This reciprocal May '25 fixture was the 18th of 19 at home during the run-in (Q4). The reverse game was 19 Oct '24 after the second international break (Q1) - see away scroll further below. Last term we'd met here during early Sept '23, when giving Toon another beating. We had drawn the away match last year during May '24, in a poor run-in finishing sequence. At the halfway stage (Q2) we had xpts and they had xpts. Then at the three-quarters stage (Q3) we had xpts and they had xpts. Now we had xpts and they had xpts. Our Prem record at the Amex versus Magpies was; wdd wdd w - in all seven seasons to date. We hadn't lost at this level. Current home form was; W D L F A tba. Visitors away form was: W D L F A tba. At the moment Brighton were xth, while Newcastle were xth from x games played. At the halfway stage we were xth and they were xth. At the three-quarters stage we were xth and they were xth. In the last three campaigns we'd been 9, 6 & 8 at the halfway stage and finished 9, 6 & 11. Albion were looking for more positive points against northern raiders. Brighton lost to Newcastle 1-2 in New Jersey as part of the PL Summer Series held in America during July '23. Toon earlier drew with Villa 3-3 & Chelsea 1-1. Back for friendlies in Europe; they hosted Fiorentina 2-0 (H) and Villarreal 4-0 (H). Today's early Sept teatime contest came prior to the first international break. It was also our third home match from four fixtures thus far. Albion finished 6th (62pts) and Toon 4th (71pts) last term, giving a 9pts -ve difference. So in addition both clubs would compete for the first time in Europe, tho separate knockout competitions this season. Visitors were also anticipating to consolidate as a top-six club. Our Prem record at the Amex versus Magpies was; wdd wdd in six seasons to date. We'd never lost here previously and more often than not they'd been goalless or tight affairs involving parity. Now going into this fourth Prem match BHA were 6th and NU were 13th from 3 played. At close of the Aug transfer window; Rob Sanchez was sold to Chelsea (25m) and Aaron Connolly went to Hull. Mac Allister had very much earlier gone to Liverpool (35m) but James Milner came the other way. Also Mahmoud Dahoud (B Dortmund) & Joao Pedro (Watford 30m) joined us by end of June. Bart Verbruggen (gk) (Anderlecht 16m) & Igor Julio (Fiorentina 15m) got aboard in July. The Friday before mid-Aug Saturday's opening-day kickoff Moises Caicedo got offered a deal from Liverpool for a Prem record 111m. But he actually went to Chelsea for 115m. Just before summer deadline day Carlos Baleba (Lille 23m) & Ansu Fati (Barca loan) were added to the squad. Meanwhile the northeast outfit had spent 134m in the summer transfer window on 4 buys, plus an on loan player. Toon boss Eddie Howe again had the bar set high following his exploits as top English manager last season. Based on previous meetings Brighton were now looking for a third victory on home turf against supposedly resurgent Newcastle.
*** match report: first of all; this victory was more than just about our talented teenager. Second of all; beating Newcastle fair & square revealed how far Albion had come in reaching the next level. A year ago Graham Potter flew the nest and Roberto de Zerbi arrived. He has taken us into Europe and anticiptation is to challenge for similar successful status throughout the campaign ahead. By comparison visitors are expected to hit greater heights, both at home in the Prem and abroad in their Champions League group. Today Ferguson put them to the sword with a great hat-trick that exposed Toon as elite hopefuls rather than nailed-on big-club class. He grabbed three by; a reflex prod when the keeper parried, an accurate shot from down range and a deflected on-target dig (27,65,70 mins). Travellers did have serious chances to score but it wasn't until stoppage time that they buried one (92 mins). De Zerbi was pleased with overall squad performance, Brighton fans enjoyed jumping out of their seats at least three times and neutrals would be tempted to follow BHA, at least via media & socials if not actually by road, rail or aeroplane. Kids & teenagers in the family stand are growing up used to watching exciting live football with big names so close on the pitch, plus wearing replica home shirts in our trademark blue & white. Older supporters are also very happy to be here and savour these good times after a prolonged journey from gutter to the stars. Onwards & upwards!

