The Prem resumed on Boxing Day following a long break for those World Cup '22 finals in Qatar. Well, for the national record, had we lost here at St Mary's yet against Saints in previous Prem campaigns? Computer says; 'no' (see away scroll below). In fact we'd done better than ok versus 'em over five years since initially arriving at parity during Jan '18. Then followed two more draws of Sept '18 and Jul '20, before a win in Mar '21 and a point apiece from Dec '21 - all visits with points registered (seasons 7-11). Would it be they now could be hit for six, or heaven forbid, it be us initially given out at last. Albion head coach now was Roberto de Zerbi. He'd been in situ since Graham Potter left during September and got thru two international breaks to prepare Seagulls squad for Prem action. Albion had eight players in various national squads at the WC finals. Mac Allister played for Argentina in the final. Sanchez, Trossard, Mitoma, Lampiey, Caicedo, Estupinan and Sarmiento were other participants at various stages. The rest of the 1st 11 squad and 10 U21s went to Dubai for their warm-weather camp during the latter World Cup group stages in December. Soton merely spent 37m by start of the season. Just prior to the last Prem fixture before the World Cup pause from mid November Saints sacked their manager - being the 5th elite outfit to do so this term thus far. They very soon appointed ex-Albion player & coach Nathan Jones at St Marys as new head coach. He took Saints to Andalucia for their winter training camp during the WC final stages. Brighton fans of vintage will recall Jones had played in Spain back in the day. In the week prior to this fixture both clubs had EFL Cup R4 ties to kickoff their competitive football resumptions. Soton got thru at home versus L1 outfit Lincoln. Albion got k-o'd away at level3 club Charlton. You couldn't make it up really. A Prem side that couldn't score against a League One defence... and all that time to practice hitting the net during December in Dubai. Or maybe by the pool?
*** match report: getting back to playing Prem fixtures proved a positive for Albion and the recent Cup setback was forgotten as winning goals duly hit the net. Lallana nodded in a cross by March to open scoring (14mins). Then a centre from Estupinan was turned into the net by a defender (35mins). Seagulls put the match to bed soon after halftime when March unleashed a drive at distance that found the top corner (56mins). Saints scored via a rebound from a pen parried by Sanchez that bounced back into play (73mins). But hosts were never gonna get any closer and visitors saw out rest of the ninety plus minutes without too much trouble. De Zerbi introduced young subs for some game time fairly late in proceedings. He thought this was Brighton's best performance to date - saying, 'the result isn't the most important thing. It is how my players follow me and they have to be happy.' Brighton fans were happy again anyway, following that midweek Cup debacle and thought St Marys a great place to worship gods of football. Boxing Day wasn't always one of previous celebration but this year seemed extra special because of that long pause without live Prem action since November. Now the games come thick & fast, including the FA Cup round for elite clubs in first week of the New Year. Suddenly fans were full of optimism once more for the future. Was a place in Europe a dream too far?

Season11, 5th Premier League (A) Sat 4/12/21 - 1-1 ~ Maupay.
We'd visited south coast rivals for the last four terms at this elite level and on balance did a tad more than just ok. The challenge now was to replicate last term's win, or at least hold our own in Hampshire once more. With winter approaching halcyon days of August were long gone and the resulting match-day squad was now trying to maintain momentum from that good summer start to this fifth campaign. In fact, although we'd not won in the preceeding nine fixtures, compared to last season we were still flying higher than ever before. Saints boss Ralph Hassenhuttl saw a host of players depart in the close season but took on about 40m of replacements. Pundits opinion was that the St Mary's club needed all the prayers their fans could muster & mutter in order to stay out of the bottom six. Time would tell for both clubs.
*** match report: Albion got a point with a very, very late equaliser when down to ten men for our second game running in a week. Seagulls line up was much changed to the regular one, with Dunk now added to an increasing injury list. The first half was nothing to write home about, possibly due to more direct tactics employed in lieu of playing out from the back. Sanchez tho had to make three early crucial saves to keep rampant hosts at bay. But Saints still went ahead from a counter attack (29min), so it was all going to be uphill afterwards for the team in all aqua away kit. During the second period Potter put on three attacking subs and altered formation from 4321 to 442 then later 352. Vistors stayed in the match and went looking for a leveller as the clock ticked down and the pendulum swung back towards our successful goal search. However right at end of normal time Trossard got carried off with an arm injury and travellers ten men were left to soldier on and find the net. Then deep into injury time as Albion pressed, Maupay got on the end of Moder's chip from a f-k to restore parity right at the death (98min). Potter was happy with the eventual outcome. Pundits & press used words like personality & character. While Brighton fans thought it felt like a win and celebrated well past five o'clock in an act of delayed hero worship. You might say our match-day squad were close to sainthood afterwards but that particular phrase wouldn't really be appropriate St Marys.

