memorable match: Season5 (H) - a C'ship side evolving under Chris Hughton.
Season6 (H) Championship 15/10/16 - 2-2 ~ Baldock, Murray.
This match was 12 months on from last seasons meeting at the Amex and marked end of the first quarter (Q1). To date it appeared another promotion push was forecast, although Albion had gotten less points so far, been beaten twice from 11 fixtures, with a goal difference of +7. One of those defeats was unexpectedly at home, where Seagulls again needed the community stadium to be a fortress during the tough campaign to come. Play-offs were on the agenda with a target of 76pts but auto-promo required at least ten more than that total. Today might set the trend. Chris Hughton had added to the squad in summer, signing Shane Duffy, Ollie Norwood, Steve Sidwell, Glenn Murray (loan) and Seb Pocognoli ((loan). Gaetan Bong was back after missing the rest of last term (see below) and Liam Rosenior was now the long-term sidelined casualty. Also returned from lengthy injury were Solly March & Uwe Huenemeier. Bizarrely Beram Kayal (injury) & Dale Stephens (ban) were again recently absent, like a year ago - see season5.
*** match report: Albion went a goal behind early when a long backpass from Bruno put Stockdale in trouble and Lilywhites took advantage (10min). Throughout rest of the match Seagulls threw the proverbial kitchen sink at opponents. Not long into the second half a great team move was converted by Baldock to level scores (54min). And soon after Murray added to his total with a great turn and low poke (65min). More chances came and went but as time ran out the score remained 2-1. Hughton put Stephens in to have & hold for the final ten minutes. But North End, despite reduced to ten thru injury, levelled deep into stoppage. Hughton said, 'with gams as tough as they are, there is no doubt this is two points lost. At 2-1 we should be killing the game off. I was more disappointed with the second conceded because of the timing.' So BHA ended up off the pace in fourth place and on the face of it were probably in for a chase for a play-off position next May.

Visitors were something of an unknown quantity to Brighton fans, as our history was a tad now & then during the Withdean era. But North End came here off the back of a convincing away victory and desperately wanted to consolidate in the Championship again after spending four seasons in League One. Meanwhile Albion were leading the division by 4pts having remained unbeaten since opening day back in August. It was a record-breaking start which fans were very happy to accept following last term's trials & tribulations. There was hardly any comparison to twelve months previously under Sami Hyypia, when Seagulls were down in 20th place with merely 11pts. Chris Hughton came in at New Year to steady the sinking ship and stave off relegation. Now with his new signings and rejuvenated squad, results were consistently good - if not spectacular. A small group of about 21 contracted players provided the match-day 18, with a strong bench and settled side. Others on the fringes were sent out on loan - and Hughton had dispensed with borrowing makeweights from elite clubs. There was a togetherness in this team which to date had produced the unbeaten run. The trick would be to keep it going for as long as Gods of Football allowed. On the day only 24k turned up to watch an anticipated BHA victory.
*** match report: Many Brighton fans considered the goalless draw a case of one point gained rather than two lost - such was the inept nature of perfomance. In fact North End could have prevailed but for man of the match Bruno heading a goal-bound strike off the line. Beforehand Hughton had lost both dynamic central men Kayal (ban) & Stephens (injured), so started in m-f with Crofts and Ince - each with very few apps this term. But it was a poor team display overall and after a hour of futile forward probes, subs Zamora & March made little enough difference to previous attacking moves. Late in the day Holla bolstered m-f to nullify Lillywhites threats when gaining possession. Just prior to stoppage time, Bong was carried off with a knee injury and Albion played the remaining eight minutes with ten men. Hughton said, 'we lacked that bit of quality you need to turn a game, the one moment that is going to make it 1-0, whether it's deserved or not. We were getting into positions of opportunities to score, crossing positions, but didn't make enough of them. In my time here last season that was the type of game we possibly would have lost.' Brighton fans were happy to take positives, still a 4pt gap over the chasing pack and the unbeaten run preserved to boot.

