Season1 (A) Championship 13/8/11 - w 0-1 ~ Mackail-Smith.
This was the first away fixture and also a southcoast derby, for the initial season when the Amex finally became home to BHA. Based at Withdean, Seagulls had flown through League1 last term and won eleven on the road to Championship status from employing a mean defence. Gus Poyet in his first full year of management, got Albion to play passing football home & away and wasn't going to change tactics now. He'd added to the squad by pinching Craig Mackail-Smith from Peterboro and buying Will Buckley via Watford for sums totalling of 3.5 million. Meanwhile Pompey were on a downward curve since our last league meeting at Fratton Park, in Aug 2002, when they were heading for the Prem and we bound for League1. Now a new generation of B'ton fans in a different decade, hoped our club was much better equipped to cope effectively at level two.
*** match report: The fixture was played at 100mph and fiercely competitive. Backed by a huge turnout of travelling fans, Albion held their own against early and late onslaughts and weathered the storm. In between we took the game to opposition and matched possession, defensive dominance and attacking flair. Buckley had to go off on 25min after getting chopped more than once. Chances were few and of a premium but Brighton went ahead on stroke of halftime. Sub Noone fed Barnes in the area but his shot was parried by the keeper. Mackail-Smith followed up to open his seasons account (45+ min). In the second period Albion attacked the Milton end where away fans waited for a second goal. Ref upset home support and handed out yellow cards but gave 'em a penalty at the death when Dunk handled. Pompey hit the post and missed a golden opportunity to level. It was all too late, we'd nicked a vital win and got three more points in the bag.

Covid restrictions: no fans allowed.
This was the year of the coronavirus pandemic that had disrupted completion, or prematurely finished, various ongoing football leagues and current cup competitons both home and abroad from March to August. Therefore start of the following season was delayed until September.
Albion hosted Portsmouth for Seagulls entry into the traditional evening all-leagues competition with a second round tie. This was now scheduled during first week of the new Prem season - albeit that campaign started a month later than usual. Like previous league matches the tie was played behind closed doors, without fans attending.
Graham Potter was expected to field a second string line-up, bearing in mind his virtual U23 squad put out for an EFL Cup R3 tie twelve months ago. Pompey came here with lack of game time since competing in delayed p-os during early July, having stopped regular L1 fixures altogether back in mid March. In the event GP played an experienced eleven, supported by U23s from the bench.
*** match report: Albion got the job done after some initial hesitation in front of goal from the get go. Mac Allister finally opened scoring with his first club goal (a header) from a cross by AJ (38min). Jahanbakhsh then added the second with a super hot-shot from left of the area (54min). Bernardo quickly put the tie to bed when nodding in a third via a Gross corner (57min) also for his 1st goal. Gyokeres completed the debut goals hat-trick when adding a fourth with a turn & cross-shot (71min). Potter put on Roberts & Sanders and later Gwargis to do their regular jobs, although against reasonable League One opposition. Steele kept a clean sheet, even when Seagulls were reduced to ten men due to injury for Stephens in later stages. BHA took press plaudits and squad back slapping for a useful reserve team performance on the night. Potter had seen what players on fringes could do and wondered how he would set up next week at Preston in the third round. If Albion seconds could win up there a big-boys fourth round home draw versus Man Utd was probably on the cards.

memorable match: Season1 (H) - a Spanish impact sub that showed Brighton fans what quality players were like.

Season1 (H) Championship 10/3/12 - 2-0 ~ Vicente 2.
It was another fantastic afternoon weather-wise and perfect for football. Portsmouth filled the away end and offered very good support for a club in crisis. Apparently Albion showed the Administrator around and filled in fourteen years of background on how to pull loadsa fat from the fire against all odds. Over twenty thou attended to watch a local derby. Gus Poyet went with the eleven who finished that midweek match here even-steven versus Cardiff. The squad included Vicente and LuaLua but not on-loan Prem pair Razak and Assulin. GP wanted a clean sheet fundamentally, to keep the 2012 points run going (BHA being the one remaining unbeaten side), then anticipated more goals from Albion to push into play-off positions.
*** match report: Brighton set off at one hundred miles per hour but couldn't find the net and had to take a breather at the break. In the second period, Pompey seemed prepared to weather the storm and try and nick one. Gus responded around the hour mark by sending Vicente on. He had been in the wilderness coz of injury and fitness probs but quickly showed class at this level. CMS next took to the field as Albion altered shape and mobility (69min). Soon after with Brighton fans sensing a goal, Vicente won a f-k and slotted home from just outside the area (75m). LuaLua came on late and provided the pass for Vicente to bag a brace in nick of time (90+). He had been the difference between teams at top and bottom, although visitors didn't get rub of the green from Ref. Gus was glad we got into p-o positions and went home wondering what he might do next to try and stay there. Anything appeared possible now if we could up our quality.