Season10, 4th Premier League (A) Sun 14/3/21 - W 1-2 ~ Dunk, Trossard.
Covid restrictions: no fans - (lockdown 3, T3/4/5 = 0 fans, home fans attending @ Tier 2).
Brighton fans were relieved, after the Prem restarted last season, to finish in late July well clear of the drop zone - see season9 below. Saints fans had an even better post-lockdown period when their earlier struggling outfit showed pukka Prem form to end just shy of the top ten. Graham Potter wanted to kick on as well this term, leave bottom six shenanigans of those previous three elite campaigns firmly in the past and progress towards midtable mediocrity at least. Prem visits here had all ended with a point apiece, so Albion were looking to improve on those shared results this time. However, both clubs faced a reversal of fortune this term to date, consequently it became something of a contest to stop proverbial rot spreading and again avoid getting beaten at all costs. Seagulls were on a losing run of three and could ill afford to make it four. However by nature of table positioning, teams at the bottom tended to suffer many more defeats than wins. Therefore Graham Potter's mission was to motivate the match-day squad to greater heights, be extra well drilled, tactically astute & aware, final-third savvy and rock solid in defence. Only time would tell quite which Brighton side would actually turn up today. And more to the point, whether we would score more goals than opposition do - which is basically the whole idea of football.
*** match report: Albion got past Saints to relieve pressure on our ongoing relegation threatened situation for time being. Dunk opened scoring with a bullet header from Gross outswinging corner (16min). Hosts hit back before half an hour gone after visitors failed to clear lines (27min). Zeqiri appeared for the second half, replacing injured Burn and became a wingback. Potter switched men around in front of three at the back, now playing 343. Then Trossard hit the winner when put thru by Welbeck (56min). Seagulls dug in for inevitable onslaught as the clock ticked toward stoppage time. BHA held out, without too much late VAR drama, recording a 5th win on the road to boot. It was a half decent performance, although we'd played better on other occasions and lost. But that's football and generally things even out over each campaign. At least that lack of goals hoodoo had been put to bed for a week anyhow. It's never over (until we do the maths) but so far sums were still registering a positive return and forecasts appeared not so bleak with the all important run-in approaching fast.

Season9, 3rd Premier League (A) Thursday 16/7/20 - 1-1 ~ Maupay.
PL suspended until restart from 17/6/20 after Sat 2/5/20 postponed. Revised evening fixture played behind closed doors without fans attending.
Three games as originally listed to go until end of season and it was very many months since we'd last met south-coast rivals in the division, not least due to that deadly covid pandemic that halted Prem fixtures between March and May until June. This was the penultimate away match in a calendar that had allocated visiting all regular big-six sides thru first half of the campaign pre New Year but reciprocally allotted 4 of them to be over at our stad during that delayed run-in. Thus at this juncture Albion had lost 3 of those home matches and conceded 11 goals to boot. Graham Potter wasn't now setting Seagulls up to groundbreaking 343 shape as much earlier in the campaign but still employed a front foot method of play and a mantra that confidence & belief shall win through. Ok, here's the rub: 36 points on the board and barely averaging over a point per game, still struggling on our way to a very basic relegation free target of 40pts. The Prem restart in mid June had been all about clubs hitting the ground running and BHA initially profited from pukka fitness & organisation. Now the process was more even footed and without crowds attending or home advantage, games were often determined by who wanted it more on the day.
* * * match report: Albion hung on for a point after receiving a second half bashing. Maupay opened the scoring (17min) while visitors were in charge. But Saints subs came on for start of the second period and bossed the game thereafter. Hosts equalised (66min) and went looking for the winner. Potter altered shape and changed personnel in a bid to have & hold. At end of the day Seagulls had a bit of luck and although woodwork was struck more than once, we got thru unscathed. Hosts had levelled in a game of two halves, while travellers went off the boil. Albion seemed very average overall and pretty much a regular bottom six outfit. Potter was asking the squad to punch above their weight and it showed. There are many reasons for this and not merely a poor to middling Prem performance on the night. BHA had been in 15th place for majority of this season and the table doesn't lie. Rookie Potter has also come through a baptism of fire at elite level. He thinks a good game and sets up to compete. But we'd only won eight matches this term and that stat tells you why we are where we are.

