Season11 EFL Cup R3 Wed 22/9/21 - W 2-0 ~ Connolly 2.
Albion bizarrely drew another Welsh opponent for this midweek third round cup tie, having disposed of Cardiff away in R2. The second coincidence being Swansea was Graham Potter's previous club prior to joining BHA. He had come a long way since then and was doing ok, thank you very much, in his present job as a Prem head coach. That meant Albion were over achieving in the elite at present as well. But GP was again anticipated to field a team of players from the first team bench, plus selected U23s to bolster this match-day squad, as happened in Wales last time. The return of Lamptey from very long-term injury was also widely expected. In the event all happened to order.
*** match report: Albion went thru fairly comfortably after a brace by Connolly in the first half. His first pop a deflected effort (33min) and second a fierce shot (38min). Both were assisted by Mac Allister in build up. Turns started on debut, moving up from U23s and fellow youngsters Roberts, Richards and Leonard all too performed well. Newcomer Sarmiento got on late for Mac Allister, while Locadia also made a rare appearance when later replacing Connolly. Lamptey did merely 45 minutes from kickoff and Gross went on instead for the second period. Mwepu would have started but got injured in warm up. Potter was happy with the outcome and getting one of his PL strikers on the score-sheet. It wasn't the most attractive display of ties on the night and fair to say Swansea shoulda scored... but missed at least three good chances presented. Brighton fans who turned up woulda been impressed with how things worked out, especially U23s making the grade from PL2, squad players stepping up and of course the safe return of Lamptey after 9 months out.

Season 7 1st Premier League (H) 24/2/18 - 4-1 ~ Murray 2, Knockaert, Locadia
This was one of those fixtures given the status of a dog fight by Brighton fans. Home form so far was: P13 W4 D6 L3 F15 A19 = 1.53pt/gm. The sequence from Aug showed: lww ddd dld wdl w. The good news was those 3 losses were versus, Man City, Liverpool & Chelsea. The bad news was that 3 of the draws were against, Southampton, Stoke & Palace, close rivals in the ongoing survival race. Merely 3pts covered teams from 13th down to 19th place, so there was little room for staying put if results were negative home or away. And goal difference would play a big part in the final outcome as well, given defeat could tip the balance toward the drop zone.
*** match report: Albion put a little space between mid table and the bottom three with a useful result against plucky visitors. Murray poked home a spot kick after being brought down to open scoring in favour of hosts (18min). Then it all went flat as Swans became offensive with attacking subs inserted. Seagulls held firm and doubled the lead from a fine move. Gross & Izquierdo worked the old one two and Murray finished it (69min). Knockaert put the game to bed a few minutes later when running on to a Gross thru ball (73min). Hughton made 3 late changes including a PL debut for Locadia. Swans pulled one back via a Dunk og (85min). But Locadia got his first PL goal when prodding in a Stephens cross-come-shot (90min). Hughton said, 'we had to go through a difficult period in the game but as it opened up we really capitalised and could have had even more.' Brighton fans were very pleased with this result, which eased threats of the drop and helped goal difference to boot. All Albion had to do next was to get nine more points from a possible 30 - to ensure survival at a little above 1.00pt/gm overall.

17/18 - 08 09 21 . 28 56 -28 . 33 18 = 0.86 . 21.0 55.2 - Carlos Carvalhal & Paul Clement.
Welsh caretaker Alan Curtis, Italian Franco Guidolin and American Bob Bradley each tinkered with Swans for a while since start of 2016. Englishman Clement was renowned for coaching skills abroad but didn't do ok in the Principality for enough hope to rise in the valleys once more.

It was a topsy-turvey season and one Swans will not want to repeat - on or off the field. They survived courtesy of a coach who knew what to do.

Another testing season saw a different brace of men in charge but the outcome was quite similar to previous campaigns among the English elite. Italian Franco Guidolin emerged as the coach to take the club forward but such was conjecture.

Season 7 1st Premier League (A) 4/11/17 - W 0-1 ~ Murray
Going into this fixture up in south Wales, Albion were doing ok after the first quarter of the inaugural Prem season had been completed. They held a mid table berth and were averaging more than a basic one point per game index. Chris Hughton had nearly a full 25 man squad available for selection but as usual went with the regular match-day 18 and consequently an expected unchanged starting 11.
*** match report: Albion won the contest by a single goal scored, to cement their league place going into the third international break. Murray was unmarked at the far post to touch home a deep cross by Knockaert (29 min). The standard throughout was not exactly elite level, although Seagulls defended efficiently and thus kept a vital clean sheet. Hughton inserted March with around half an hour to go and much later Hemed & Brown in like for like fashion. The team ethic ensured visitors area was hallowed ground, thereby relying on counter attacks when regaining the ball. BHA sat on the one nil score for over an hour and probably didn't look as effective probing forward as during the first half. Hughton said, 'we've been very good for the last two seasons. I've seen players improve and play at a really good standard. They are seizing it so far with both hands.' Brighton fans went home happy, having witnessed a reasonable display, despite grinding it out at the Liberty Stadium. Taking the positives, it was onward and almost unbelievably upward!