Season12, 6th Premier League (H) Sat 13/8/22 - 0-0
An August heatwave for our first home match and taken by tickets purchased, (mind the gap) a sell out. Brighton fans had got used to pre-viewing this seasonal fixture as a probable win, being unbeaten in five hostings beforehand (see scroll below). We'd won twice here; in Sept '17 & Mar '21 and drew three; in Apr '19, Jul '20 and Nov '21 (seasons 7-11). But prior to the current campaign we saw PL goalposts move northwards in the balance of financial power. Both clubs had done those obligatory hard yards since our initial C'ship meeting here of Feb '17 (see Season6 below) and were eventually ready to kick on. It was a different ball-game now and one where winner takes all. Home form was integral to success and much depended on getting results no matter how expensive visiting squads cost their megabucks owners. Albion signed Julio Enciso (10m) in June from South America but Yves Bissouma left for Spurs (25m). Deniz Undav, Kaoru Mitoma & Kacper Kozlowski were also added to the Prem squad following their last season with RUSG. PoY Marc Cucurella left for Chelsea (60m) but we took Levi Colwill on loan in return. Our multiple out-on-loan list included; Duffy, Connolly, Zeqiri, Khadra, Karbownik, Ab Sima, plus some U21s and also new signing Simon Adingra. Meanwhile Arab backed United spent 57m by start of the season. And this being an early fixture, were anticipated to splash the cash further in both current open and future (January) transfer windows.
*** match report: on perhaps the hottest August afternoon to date at Falmer, in a blazing summer heatwave, hosts & visitors played out a goalless draw. But there were plenty of thrills & spills to entertain all sections of the Amex, including sun-drenched lower east & south stands basking at 90+ degrees. The players produced a pukka Prem performance, benefitting from a water break midway thru each half to prevent dehydradtion. Both teams attacked with purpose and shared fairly equal amounts of possession. Chances came and went, especially for hosts who had two efforts cleared off the line. Visitors keeper saved, parried, held or stopped all other on targets, earning him away fans devotion & home fans respect. Graham Potter put on three subs after the hour mark in required tactical fashion and all made an impact. This term 5 subs are available but neither coach used full allocations to fill time or insert fresh legs throughout demanding conditions of excess heat. New boy Mitoma got to debut and appeared a handy acquisition. Other recent squad members sat on the bench, although Maupay was notable for his absence - being linked to possible transfer. Brighton fans went home hot but fairly happy and Potter thought the display a decent one but rub of the green on a dry pitch hadn't favoured home advantage. We'd take the point, knowing football plans are ok until kickoff and then it's down to what happens in the moment.

Season11, 5th Premier League (H) Sat 6/11/21 - D 1-1 ~ Trossard.
Given that long distance between us geographically, we now considered how far each club had come in terms of this fifth year at elite level. In time & space it was now November, so the first quarter had just been completed. Back in summer BHA sold off the proverbial silver plus other bits & pieces cheaply - metaphorically speaking. During August Albion signed merely a couple of Prem prospects to add to a previously thinned out match-day squad. Potter went with usual personnel considered being up to Prem level and sent a whole host of fringe players out on loan. Thus far that strategy had been very successful in actual of return of points gained for Q1. Time only would tell for the rest. Up north in pre-season Steve Bruce returned to a budget remit between a northern rock and a hard place on the Tyne. An ongoing tale of trauma, drama and also inertia reopened on a new chapter. He did tho spend 25m on making last term's on loan signing permanent. Then in October an Arab backed investment outfit purchased the club for 305m and suddenly sky was the only limit. Newcastle were now richest in the Prem and probably Europe. But almost inevitably Bruce was soon history. On the evening of play a new Toon manager watched from the grandstand while a caretaker occupied the dugout.
*** match report. Albion led via a dubious penalty converted by Trossard (24min) but lost the plot thereafter from an underwhelming display. United got an equaliser beyond the hour mark (66min) while hosts made heavy weather of breaking them down. A less than entertaining affair appeared to be going Seagulls way following that VAR intervention but locals couldn't capitalise on a soft lead. The idea was to move down flanks and get in behind, all very well in theory but a tad disjointed in reality. It was as if we couldn't join the dots, make incisive passes or open 'em up and go for the throat. United sat back and parked the bus, while Albion were too slow on transition and over playing around the area. Too many players had an off night, including subs who were thrown in to make things happen. Potter was happy we got a point, which was ok really coz Sanchez got sent off at the death for a foul as last man. Dunk went between posts as ten men saw out time. Toon fans turned up in big numbers and were collectively vocal. Brighton fans had little to sing about and went home feeling frustrated about seeing old problems we thought had been fixed.