Season8 2nd Premier League (A) Monday 17/9/18 - 2-2 ~ Duffy, Murray.
This third trip on the road, following the 1st international break, got moved back to Monday evening from the weekend due to pay tv coverage. During the campaign opening of three weeks to beginning of September results were; Watford 2-0 (A), Man Utd 3-2 (H), Liverpool 1-0 (A) & Fulham 2-2 (H). Albion had also hosted Saints in the EFL Cup 2nd rnd at end of August, when losing 0-1 - to exit the evening tournament early doors. BHA fielded a scratch side that night but few of those would figure in the starting eleven today. In the event Chris Hughton more or less put out the regular eleven.
* * * match report: Fast forward to the interval and Hughton was lambasting his selections for not being up to par during a woeful first half performance. Seagulls conceded initially to a long range punt (35min) but were on the backfoot throughout those opening forty-five mins. And it got worse as visitors gave away a penalty kick, to go two down after the hour mark (65min). Then suddenly Albion woke up and Duffy headed home from a Knockaert set piece (67min). Travellers made two tactical subs and switched to 442 as they chased but upped the game. With time running out green away shirts pushed forward and took play to hosts in an attempt at parity in stats. At the death, Duffy was clattered and Murray converted the spot kick (90+1). Hughton said, 'the team underperformed. You can't do it and get away with it. Credit to them, we put ourselves in good positions to create chance.' There was a final sense of relief from supporters, following much frustration for eighty minutes. In truth Albion had played better on the road at Liverpool and lost. So it was clear away form had to be consistently better this term and that meant trying to keep clean sheets.

Season 7 1st Premier League (A) Wednesday 31/1/18 - 1-1 ~ Murray.
This fixture came at closing of the January transfer window and was an evening game to boot, so club staff were expected to have an extra late night. Albion had already signed Jurgen Locadia for 14m from PSV Eindhoven but he was previously injured and still receiving treatment, so ineligible to make debut. Then Leo Ulloa returned to Seagulls from rivals Leicester on loan and went straight on to the bench. Both clubs had only just gotten thru to the FA Cup 5th round ties and so were still on a high for this clash of south-coast PL lightweights.
* * * match report: Albion went home with a point after taking the lead but in truth being up against it for most of this dour contest. March was decked in the area and Murray converted the spot kick (14m). In the second period Saints equalised at a set piece with a back heel in a packed area (64min). Ulloa came on with 15 mins to go and later Kayal as time ran out. Seagulls held on for a vital point in the relegation dog fight. Hughton said, 'with the players they have got, you'd expect them to have good possession and threaten. We restricted them to a half chance or so. We were resilient and a draw was a fair result.' Brighton fans were ok with the point too, although scoring goals in open play was still a problem ongoing. Whether this glitch could be overcome would be the deciding factor for survival or not.

Season1 Championship (A) 19/11/11 - L 3-0.
Our south-coast rivals were top of the div and on a record winning run at St Mary's that had begun with promo form in League1 the previous season. Brighton went there after yet another lull in proceedings for an international break, so you couldn't say we were unprepared for another derby clash. Gus Poyet began his BHA career at So'ton two years previously and we also pinched a point there last term, on our way to level two as eventual title holders. But Albion's campaign had faltered following an early lead in the Championship and away results dipped alarmingly. Poyet's out of form squad was small, wracked by injury and laterly bolstered by on-loan signings until New Year. On the day, weather was perfect, over 3200 travelled from Sussex and elsewhere and there was a near sell out next to the river Test.
*** match report: The first half was all cat and mouse and So'ton didn't get the upper hand because Brighton had plenty of possession in midfield. Early in the second period it all changed in an instant. Saints soon led with a header from a cross to the far post as Albion defence failed to deal (49 min). Not long afterwards Ref pointed to the spot and sent off Taricco for arguing that Dunk fouled his man outside our area. At two down with only ten men and over half an hour left we looked beat (59m). Ten mins later Ref gave a second pen when sub Calderon 'tripped' a red shirt (69m). Poyet had double swapped for an attacking option just beforehand to try and salvage something. So it was all in vain and there was then an exercise in damage limitation until the end. Brighton fans were realistic about life on the road at this standard but although getting stick from massed home support, could see our outfit hadn't progressed over three months and that was a tad worrying. It was now up to Gus to prove he was steering the club in the right direction after proclaiming ambitions to be reg top-six within two years.

