Season5 (A) 25/8/15 Capital One Cup r2 - L 2-1 ~ Forster-Caskey.
Brighton had fortunately won very late at Southend 0-1 in the first round, when extra time loomed in Essex. In the Championship too Seagulls had made a great start to the new campaign and were unbeaten in four fixtures to date, albeit by fine margins and a little more luck. Chris Hughton had most of his squad fully fit and therefore elected to field a second eleven in this evening tie. He could afford to rest some 1st 11 regulars for tough Saturday fare prior to the international break. On the night a very small crowd of around 3k stood for a minutes silence to remember victims of the Shoreham Airshow tragedy on A27 the previous Saturday afternoon. They included a member of BHA groundstaff and two football friends who were fans.
*** match report: Albion went out of the competition to a late goal, having missed a penalty to take the lead themselves with a little over 15min to go. In an open first half it was Seagulls who edged ahead not long before the break. Forster-Caskey was foulded in the area and he duly converted the spot kick (39min). During the second period visitors were found wanting and had to do a fair amount of defending. There was little threat in the final third but Hughton seemed reluctant to change personnel. The home outfit equalised in fine fashion and were giving travellers defence a tough workout (65min). Then against run of play, O'Grady was given a chance by Ref to score from the spot - but he blasted over the bar. Hughton immediately withdrew the striker who was having a mare. Fickle finger of fate took over and Brighton faded as a force, while Saddlers rode roughshod as the clock wound down. They netted again shortly defore the death to gain a thoroughly deserved victory (86min). Hughton threw on two attackers but it was way too late in the evening for taking this tie into extra time. Thank you and good night! It was all so disappointing and the BHA feelgood factor was left in the west midland gloom.