This Amex evening fixture completed the threequarters stage of our fourth Prem season. Magpies had visited last July during that belated run-in, after suspension and restart of the Prem from March to June - see season9 below. Albion, like United, were intent on getting as many points as possible to keep well clear of any danger lurking underneath their forever lowly positions. Now another page turned and both clubs held ambitions to push upwards rather than constantly flirt with bottom six positions. Graham Potter's remit was to increase points tallies from the Amex at expense of similarly placed sides who might set up to stop us scoring. However the truth this term was that each side again struggled to put points on the board sufficient to break clear of the cut-off line above the drop zone. In fact three points were all that marked the difference between feeling fairly safe and extremely nervous.
*** match report: After famine came the feast. Albion netted three terrific goals, kept a clean sheet and eased six points clear of the drop zone with a game in hand. Trossard (45+3), Welbeck (51) and Maupay (68) fired in a trio of great strikes to settle the matter of who could actually score and who could not. Seagulls dominated play and put in a display worthy of higher levels, following a season without too much good luck around month by month. Each player was hitting 7s & 8s for individual ratings, which as a team effort sealed a second super win at the Amex. Magpies were not great anyway but hosts prevented them getting into the game and were always on the front foot. Setting up in a loose 343, with front men wide, allowed numbers to get forward and exploit the defensive block. Potter was a relieved man, luvved it that the plan came together on this night and also didn't need to tinker or be reactive. He put out Moder on starting debut, which also proved successful and an asset to our match-day squad. BHA now looked a half decent Prem outfit... at least by standards of performance tonight.

Season9, 3rd Premier League (H) Monday 20/7/20 - 0-0.
PL suspended to restart from 17/6/20 after Sat 9/5/20 postponed. Revised evening fixture played behind closed doors without fans attending.
This was scheduled for the last home match as our third PL campaign drew to a belated close due to that killer Covid-19 pandemic. And it highlighted another dramatic domestic run-in, when Albion previously hosted four big-six clubs in a row, so on the face of it entertaining United was less of a contest - albeit several extra months added since we had last met in the Prem. But many Brighton fans still remembered late last season here (see Season8 below) when Seagulls were left grounded during a traumatic & ever stressful springtime that immediately on ending cost Chris Hughton his job. To date Graham Potter had also all but mathematically secured survival once more. But Tony Bloom wanted BHA to be a top ten side, so to again be in this lowly position wasn't exactly any sort of improvement. Seagulls did not score enough goals, hence could not record sufficient wins to climb the table. And although the defence was capable of keeping clean sheets, it had been opened up way too easily lately. Rookie Prem boss Potter stuck to a mantra of expansive football, therefore defeat remained probable in any match where opposition found the net, especially if they scored first. Having said all that, Brighton were odds on to likely go again in the Prem next term. However, squad signings were essential to facilitate this visionary elite dreamwork in progress.
* * * match report: Albion kept a clean sheet and thus the point required to compete in the elite next term. It was not a game to write home about but the end justified the means at dusk of the day. The first half was forgetable and the second only came to life when this dour contest opened out in closing stages. United put on a big striker in a bid to win it late and so Potter added Duffy to his defensive subs as Albion clung on for even steven. Brighton fans were relieved to finally have maths in our favour and the club was pleased to know Prem style revenues would roll on thru 20/21. Lockdown had changed the game for our squad, who hit the ground running on restart and knocked up points needed to open a gap to fellow strugglers. What we wanted now was to take that sort of positive form into next season and get more wins to boot. As goal-scoring icon Jimmy Greaves once said, 'it's a funny old game.' But he realised it wasn't so funny if he hadn't scored enough goals to get his team those vital points. Season8 2nd Premier League (H) Sat 27/4/19 - 1-1 ~ Gross.
The penultimate home fixture arrived with a revised teatime kickoff for PL reasons regarding pay tv coverage. And the situation to date was Albion badly needed to win and hope drop-zone rivals Cardiff lost their 3pm ko away at already relegated Fulham. That would ease increasing pressure to halt falling thru the trap door after our second Prem season. Nobody had seen the major collapse in form at previous fortress Amex coming quite so dramatically during 2019 but here we were in the run-in and it didn't make for comfortable reading. BHA home sequence to date was; wdl wwd wld wld lwl ll. Those last two defeats had been debacles and set off a stadium chorus of loud booing on final whistles. So writing was now on the blank wall to reverse that losing run and again go get three points - one way or another.
* * * match report: Albion were booed off at halftime having conceded a soft goal and not got it together at all. Chris Hughton's strategy of playing 442 had flopped and hosts didn't look like hitting visitors anywhere, anyhow or from any distance. Toon netted the opener with ease, finding space at a cross with unmarked strikers (18min). After the interval Hughton reshaped to 4411, leaving Andone in the stand, inserting March on flanks while Gross moved inside. Kayal soon pulled up short and limped off for Bissouma to replace. Then Knockaert arrived for Izquierdo and things now began to rock & roll. Suddenly Seagulls were swooping on Magpies area and causing them some problems. Great work by Bruno saw his deep cross headed back by Murray and Gross got there to nod thru the keeper (75min). Three sides of the Amex rose as one & went wild with delight, hardly believing blue&white were playing good stuff after many weeks watching drivel. Hughton said, 'it's my responsibility not to feel too much until we know that mathematically we are safe. But for sure the feeling at the moment is better than it was at half time.' Brighton fans waiting on concourses had cheered defeat of Cardiff prior to kickoff but then had to suffer for three quarters of this contest before relief became the prime emotion. We lived to fight another day but hoped the Welsh club were going down the following week to spare us any more ptsd from second season syndrome.