The reverse game was 22 Feb '25 in mid season (Q2-3) - see away scroll further above. Now we had xpts and they had xpts in the period up to halfway thru. One and a half years ago we'd met here during late May '23 when securing victory. Our Prem record at the Amex versus Saints was; dll ldw - in the first six seasons of seven to date. Season13, (7th) (H) - not Premier League
Season12, 6th Premier League (H) Sun 21/5/23 - W 3-1 ~ Ferguson 2, Gross
Due to late fixture changes because of earlier postponements this now became the penultimate game at the Amex. It originally was the last home match of the season and got moved to the Sunday with a 2pm kickoff. But looking back versus Saints - oh dear! Seagulls were previously winless at the Amex against 'em after five fixtures. We first drew in Oct '17 when initially joining the Prem (see scroll below). Then followed three consecutive losses to boot here during that extended period - Mar '19, Aug '19 and Dec '20. And another draw in Apr '22 late last term completed this sorry saga (seasons 7-11). The current situation was a tad different, as Saints had now already been relegated, after 11 years in the elite, while Seagulls were flying high with lotsa points and also some super-dooper displays to boot. It looked a mis-match on paper but strange things happen in fooball for any given day. Albion's in & out form, with either wins or losses, made Brighton fans wonder which team would turn up today. Another flacid performance would be a disaster at end of the best camapign we've ever witnessed. Time to get that first victory over Saints at the Amex in six straight seasons to date.
*** match report: Albion did get their first home win over Saints and those three points ensured we play in Europe next term as well. It all appeared straight forward when Ferguson shot us into a two goal lead by the break. His first with a contrrolled low drive and second a clip past the keeper on the run (29 & 40 mins). But Saints hit back in the second period with a header at a corner routine (58mins). And netted again on the counter minutes later - chalked off by VAR for offside. That wake up call got Seagulls off the ground once more and Gross scored from a daisy cutter inside the post (69mins). He thus equalled BHA's PL goals record of 26 with Murray & Maupay. The players took a lap of honour following the final whistle and a good time was had by all. De Zerbi praised his squad, being open & honest as in character - up for manager of the year to boot. Brighton fans were across socials and other media, basking in joys of such a historic achievement. You couldn't make it up really. Forty years ago today BHA played at Wembley in our only final there to date. Somehow this modern take on what the club requires to hit heights in the Prem is far greater than a previous Cup run. Success has been built on groundwork by Dick Knight & Martin Perry's vision for the Amex. Then taken forward by Tony Bloom, Paul Barber and all admin & technical exec's & staff from the last decade. You mght say it has been a full team effort. In early years at the community stadium there was a large banner on the shop glass front; one club, one ambition. Dreams seem to have come true. Congratulations to the Albion for going from gutter to the stars.