Albion were drawn away at North End for this League Cup third round evening tie. The match was played behind closed doors due to the ongoing covid pandemic of 2020.
Of that match day squad who last played here in the Championship well over three years ago, merely Duffy & Murray were still on BHA books, albeit both were out on seasons loans far beyond actually starting this new Prem campaign. Meanwhile after keeping BHA up manager Chris Hughton had been replaced in May 2019 by Graham Potter. Following retirement BHA legend Bruno was now a development coach at Albion's top-flite Lancing training centre, while Sidwell got booted & suited as a club ambassador. Knockaert had been sold in the summer and Kayal also left at end of contract in July. Norwood now played for Sheff Utd in the Prem but all others had gone off to play for various clubs at lesser levels. Long serving Stephens, who'd payed here in '16 was just on his way north too - joining Burnley.
Potter was expected to field his second string once more, although it was a line up with some Prem experience. He also included youngsters Roberts & Sanders in the starting eleven and a bench of U23s.
*** match report: Albion went thru to the next round with a fairly comfortable victory after upping the ante during the second half. Seagulls started slowly but worked their way into the tie and kept it clean to boot. North End were mainly counter attacking but generally repelling useful threats & forays into their third. Just before the hour mark Jahanbakhsh smashed a volley in from distance following an overlap and deep cross from Bernardo (57min). In response hosts put on all subs, tried to go forward but fell two behind. Mac Allister finished a good move after Gross got right to the byline and cut back (75min). Potter put on late subs and BHA got the job done ok. Their reward was a meeting next week at the Amex with Man Utd - immediately after they'd visited Falmer for a Prem away fixture. Potter now had a decision to make as to who he would play in these two home contests. And with games in all competitions coming thick & fast, there was hardly much time to dwell on psycological whys & wherefors.

memorable match: Season5 (A) - a return to Deepdale since those tough mid noughties C'ship days.
Season6 (A) Championship 14/1/17 - L 2-0.
The first team effectively had 12 days off from competition, as previously they'd played (and won) a fixture at New Year. Last week Albion 'reserves' had turned out at the Amex to register a victory in FAC3 versus League One opponents. Meanwhile North End had unsuccessfully entertained Arsenal, for their very short cup run in 2017. Brighton were unbeaten in 18 in the league and had a good festive period to boot. Again they weren't overworked as that match scheduled between Xmas & New Year was postponed due to fog at the Amex. In December BHA played on the 3rd, 9th, 13th, 17th & 27th then Jan 2nd, increasing the long undefeated series by dww www. Of the squad who played here last term, all were still with BHA apart from Wilson who'd been on loan anyway. Chris Hughton had enhanced his preferred match-day eighteen in summer and there weren't expected to be many additions in the January window.
*** match report: Albion slipped to second in the table after conceding twice and putting in a below par performance. They dominated possession but got caught out twice from soft goals. A needless f-k was pumped into the area and evaded all volt shirts & Stockdale as the header went in (13min). During the second period Seagulls attacked from turnaround but got hit on the counter to a long ball (53min). Hughton immediately sent on Murphy and a little later Hemed to boost attack. With BHA chasing the game also Kayal turned up for the last twenty minutes. In truth visitors did not work the keeper enough and were well held by a physical home outfit backed by hostile fans. Seagulls did have an effort cleared off the line and missed a penalty right at the death. Their late rally came to nought and was a hiding to nothing. Hughton said, 'I want this defeat to prove to my players not to get too complacent and will get some of them to put their feet back on the ground.' Brighton fans thought it was a bad day at the office and were philosophical regarding the undefeated sequence being ended. Hughton said, 'we need to hope this loss does not cost us too dearly in the long run.'

Season5 (A) 5/3/16 - 0-0.
This fixture came at the three quarters stage, which once again was something of a milestone with another promotion push. In previous seasons since '11/12, Albion had been in p-os twice already and fully expected to participate again, or maybe gain automatic promotion. On going north, BHA were in 4th spot, merely 2pts behind league leaders and 11pts clear of the 7th placed club. Seagulls headed those below who wanted Prem fixtures next term... but were behind 3 big fancied outfits with such elite experience and mega money to make it real. On the road BHA had lost a couple and tended to draw matches but if a target in excess of 85pts was to be achieved then wins were needed thru the run in. Consistency was key and clean sheets fundamental, plus a striker in form to turn chances into goals into three points per visit.
*** match report: After the goalless draw Chris Hughton said, 'we're frustrated because we had the ball a lot in the final third on a good pitch. We found it difficult to hold on to it in areas that really mattered, which would have enabled us to set up more.' He also commented on a great save by Stockdale to prevent PNE nicking all points and sending Seagulls back to Sussex pointless. Albion twice had the ball in the net but each effort was ruled out for off-side. Hughton probably played his best eleven but goals had been hard to come by during the season and strikers accumulated low totals in dribs & drabs. A free scoring front man would turn the season around but that was easier said than done. Two subs came on fairly late to try their luck but neither were as prolific as the guy left on the bench - BZ. But hey ho, it was another point on the road and a clean sheet to boot.
