County had just won promotion back to Football League Two for this term, via play-offs in Blue Square Prem. They beat other former FL experienced outfits Grimsby & Wrexham, to get among the pros again for the first time since 1988. Non-league teams regaining such status tended to survive for a while (according to recent stats) so were posted at 10/1 (40/1 to win title) for promo from L2, rather than much shorter odds quoted to go straight down again. Justin Edinburgh was man of the moment at the Welsh club, where he made 'em p-o candidates (3rd) after joining during October of '11/12 (19th). His aim was to get in a couple on-loan from Swansea or Cardiff to bolster the squad that done good. 43yo JE had managed some in the Conference and currently lead L2 following a 4-1 win at home to Accrington Stanley. He then put cat among pigeons when saying, 'I don't know Garcia but there's a lot of good young managers here that I feel could do a better job.' He was on a high and not overwhelmed taking a grassroots sides to the Amex rather than Withdean.
*** match report: Albion lost a tie over two hours that they clearly should have put to bed in normal time. Barnes opened the scoring for hosts inside twenty minutes and 8k inside the community stad settled back for a routine cruise into r2. But County hung in there as Seagulls flopped in front of goal. On/off targets began to accumulate but the ball would not go in between posts. During the second period a makeshift BHA line-up attempted to up the ante, although fickle finger of fate intervened. Calderon was sent off for a 'rash' tackle (67min) and the game swung away from locals. Garcia subbed LuaLua immediately and later new-boy Ince. With ten minutes left visitors netted and extra time beckoned (81min). In the next thirty mins the L2 team scored twice more to send B'ton out and flat on our backs (94m & 102m). What a shambles... look you.
Ankergren, David, Greer, El-Abd, Calderon, Ince (Bridcutt), Agustien, Forster-Caskey (Ulloa), Buckley, Barnes, LuaLua (Masksimenko).

Brighton were one of the last four balls out of that large televised transparent draw bucket and also the final Prem outfit left to get a tie against an EFL club. And guess what? Yeah, we paired with Welsh FAC/EFLC giant killers from ties in recent seasons. Rodney Parade was probably the last place Albion would want to go on a Sunday evening in early January but we had to rock up in order to progress. Brighton fans were anticipating which match-day squad would travel and if Graham Potter would ring New Year changes to regular Prem line-ups. Albion were struggling at elite level once more but meanwhile County were second in League Two. Their pitch had suffered waterlogging and could be a bog, (also lately postponements due to freezing), which kinda favoured home advantage over English southern softies used to pukka smooth green surfaces like level billiard tables.
The tie was goalless until stoppage time but not finally settled before a penalty shoot out ensued. Albion went thru to R4, although it was anything but alright on the night. Seagulls had not far short of three quarters of possession during two hours of play. However putting the ball into the net was an ongoing problem to be solved in every game played this term. Potter put out a Prem strength side, backed up by U23s on the bench. Also Percy Tau included as he'd been recalled from on loan in Belgium. Anyway visitors were camped in hosts half and a seige got underway. County dug in and let BHA have the ball. They held out until March smacked in a very late effort (90min). Then Webster netted an og after a big error by Steele (96min). Following extra time it went down to pens. Steele was the hero, saving four spot kicks while Blue shirts toiled to score 4 from 7. It was a lottery but our winning number eventually came up. Brighton fans could hardly stand the suspense, especially having been in control of open play throughout. It was yet another contest where we'd flattered to deceive and failed to convert chances. Potter took the positives as expected, after all said and done blue & white came thru a potential giant killing in Wales on the plus side. Fans knew the transfer window was open and wondered just what might happen next during January.
