chris decided to put out the Cup eleven and hope for the best.
*** match report: The basic facts are, despite much more time spent goalless, Seagulls finally found away to win this protracted tie. Deep into the second half Baggies scored a weird goal from a f-k that ended up at the far post and was somehow stabbed in (77min). Andone then levelled with a solo effort (82min). Locadia & Propper got on to bolster strength all round as the result hung in balance. Then a masterstroke with introduction of Murray in extra time tipped things toward visitors. WBA got reduced to 10 men thru injury and BHA took advantage going forward. Murray twice found space in the 442 set up to bag a brace, one each side of turnaround (104 & 117min). Hughton said, 'I knew we would push right to the end but we had ample opportunities before that. Once we got back in the game I was confident we would go on and win it. Glenn came on and wanted to make an impact. We are grateful for that.' Brighton fans went to bed fairly happy in the knowledge we were in the next round, at the Amex and versus another Championship team. It had been a close call to get by Baggies but Murray made it worthwile in the end. Anything else we'd put to back of our minds for the time being.

Seasons 8-9 (2nd-3rd) (A) - not Premier League.
Season7, 1st Premier League (A) 13/1/18 - L 2-0.
BHA had made around a 40 million pound loss for the pre-promotion season, which of course was funded by Tony Bloom & friends. But this term finances both in & out were on a different level and the number one priority was to stay in the divison at all costs. On top of that Brighton fans were expecting money to be spent on better players in the January transer window and to date... Both sides had gotten thru FA Cup 3rd rnd ties successfully the previous week to set up a PL clash between candidates for the drop during winter/spring. Chris Hughton reverted to his 1st 11 rather than variation of a Cup line-up and instructed players to chip in with goals to aid the strikers.
*** match report: Once again Albion failed to score on the road and having conceded very early to a set piece, were always chasing the game. From a corner WBA took the lead with a header (4min). Seagulls huffed & puffed but could not pull one back prior to halftime. March came out immediately after the interval to patrol left flank. Then BHA repeated the same mistake as before, soon into the second half - a header at a set piece (55min). This serial failure was becoming a very bad habit. Hughton put Baldock on and later Kayal but nothing really changed. He said, 'in a week when we have done more on set plays we've conceded again. It put them on the ascendancy and us on the back foot.' Brighton fans went home unhappy and wondering where the next goal would come from on visits to other PL grounds. Albion dropped to 16th place, merely 3pts from the bottom three.
