Albion were getting into stride in the Championship, having disposed of lowly Cheltenham in 1st round at the Amex, during opening five games of the season to date. The resulting draw meant another visit after two years to L1 opposition in Wiltshire, although both manager and squad were markedly different. Merely three of the starting eleven from season2 defeat remained at Falmer. Sami Hyypia was new boss, while only Bruno, Greer, Dunk and playing-sub Calderon still had original teamshirt numbers. But Crofts, CMS and LuaLua were still around from squad for selection too. Seagulls had signed 7 contracted replenishments and 2 additions on season loans in past weeks. On paper there was a bit of quality about the side, although it obviously wasn't the practiced article just yet.
*** match report: After 10mins Ince got forward to score a blinder on the volley after debutant Colunga lobbed a pass over. But the flood gates didn't open because Town were playing a useful passing game with numerous threats in front of BHA goal throughout first half. Immediately on turn around Robins netted and the tie hung in balance until full time. New signings Gardner & McCourt got on with 20 mins left after LuaLua was crocked. Town subbed their three but both sides seemed headed for extra time. Teixeira took to the field to add some quality in the deciding half hour. But Town lost a man to injury and Albion duly scored again as they held advantage in numbers - Colunga tapped in from a Chicksen cross (95min). JFC next banged in a penalty after Colunga went down (100min). But there was still time for Town to snatch one as Seagulls shat in their nest with poor possession tactics (112m). Right on time a red card reduced Robins to 9 and JFC smashed home a second spot kick to seal a place in the draw for round3. Sami said, 'we knew they were good but I was surprised how good they were.' At long last Brighton fans were just happy to get a victory away from home in this competition.
Ankergren, Calderon, Hughes, Dunk, Chicksen, Crofts (Gardner), Ince, Forster-Caskey, LuaLua (McCourt), Colunga, O'Grady (Teixeira).
Season2 (A) 14/8/12 League Cup r1 - L3-0.
Albion had not added many numbers to their first-year Championship squad before the new season kicked-off with a Capital One Cup visit to Town, previous runaway L2 winners in '11/12. We had a new keeper and full-backs, plus midfielder Crofty returned but the second striker position was still vacant. Released Navarro signed for Swindon and fit-again Elphick transferred to Bournemouth. Otherwise Gus had most of the old squad available, although regulars, CMS, Buckley, LuaLua and Hoskins were injured. Crofts was on Wales squad duty so the bench appeared a little light, especially as Sparrow and Vincelot did not seem to be included in forthcoming plans.
*** match report: It all started off so well against Town and about 700 travelling fans were surprised to get to half-time goal-less, such was Albion's grip during the first forty-five minutes. Our passing game was in evidence, with attacks down each flank from experienced Bruno and Bridge. However B'ton failed to convert chances and the home goalie looked useful. In the second period Seagulls were shot down with a set play routine in our area (53 min). Then Navarro netted twice more (65, 75) to rub sea-salt in visitors wounds. Gus introduced Calderon (56m) and Agdestein (66m) to try and halt Swindon running riot but it was falling apart for BHA as they crashed out in an embarrassing exit. Some of those problems from '11/12 on the road resurfaced and Gus realised there was plenty of work still to do yet.
Kuszczak, Bruno, Greer, Dunk, Bridge, Harley (Calderon), Bridcutt, Dicker (Agdestein), Noone, Vicente, Barnes.