Season11, 5th Premier League (H) Sun 24/4/22 - D 2-2 ~ Welbeck, og.
Brighton fans rocked up at Sunday lunchtime for this seventeenth Amex fixture of an in & out campaign. Home form had been pretty poor again this term and continued as a fifth year of struggle at Falmer - in front of loyal Seagulls support at community stad sell outs. Our record here from '17 thru '21 was: W 7 6 5 4 - D 8 5 7 9 - L 4 8 7 6 . W22 D29 L25 . W = 28.9% D = 38.1% L = 32.8%. Domestic results versus distant coastal neighbours had also been dire during four years of mutual Prem experience to date. With the run-in now well under way, there was no better time for Albion to register an initial blue v red stripes win here. Southampton had almost a polarised H & A record compared to Brighton, being so much better at St Marys than travelling. But they posed a potential banana skin, especially if playing in yellow.
*** match report: Oh dear! The '22 winless home hoodoo continued following a score draw that once again frustrated Brighton fans. Welbeck netted so soon after kickoff and Seagulls seemed well on their way to glory (2min). It was the 25th anniversary of BHA surviving as a League club and that all went down to the wire coz of good home form. Now Albion couldn't even buy a win and even on a nice sunny April Sunday afternoon somehow contrived to blow it once more. An OG fortuitously put hosts further ahead approaching the interval (44min). But travellers hit back with a f-k that got past the wall, then Sanchez and in off a post (45+4min). Visitors were all over locals like a red rash from turnaround and soon levelled with a pot shot from outside the area (54min). From then on things hung in balance, although Brighton did defend well enough when increasingly put under the cosh. So Potter put on Gross who later netted but was denied a goal by VAR for o/s. We wonder why he can't get goals like in 17/18 when playing close to Glenn Murray in a wonderful first Prem season partnership. Potter started 442 then mixed it up late in the day with 3412 and other variations on a theme. We'd had to settle on a point apiece, which took us to 41pts and equalled the last two terms tallies. The big difference was much better away results that now kept us out of the bottom six. At the Amex Albion still got poor returns and our expansive play didn't produce goals from around the pitch. Too many players had obvious ability to score but historically didn't. And that covered def, m-f, wide men & forwards - go to Archive and check the stats. If BHA had ambition to be a top ten side then someone had to step up, or conversely Tony Bloom splash the cash and buy us that much needed winner.

Season10, 4th Premier League (H) Mon 7/12/20 - L 1-2 ~ Gross.
Attendance was selected by ballot for 2000 home fans limit, as per regional Tier 2 covid19 restrictions. This was the first match where fans were allowed to enter the Amex since that successful limited crowd test event prior to start of the season in mid September. So'ton's fixture was anticipated to be played behind closed doors during ongoing coronavirus pandemic precautions but the gov revised regional tier system now allowed small numbers for live attendance.
Saints were currently Albion's only southcoast Prem rivals and in certain aspects nearer than other southern outfits to compare relative status going into this third BHA decade. Puting aside ups & downs of footy histories, there was potential for both clubs to build on foundation seasons and become PL midtable regulars at very least. Length of stay among the elite would be determined by performances of squads year on year and whether they'd been enhanced by quality additions, perhaps become stagnated from mediocrity, or even had sold best players to balance books. Due to 2020 viral cause & effect, Albion had spent next to nothing prior to beginning of our fourth Prem campaign. However the board addressed budget shortfalls by releasing or selling 'unwanted' players to boot, while enhancing our out-on-loan operations and academy personnel. Meanwhile Saints also attempted to counter lack of usual revenues during that imposed very short close season and afterwards when this campaign began. These ongoing coronavirus restrictions were also cause for concern with owners, ceos, accountants, footy fiscal experts and fans - to name but a brief cross section of current interested parties. Income, turnover, funding and outgoings took on a revised and infinitely investigated perspective at this juncture. Graham Potter supposedly had the group he wanted to progress, being a mix of talented youth and older Prem experience. Or maybe was a squad perhaps a tad under required optimum levels due to those pandemic driven financial constraints. One way or another BHA had to stay in the Prem as a fundamental parameter and develop over time as a work in progress, whether the club had additional resources readily available or not.
*** match report: Albion crashed to defeat with a certain amount of controversy involving VAR late in the day. Much earlier the video Ref spotted handball and BHA got a pen - dispatched by Gross (26min). But just prior to halftime Saints nodded a leveller from a set piece (45min). Visitors took more control in the second period and Seagulls were in a right flap. Potter put on Maupay to up the ante but it merely backfired for strikers once again. Then VAR overtuned Ref's f-k to award a pen to travellers - after March was harshly treated for a foul on very edge of the area. Saints won it from the spot and the game was well & truly up for Albion (81min). 2k Brighton fans in the Amex booed as 25k would, although their face-masks prevented the full monty of verbal abuse volume aimed at officials. It was all over bar huffing & puffing and BHA remained without a win here this campaign so far. Potter was pragmatic, players were choked and Brighton fans frustrated with basically a below level performance tonight of all nights. That's football Prem style and love or loath it, VAR was dishing out decisions now and altering results from good to bad or vice versa. The whole sorry debate continues... face-masks or not.