Season7 1st Premier League (H) 24/9/17 - W 1-0 ~ Hemed.
TV cameras set kickoff on a Sunday at 16:00 for a worldwide audience. This fixture, now at highest level, came seven months after Albion had lost to United here in the Championship on the last day of February. And what also stuck in Brighton fans throats since, was the fact BHA then handed NU the title in May, when failing to gain more than one point from the last three matches. Finishing as runners up wasn't exactly what Tony Bloom, Chris Hughton and Seagulls supporters wanted. So Bloom put more money into the pot and therefore Hughton added significantly to the squad during pre-season and into August - albeit strikers were conspicuous by absence. Opening Prem fixtures had been as tough as expected and survival was the main aim, now the elite league had finally been reached. The big talking point was, could Brighton regularly score enough goals to secure points to keep us out of the bottom three. On the day it was warm for time of year and perfect for footy in front of a sell-out Amex crowd.
* * * match report: Albion got 'revenge' but nobody wanted to see it recorded as a quote in print. And Brighton fans left the Amex happy they were averaging a little over 1pt/gm - which was necessary for ongoing survival. After a goalless first half Seagulls restarted on the front foot and soon went ahead. From a f-k by Gross, Stephens nodded down and Hemed turned the ball high into the net (51min). United threatened to restore parity and Albion were on the backfoot thereafter. Toon, backed by a near 3k support, brought on 3 subs to change the game. Likewise Murphy was introduced for Knockaert with the match still in balance. BHA held out and it was job done. Hughton said, 'we had to dig deep to see it out and show that bit of resilience. There wasn't a lot in it but overall I think we deserved it.'

Season6 Championship (H) 28/2/17 - L 1-2 ~ Murray.
This fixture got re-scheduled from 28 Jan '17 - due to a clash with FA Cup 4th round ties. Bizarrely both clubs were knocked out on that date by lower league opposition! But each had fielded a reserve side, hoping to progress anyway by big-name default into the 5th round. Since those late January debacles, Seagulls & Magpies swapped places at various times on top of the table during February. Now the crunch match had arrived and current leaders BHA were mindful of their home record against teams vying for automatic promotion last term. The Amex was almost a fortress this season but 2nd placed Magpies had a formidable record on the road during this campaign so far. Albion led the division by a single point, so victory for either team here would make them undisputed no.1.
*** match report: Albion lost top spot in a frantic climax in front of tv cameras at a full Amex and Brighton fans were gutted to boot. Ref pointed to the spot when Murray got bundled over at a corner and he duly scored (14min). Then Pocognoli soon went off injured but BHA resisted visitors attacks for rest of that half. The second period was also like a stalemate until Magpies subbed for a striker. With ten minutes to go Stockdale punched out at a corner but the incoming shot deflected twice before going into the top corner as he & Tomori tried to clear (81min). Hughton responded with two further changes, Kayal & March. United also made another sub. Just prior to stoppage it was that man who drove in the winner as Dunk & Duffy tried to block while Stockdale dove the wrong way (89min). Albion were reeling and incapable of reply - shell-shocked and a spent force. Hughton said, 'we've been beaten by a very good side and our contribution to the game was very good. At times we didn't keep possession as well as we have in other games. I thought we started very well and over 90 minutes you are going to have difficult periods.' At end of the day Seagulls were retreating under pressure and Stockdale made some saves. But blue & white were not strong enough going forward to create & take enough chances to get a more positve result.

