Season3 (A) 25/1/14 FA Cup r4 - W 1-3 ~ Ince, March, Obika.
Albion entered the competition in round3 as usual for a Championship club and saw off fellow lev2 outfit Reading at the Amex. Meanwhile L1 side Vale got thru against L2 Plymouth via a r2 replay, to host Brighton at theirs on a wet late January afternoon. Ex-Seagulls manager Micky Adams, from League One & Two days, was now gaffer at Valiants and this added to the knockout occasion in Burslem. Latest BHA boss Oscar Garcia had fielded a team that included squad players against similar opposition in r3 and again made wholesale changes to his line up. Brezovan, Calderon, Dunk and Forster-Caskey from days of yore, joined big prospect Ince, Chicksen, new boy Obika and development youngster March in the revised starting 11. Shortly before k-o a deluge of biblical proportions soaked the pitch, which may have been considered an advantage to the lower league eleven by tempering visitors regular passing game.
*** match report: Goals from Ince (27min), March (43) and Obika (78) sent Brighton into round5 and a home draw versus new Prem side Hull. In terms of quality and pressure, Albion had half as much possession again than Vale and many more on/off targets. Orlandi's corner was smacked home for MoM Ince's first goal for Seagulls to set the standard. Valiants equalised from a header (36) but travellers were soon back in front when March floated a cross come shot right over the area. Andrews came on during the second period to sit tight in front of the back four and preserve the lead (70). Shortly afterwards Obika rounded the keeper to seal victory over plucky rivals. Old L1 boy LuaLua arrived late on the scene to keep p-o hopeful Valiants on their toes in defence. Seagulls asst coach Nathan Jones said, 'all three of our goal-scorers were under the age of 23. That was very pleasing for us.' Micky Adams, who led Vale out of L2, said, 'I suppose when you start winning games you become a bit sexy, don't you?'
Brezovan, Calderon, Dunk, Upson, Chicksen, Ince, Agustien (Andrews), Forster-Caskey, Orlandi, Obika, March (LuaLua).