Season9, 3rd Premier League (H) Sat 24/8/19 - L 0-2.
A second consecutive home fixture at start of this third PL campaign but no Brighton fan wanted to relive last term's traumatic meeting here, that began a nightmare run-in (see Season8 below). It eventually cost Chris Hughton from appearing in the technical area after mid May, his replacement, head-coach Graham Potter, taking over there today. BHA owner Tony Bloom publically expressed a pre-season desire for the club to be a top ten outfit in future. By that mantra Brighton fans anticipated it being less than the twenty years it'd taken to get us thus far - albeit starting from ground zero at very end of last century. Overall, Withdean had served up a positive impetus & purpose, while Falmer enjoyed forward-looking success upwards to date. The thing now was, could results progressively match the ambition?
match report: Albion crashed to defeat with ten men, plus more VAR controversy. Seagulls made an attractive start until Andone raised a foot and Ref a red card (30min). Potter reshaped to 432 with just the two small new lads up front. Then Dunk headed home but VAR chalked it off (again at home) for Burn o/s impeding the keeper (38min). Saints took the lead at a counter with hosts all over the shop when pushing up (55min). Potter put on Locadia, Gross and Murry in the space of 10 mins to shake things up but to no avail, Albion failed to score. Visitors tapped in a second goal during stoppage with locals looking out on their feet in the hot sunshine. Potter said, 'sometimes you need margins to go your way. It was an even, hard game, even after the red card.' Brighton fans felt it was a match where we shoulda got points (again) but you don't if chasing the game with ten men and registering another FTS stat to boot like last term. It all appeared too pretty at times and not enough simple first time passes to find strikers and test the keeper. New faces on show today but same old problem prevailing.

Season8 2nd Premier League (H) Sat 30/3/19 - L 0-1.
There was an internationall break prior to this end of March fixture, so perhaps that was a last chance to draw breath before the all important run-in began building pressure in the danger zone during extra busy April. The Prem bottom eight ongoing into this match was: 13 Newcastle 35pt, 14 Palace 33pt, 15 Brighton 33pt, 16 Southampton 30pt, 17 Burnley 30pt, 18 Cardiff 28pt, 19 Fulham 17pt & 20 Huddersfield 14pt. Therefore it was obvious how important the remaining BHA home contests became in terms of points & position. Meanwhile FA Cup QF distractions had caused the multitude of Seagulls fans to invest in plans for the forthcoming semi-final tie, to be played at Wembley the following weekend. But surely Prem survival came first & foremost and a huge crowd was expected at the Amex to act as twelfth man in this six pointer. On the day it was like summer and 30,600 turned up, including a big away following.
*** match report: What a shambles it turned out to be for Seagulls, who didn't turn up until the last half hour. In trying not to lose, with a slo-mo & static play out from the back performance, they paid the ultimate price for making a bad mistake sufficient to soil the clean sheet. The crowd got more & more frustrated with this inept display and moaning & groaning drifted across three sides of the Amex. In the south stand Saints fans were happy as Larry while they hung in there and next snatched the lead from a fast counter attack (53min). Hughton threw in March and later Locadia as BHA went from 433 to 442 and then 343 when Duffy joined the strikers. But the game was up long before the frantic finish and we could have been there hours later waiting for an unlikely equaliser. Hughton said, 'our focus was on this game all week. We have not spoken about the FA Cup. Now we have another very big game on Wednesday - even bigger after this result.' Well he got that right but it was about the only thing that afternoon. If this was the first team then God help us next term, whatever div we were to end up in. And it was no good laughing it off as a blip because Fortress Amex had been crumbling for months and our away form was diabolical to boot. You only had to look at stats for clinical analysis, trying to understand the BHA style from observation was gonna send any fan round the corner double quick. Were we just too nice & gave them all too much respect, or was the squad up to 38 Prem fixtures, let alone 46 in the Championship!