Season2 (H) 5/1/13 FA Cup r3 - W 2-0 ~ Orlandi, Hoskins.
By bizarre coincidence, or luck of the draw, Albion again hosted the northeast Prem giants, twelve months since their previous encounter. United were in danger of getting sucked into a relegation scrap and hadn't yet won away in elite company this season. Also they'd conceded 25 goals on the road in return for merely four points. Toon had injury probs and their stars were indisposed, absent or being transferred. Once more this tie was selected for tv coverage but this time with a 12.30pm kick-off. Gus Poyet had most of his squad available for selection and apparently even Vicente was now fit. He hadn't played in the league to date and wasn't named sub previously either. Meanwhile there was talk of squad transfer activity during that open January window. On the day 21k attended after brunch at thirty quid per seat.
*** match report: Newcastle's lack of first team regulars made for a more even playing field and Brighton duly took home advantage. The Poyet passing mantra held sway and Seagulls got forward in numbers when frequent opportunity arose. Just over the half hour, Bridge got right down to the by-line and cut one back. Orlandi juggled in the area and hooked the ball into the net (33min). Gus said, 'you want a moment that gives value for money and it was a sensational piece of control and a wonderful finish.' United made a double sub for the second period but it backfired and they got nowt. To make matters worse they lost their captain to two bookables and were reduced to ten men for most of that time. Gus sent on LuaLua around the hour mark and later introduced Hoskins. He duly made sure of a happy ending by running clear and bagging a late goal (87min) after good work by David. Albion had two thirds of possession, although visitors went 60-40 for territorial advantage. On/off targets were in single figures but the difference was in finding the net, where BHA edged it against a lacklustre outfit. Suddenly fans were not talking about anticipated transfers any more and wondering about round4 opponents.

Season1 (H) 28/1/12 FA Cup r4 - W 1-0 ~ Buckley.
Both Cup competitions for Albion, in our very first year at the Amex, had previously seen likes of lowly Gillingham, plus Prem outfits Sunderland and Liverpool visiting and now Newcastle arrived from up north too. It had added excitement to our inaugural Championship season and also to coffers with Falmer sell outs. Brighton had been fortunate with home draws but only squeezed past Wrexham in r3replay via a penalty shoot-out in Wales. Gus Poyet was sending out teams playing football on the floor, who were confident enough to test those travelling elite sides. This tie was covered by TV, so k-o got put back to after 5pm. On a cold evening, the gate was over 21k. A nice little earner my son.
*** match report: Newcastle dominated the match, which was confirmed by stats such as on/off targets, pass rates, possession and successful tackles. They might have won all the numbers but one vital fact emerged as temperature dropped - they couldn't score. Credit to BHA for defending resolutely and making it hard for Toon to register a goal. Albion operated 4123, where both Sparrow and JF-C were prepared to push on in support of CMS. Getting to the break goalless was encouraging for Seagulls, although the Prem big-boys shoulda easily been ahead but for poor finishing. Navarro came on after turn around and Harley joined him just over the hour with Albion still in it. On 76mins, Buckley broke down left flank and fired across the area. A defender deflected the low ball up and over his keeper for an og of sorts. Boots were flying in when visitors got frustrated and Ref was lenient to say the least. Albion clung on to a slender lead, Hoskins arriving very late to wind down the clock. It was a historic victory to add to the club's new scrapbook and almost felt like glory days of yore.

Season13, 7th Premier League (A) Sat 11/5/24 - D 1-1 ~ Veltman
This reciprocal fixture was eight whole months after hosting Toon in Sept and now our very last away game of the season. Back during mid-summer pre-season build-up Newcastle twice hosted European opposition prior to the Prem kickoff and their Champions League debut - then going out early at the group stage during December. In the January transfer window no big business was done by Prem clubs due to enforced fair play rules & regs. And authorities were cracking down on past & present financial breaches. Since joining the elite with NU, Albion had finished 15, 17, 15, 16, 9, 6, while Newcastle were 10, 13, 13, 12, 11, 4. So far hosts habitual home record was; W12 D3 L3 F48 A21 - a northeast fortress. Our Prem record at St James Park versus Magpies was; dwd wll - in all six seasons to date. But we'd lost the last twice. In latter campaigns there were plenty of goals scored up both ends. Current away form was; W4 D5 L9 F24 A34 - not very good with half of matches lost. At the moment Brighton were 11th, while NU were 6th from 35 games played. They had changed managers 3 times during our Prem years, tho with recent Arab backing seemed to have the right coach in situ. And Eddie Howe appeared water-tight for now. Based on previous meetings Brighton were looking to avoid a third straight defeat at Newcastle. Our campaign had gradually lost momentum from the halfway stage, including both FA Cup & Europa League exits, so in some respects we were merely playing for pride at this late stage of the run-in. And of course, getting a top ten finish was still required.
*** match report: we didn't get beat but didn't win either in a game that saw one goal apiece at the final whistle. Veltman netted at a corner routine to put Albion ahead (18mins). And as Magpies pressed for a leveller the crimson shirts of our away eleven held firm. Approaching halftime injured Veltman was replaced by Lamptey. Then in stoppage time hosts bagged the equaliser (45+5mins). After turnaround Brighton held off more attacks and De Zerbi inserted all subs as the match ran out of necessary minutes to change stalemate. In the end we went home with a hard-fought point, which travelling support could see was due to our defence. Up front Seagulls lacked a forward player capable of finding the net - an ongoing problem that had bugged second half of our campaign. Football is about scoring goals, so De Zerbi praised the performance but yet again used mitigation of this season's long injury list to deflect from our poor return in recent weeks. He wasn't going to carry the can for the first-team squad not being large enough or having sufficient depth to endure rigours of the Prem, Cups, plus extra excursions into Europe. Every club would incur injuries and this is accepted as part & parcel of multi-competition pro soccer, including internationals. Hindsight tells us how brutal the attrition rate becomes as more games & ties are added, then fixtures later rescheduled or fitted in to suit the big business operating system. Albion have now hired two specialist doctors to evaluate past experience and how they might help with conditioning for future periods of pressure on medical services. Meanwhile Brighton do continue with several men down from optimum strength in any match-day group.

