Season5 11/8/15 (A) League Cup R1 - w 0-1 ~ LuaLua.
Having started the league campaign with a win at the Amex, Chris Hughton was able to rotate his squad for this annual midweek early-season knockout competition. Seagulls were up against a team that had gained promotion via play-offs from League Two last term and were renowned for keeping clean sheets. New Albion signings were again in evidence, as keeper Niki Maenpaa and fullback Liam Rosenior made starting debuts, while recent fellow defender Gaetan Bong retained his place among eight changes from the Saturday line-up. Speculation abounded concerning possible transfer of Lewis Dunk during the ongoing open window, with news on the grapevine of an imminent deal in Germany for central-defender Uwe Hunemeier from Paderborn, for over a million pounds. Meanwhile promising academy product Glen Rea made his initial appearance in rearguard. Previous first eleven regulars, Calderon, Holla, Ince, Forster-Caskey and OGrady, from the group struggling against threat of relegation last season, got a run out tonight. Greer & LuaLua turned out again, while current selections, Bruno, Kayal, March, Baldock and other newcomer Tomer Hemed filled the bench, with fringe players Ankergren & Chicksen completing numbers.
*** match report: On a cool night in Essex, with a small crowd below 5k bothering to attend, nearly 700 Brighton fans got along to old Roots Hall. There was to be late drama, which avoided the distinct possibility of extra time, in a competitive tie that revealed fairly even stats across the pitch for, on/off targets, off-sides, corners, fouls and possession. Several Championship sides suffered defeat by lower league opposition on this evening in a flurry of goals. However, Seagulls & Shrimpers were making a meal of scoring throughout ninety minutes on sea. Albion went with a 4411 shape, where Forster-Caskey filled the space between central midfield and lone front runner OGrady. Calderon was thwarted in an early opportunity to lead and opening goalmouth skirmishes were few and far between. Ref was not giving much away to either outfit, although booked Bong before the half hour was up. In the second period visitors pushed ahead, using both flanks as threats down the middle were mostly soaked up by resolute home defending. Odd chances came and went at both ends before Hughton made a double substitution in an attempt to up the attacking ante. With a little less than twenty minutes to go, Baldock arrived for OGrady and Hemed got on in lieu of Forster-Caskey. Albion back line held firm at counterattacks and Maenpaa proved his shot-stopping capabilities late in the day. But it was LuaLua who got his name in the papers following a move begun by Hemed and assisted thru Holla. A competent low drive settled the result deep into stoppage time and sent BHA into the draw for round2. Hughton said, +you bring players on to make an impact. Sometimes it works and it is always nice when it does+
Maenpaa, Rosenior, Greer, Rea, Bong, Calderon, Holla, Ince, LuaLua, Forster-Caskey (Hemed), OGrady (Baldock).