Season8 EFL Cup 2nd rnd (H) Tue 28/8/18 - L 0-1.
This midweek knockout competition was now divided from round one into separate north & south groups of teams across the four pro divisions. Bizarrely Albion drawing Saints were the only Prem v Prem clubs to clash at the 2nd rnd stage - where elite sides initially join winning EFL outfits from 1st rnd ties. Four contests had been selected for VAR coverage, including at home here and three other meetings with a PL paricipant. Chris Hughton rotated his PL squad as expected and also introduced 3 U23 players to start and added one on the bench.
match report: Albion crashed out of the competition when conceding a goal with two minutes left of normal time. In stoppage they put on a kid to bolster attack but it was too little & too late. Seagulls were toothless up front, although did manage several attempts on goal without really testing the keeper. Bissouma was booked after half an hour and just past the hour mark Propper replaced Gross. Saints played a late card of two first team subs and it tipped the balance in favour of visitors when Button got beat by a header from their combo (88min). The kids all did good generally but it was up front where BHA big boys failed to impress on the night. Hughton said, 'the big disappointment is the game was heading for a draw and that really would have been a fair result. I thought we were right in it for majority of the game. It could have gone either way.' Brighton fans were disappointed too, especially with lack of creating, attempting and mostly taking definite scoring chances. Thus the second team fell short, meaning some would not get the apps needed to maintain match fitness and be sharp when coming off the PL bench.

Season 7 1st Premier League (H) Sunday 29/10/17 - 1-1 ~ Murray.
This was the last of three Sunday fixtures during October, albeit the fourth game this month was on a Friday evening to boot! Brighton fans had gotten used to having several matches rescheduled, since the tv media had discovered how good the Amex facilities were during those Championship promotion challenges over previous seasons at Falmer. Albion now reached the first quarter stage in the Prem today, where a basic 1pt/gm average was deemed necessary to target survival by next May. And going into this lunchtime game the index was currently 1.22pt/gm.
match report: Albion came from behind to level a largely forgettable meeting of south-coast rivals. Saints went ahead early when slotting home a f-k that rebounded off woodwork (7 min). And they generally had better of the first half exchanges. After the break Murray scored from a cross by Gross following good work down field (52min). The experienced striker was booked 10 mins later for being over competitive. Duffy also entered Refs book prior to a late change, as the clock wound down, when Brown came on. March also got a few minutes and Bong was booked in stoppage time. Both defences stood firm, although keepers were hardly troubled. It was all stalemate, parity and deadlock. Hughton said, 'credit to the lads for the way they responded. We thoroughly deserved to get back in the game. We showed great character and probably finished the stronger team.' Brighton fans thought it a fair result and overall were pleased to still be getting over a point a game at this initial stage for stats. Q1 = 1.20pt/gm.

Season1 Championship (H) 2/1/12 - W 3-0 ~ Forster-Caskey, Sparrow 2.
BHA had now got to New Year, in our first season back in the Championship since 2006. Home form at the Amex from August 2011 wasn't too bad, although we'd initially lost to Palace, then West Ham and latterly Burnley - when quickly reduced to nine men. So'ton were runners-up to us previously in League1 and this term were also after automatic promotion at top of the table. Falmer was very different to Withdean for regular fans match-day experience coz there were three times as many for a kick-off. The various concourse facilities were good, seats comfortable and acoustics excellent. You could even catch up on other scores at h-t, from multiple TV screens while having ya locally sourced pie and drink. There was a bit of delay getting out if using the expensive car-park or queues for trains but massed park & ride busses got priority at the exit. Seagulls shop was well filled by both merchandise and punters, so all round we felt like we had a pukka footy stadium now. On this sunny but chilly day, over 20k packed in to witness some fun beginning for 2012. Gus Poyet was forced into changes due to ongoing injuries and suspensions. He had to recall Steve Cook from on loan and started U18 prospect Jake Forster-Caskey in midfield. Youngster Grant Hall made up numbers on the bench.
*** match report: Brighton fans were happy to get to h-t goalless, where Saints missed a sitter and also had Cook clear off our line. Just into the second period Ref red-carded Saint's striker for sinning against El-Abd. Then Taricco got crocked and Hall duly came on. Albion quickly became more offensive, while visitors vigorously defended their third. Soon past the hour, Forster-Caskey popped home a spilled shot from LuaLua and the Amex exploded with noise (66min). Ten minutes later Sparrow let fly from outside the area and it cannoned in off an upright (76m). A further ten minutes and he scored again from closer inside the packed box with help of a deflection (86m). Greer then got sent off for flooring his man off the ball up our end. But it didn't really end in tears, vast majority of locals went home happy knowing our small and depleted squad had useful back-up in the pipeline. So word all around was, the near future appeared much brighter than that very recent past. Footnote: Cook signed for Bournemouth in the January transfer window.