Season12, 6th Premier League (A) Thur 18/5/23 - L 4-1 ~ Undav
This fixture got rescheduled deep into the run-in due to Toon's appearance in the EFL Cup final on 26 Feb. Last term's defeat had halted a positive trend at St James Park over five previous Prem campaigns (see away scroll below). We initially drew there in Dec '17 then first won in Oct '18. That short sequence repeated for Sept '19 and Sept '20 before our first loss in Mar '22 (seasons 7-11). And that last result set the bench-mark for hosts domestic standards on & off the pitch during their new era as money-bags modern history makers in black & white. Albion head coach Roberto de Zerbi arrived a month after Albion played Toon, when beginning our 6th Prem campaign at the Amex in August under Graham Potter (see home scroll above). Brighton went to Dubai and Newcastle to Saudi Arabia for their warm-weather camps during those '22 World Cup finals in December. Since then both Seagulls & Magpies were flying high, with places in Europe up for grabs by end of the month.
*** match report: another in & out performance from Albion struggling thru seven games in May to complete a hectic schedule. But if the club are intent on playing in Europe next season then Thursday nights away shall be par for the course. Seagulls passing game was initially thwarted by Magpies with pressing tactics and high intensity on & off the ball. Visitors first conceded an own goal via Undav at a basic corner routine (22mins). Then shot themselves in the foot again just prior to halftime at another set piece from an aerial ball (45+2mins). Undav got one back from a Gilmour thru ball soon after turnaround (51mins). However an improved second half display amounted to nought because a possible equaliser stayed out of reach. At the death Toon twice caught crimson shirts going forward and exploited spaces to good effect (89 & 91mins). De Zerbi said we deserved to lose but was complicit in defeat. We could see the tough pathway ahead since FA Cup ties added to game time. Brighton have been over-achieving for months with a small squad feeling full force of unrelenting pressure from Prem fixtures. It has taken a heavy toll on young minds & bodies. The bench was made up with kids and both Offiah & Peupion got run outs late in the night. Of course all PL2 lads brought into the squad have to begin finding feet at some stage and are in no way criticised for lack of experience. And there is a big gap between old sweats like Dunk & Gross and youngsters like Enciso & Buonanotte in terms of trade-craft at elite level. At the mo Albion has several first eleven regulars sidelined, while those with merely a few apps in total make up numbers. From this situation we can anticipate improvement eventually but it may be next term that consistency develops across all competitons... maybe various knockouts as well.

Season11, 5th Premier League (A) Sat 5/3/22 - L 2-1 ~ Dunk.
Our record at St James Park was good in the Prem and Albion had also kept four consecutive clean sheets there in as many years. This mid-campaign return up to the distant northeast would measure respective progress by our previous perpetual bottom-six south-coast outfit. Going into the game BHA's away sequence was: wwd ddl ddd wdw l. Goals scored were: 2 1 1 0 2 0 1 1 1 3 1 2 0 = 15. Not too bad a return in picking up 19pts or 57.5% of total points thus far. Scorers to date were: Maupay 5, Trossard 2, Welbeck 2, Mac Allister 3, Mwepu, Webster & Burn - the latter then became a Newcastle player since the January transfer window deadline. Graham Potter had employed a nucleus of 18 players to get points in the Prem, so there wasn't much wriggle room for covering injured regulars, bans, loss of form or other reasons to be found on fringes. And Newcastle were currently on a good run under their replacement manager, appeared a resurgent force and an immediate threat to Albion ambitions.
*** match report. Albion crashed to defeat, conceding two quick goals inside 15 minutes. This occured after starting well but visitors were then hit on the counter and a sucker punch header to follow (12 & 14 min). Early into the second period Dunk headed in from a Gross corner to give Seagulls some hope of scoring again (55min). But it wasn't to be despite having overwhelming possession and playing offensive football. It was BHA's fourth loss in a row and this reversal set a record for our longest run of Prem defeats. Graham Potter wasn't too unhappy because he thought the performance was good bar putting the ball into opponents net. Brighton fans from near & far went home disappointed but we'd been in the Prem enough seasons to know such sequences happen and it is about responses for the long haul. Albion's squad was a mix of Prem regulars and those with many less apps. You cannot teach experience and so it is a learning curve for the players across various sets of circumstances. And maybe we'd just have better luck next time to boot.

