season15 (A) Wed 27/8/25 EFL Cup R2 - 0-6 ~ Boscagli Gruda Gomez Tzimas 2 Watson
Albion drew the present Championship outfit away for the second round in the southern section of this evening knockout competition. Us had got past Colchester 1-0 in R1 at the Kassam Stad earlier this month. Bizarrely Albion too had played that same Essex club also in the EFL Cup R1 during Aug '16 when we were a Championship side prior to meeting Oxford here in R2 - see below. United were currently struggling at level2, being second from bottom with zero points. They were historically an EFL lower league outfit this century and had been in the National League for a spell during the late noughties. While we'd been on the up they'd been dropping thru the divisions - so we kinda missed any meetings at League two, one or later C'ship.
Outline plans were very recently approved for Us to build & move to a new 16k cap stadium at The Triangle, a green-field site near Kidlington.
Meanwhile Brighton fans were disappointed with our Prem campaign to date. At the mo were were 18th with 1pt. Talking points were: 1 - what strength of team would Hurzeler decide to put out? 2 - would we break our duck for scoring 0 goals in open play to date?
*** report: Albion 'reserves' scored goals at 13 20 60 71 77 86 mins to progress into the draw for the third round. But as visitors enjoyed a goal fest, plucky hosts had equal opportunities to get on the score-sheet. However they failed to find the net. And Brighton had Steele to thank for a superb display between the sticks and by keeping a clean sheet. Boscagli, Gruda, Gomez, debut sub Tzimas twice and Watson all contributed to a happy nite out for loyal travelling support. Hurzeler was justified if not vindicated in his selections for producing a winning match-day group, which included U21s to boot. Brighton fans got to watch the Greek kids and several others for the first time and liked what they saw. Defensively we were average but for Steel's heroics and couldn't imagine what Prem opposition would do to that particular rearguard. On a positive note, it bode well for future mix & match line-ups as injuries, bans, tactics etc followed later this season. Seagulls had often flattered to deceive in summer evening rounds of the League Cup then come a cropper well before winter proper. It was Barnsley away next. Onward & upward.

Season6 (A) 23/8/16 League Cup r2 - w 2-4 ~ Adekugbe, LuaLua, Manu, Hemed.
Albion had got past Colchester in the first round at the Amex. Chris Hughton fielded a second eleven, who cruised past lower league opposition 4-0. BHA had not played United before at either Withdean or Falmer, so it was only older fans who remembered the yellow shirts visiting that now defunct Goldstone Ground in Hove. During this campaign's build up in July, Hughton took his extended squad to the Kassam Stadium where Seagulls won 4-0 against the new League One outfit. Goals came from Knockaert & Hemed, prior to meeting Lazio five days later in Brighton! Hughton once again put out a 2nd eleven, including kids Hunt & White and also Huenemeier (capt) on return from long term injury. On the night over 600 away fans travelled to see the tie in a small crowd of 3k.
*** match report: Seagulls got off to a flying start but then stalled until Hughton shook it up, with a change of shape from 451 to 442 around the hour mark. Initially Adekugbe fired in from an acute angle (2min) and Albion had all manner of chances to have a substantial lead by the interval. But inside the half hour United pulled level against run of play as BHA defended desperately (28min). Us continued to compete early into the second period and so Huenemeier was withdrawn on cue, for another striker in Hemed. And therefore Ince dropped from m-f to cent-def in lieu of the German. Maenpaa later made a triple save just prior to LuaLua notching from distance (76min). Next Manu got on the scoresheet with a pop after Norwood released him to outpace opposition (82min). LuaLua then went off, Baldock came on and set up Hemed immediately (85min). Youngster Tilley got a few minutes to add to another ok team performance. At the death Us netted a consolation in injury time. Hughton said, 'I thought we showed great character at 1-1, it was a big test for us. We came through it and managed to get more goals.' So Albion got into the 3rd round and would be grateful to their 1st team players for providing the sharp edge and knockout will to win.
Stats; poss 45%-55%, on target 6-10, off target 9-7, corners 4-7, o/s 0-3, fouls 6-12, yellow 0-3.