Season10, 4th Premier League (A) Sun 20/9/20 - W 0-3 ~ Maupay 2, Connolly.
This fixture was our first away trip of the fourth Prem season, albeit a month or so later than usual due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which delayed completion of the previous campaign until late July - see season9 in home section above. The match was played on a Sunday lunchtime behind closed doors without fans attending.
In May 2017 Albion handed United the Championship title at the death - something that still rankled with older fans who'd lived thru those terrific or tough Withdean ups & downs of the pre-Falmer noughties. That said, we'd never actually met Magpies this century until 2016 but these days fans felt we are more on an even footing with that underachieving northeast giant. Seagulls visits to St James Park hadn't been so bad recently but that was no reason for complacency, unrealistic expectations or literally missing the point in going there. Graham Potter had revised the small squad: Lallana (free) and Veltman (1m) came in after dispensing with services of Balogun, Kayal, Schelotto, Knockaert (10m), Montoya, Mooy (4m) and Button (1m), thus balancing the books to boot. Academy product Ben White was added but Duffy & Murray had gone out on full seasons loans. Brighton fans thought maybe we were presently a proven Prem striker short. For the current colourful sartorial record, Albion's first choice away shirt was now yellow with blue shorts & trim for this make or break Prem campaign. In the event they actually played in blue home shirts.
*** match report: Inside the first ten minutes Seagulls flew fast to go two up. Lamptey was ripping down right flank and got involved in both goals. He was first tripped in the box and Maupay put away the pen (4min). Next he set Trossard away whose cross was turned in by Maupay for a second score (7min). Albion racked up more positive stats until halftime. After the break Toon chased the game but visitors held firm. Lamptey went off injured around the hour mark so BHA changed to 442. Connolly added a third from a curling shot following a superb build up of passes from deep (83min). It became a top drawer display, although slightly spoiled at the death. Bissouma got sent off after Ref checked the pichside monitor for dangerous play (89). Potter was very happy otherwise, having been vindicated for not including a striker on the bench. Brighton fans watching on tv had added excitement to go with their local Sunday lunches and drink. The match-day team was youngest to date in the Prem and appeared to set a trend in line with Potter's mantra for developing young talent.

You didn't have to go way oop north pet to see the game live - pay tv profitably accommodated at teatime. Also highlights shown on motd for free around bedtime as usual for good measure. Eleven months ago Albion rocked up here, when Toon were an outline of what they should be, to make it well worth the journey for value (see season8 below). Now both club's managers/coaches were different but the same prize was at stake, namely picking up enough points during the first quarter (Q1) to hopefully forecast future mid-table mediocrity. That would be a great goal to aim for at this level, for sure. And guess what? Could this actually be our first six-pointer type of clash between ex-Championship title-holders and runners up? Well, suffice to say Albion had, a little too easily, 'handed over' that silverware to reside in a Tyneside trophy cabinet, so we'd still got to prove capable of taking this contest extra seriously. And the loser here would next be immersed within PL drop-zone peril, plus threats of going back to level2 as a result. As a fundamental, BHA had to: 1 - keep a cleans sheet, 2 - score an away goal.
* * * match report: Albion dominated possession, kept a clean sheet, strung a few moves together but failed to score. Stats show a lot of nice numbers but cannot reveal the lack of killer instinct BHA need to develop in order to enhance a basic points tally for survival. The game was there for taking but Toon competed enough to share spoils, while Seagulls flapped around the box. And of course they also had chances, which on another day may have soiled our sheet. Potter said, 'I am disappointed we did not win. Our performance level was good. We were just lacking in the final third but that will come.' All very fine but Brighton fans have been there before and proof of getting the best result is in scoring... as Hughton realised when Bloom's patience ran out during the run-in last term. It's a results driven business after all.

Season8 2nd Premier League (A) Sat 20/10/18 - W 0-1 ~ Kayal.
Albion took their trip right up to Northumberland a little earlier this time around (see season7) and was following the second international break (UEFA National League). Dunk had received a first call up but only sat on England's bench. Going into the fixture Albion's away form continued winless since beginning of last November, a tad short of 12 months ago. Points on the road had been hard to come by last season and also again this term to date. Mind you, Seagulls visited Watford (2-0), Liverpool (1-0), Southampton (2-2) & Man City (2-0) so far, which hadn't exactly figured as an easy start. On the day Chris Hughton selected an attacking side in these circumstances.
* * * match report: Albion broke their duck for the year and got the proverbial monkey off their back up north. The game was not without incident and Murray was carried off to hospital unconscious after a clash of heads (15m). Locadia deputised up front and did his best in lieu of our talisman. Then prior to the half hour Duffy rose at a corner, Izquierdo took a pop at his header and Kayal deflected it in (29m). The second period was backs to the wall defending where Seagulls were supreme. Magpies couldn't hit a barn door but Ryan held out for a clean sheet to boot. Late substitutions ensured BHA kept shape tactically and also faith to see it out to the death. Hughton said, 'Glenn is ok. There are rules with concussion. We faced a lot more shots than normal. Our keeper and centre halves were outstanding.' Brighton fans from the north who made it there had a rare occasion to celebrate victory and couldn't hardly wait until their heroes in green were back in their neck of the woods once more.

Season7 1st Premier League (A) 30/12/17 - 0-0.
Going right up to the northeast for the last PL fixture of 2017 wasn't exactly an easy ride because the traditional New Year Day match was merely two days later. Xmas w/e games had seen a first win in eight overall for Albion since early November. Then in the Boxing Day contest in London it was a familiar return to losing plus failing to score. Results on the road had been, 2-0, 0-0, 2-1, 2-0, 0-3, 0-1, 1-0, 2-0, 2-0, 2-0, so there was obviously an ongoing problem with goal scoring. Once Albion went behind they had a proverbial mountain to climb - alarmingly there was also one contest where BHA had lost after leading. So in simple terms, score first and keep a clean sheet throughout. Part of the modus operandi was to play 451 variations on the road, which wasn't really cutting the mustard in the final third. To date Seagulls were not able to score from corners or set pieces and defenders & midfield weren't contributing to the meagre goals tally. A way had to be found to up the ante and find the net pdq!
* * * match report: Albion added a second goalless draw to their away stats on an afternoon when they could have gotten three points but for scoring that elusive goal. The numbers below tell the story of a game which probably didn't reach PL standard for offensive execution in the final third. The biggest problem from visitors point of view was failure to test the keeper and follow in to pick up second chances. Set pieces were once again cause for let down where Seagulls attempts on goal lacked quality. Ryan made at least two important saves and kept a clean sheet with help of a resolute rearguard in front of him. Hughton swapped Murray for Hemed after an hour but persisted with starting wingers even though Brighton fans anticipated 13million man Izquiero to appear any moment. Hughton said, 'it showed where both teams are. You have to play at a good level. Anything less and you get beaten. You have to stay in games.' Reflecting on 2017, BHA support couldn't really have too many complaints with the Championship & Premiership campaigns, although that foundation wasn't yet solid enough to predict remaining where we were after coming so far.

Albion had not met Magpies for a fixture in the modern era after turn of the century. While BHA rebuilt at Withdean & Falmer during the noughties & teenies, United were a Prem club until falling back into the second tier at end of last term. And were pre-season favourites to go straight back up as they had as title winners in 2010, when spending a single season in the Championship. Seagulls went to St James Park on a roll, being unbeaten in league & cup to date. Chris Hughton had retained bulk of players and also enhanced the squad in close season. On paper we were a stronger side than previously, when outsiders to challange for automatic promotion. In the event Brighton had reached play-offs for the third time in five years, missing auto-promo on goal difference. Those outfits with Prem experience took all 3 places to go up and Hughton knew a repeat of last year's consistent form & unbeaten runs was maybe tougher this time around.
In front of 49k, Albion gave a debut to their most expensive signing in Shane Duffy at cenre back.
*** match report: But alas, he was unable to help keep a collective clean sheet as visitors were undone at two set pieces. Seagulls went a goal behind when failing to mark properly at a f-k which was headed past Stockdale - who did get a touch (15min). The first half display was below par and Magpies were exploiting our 4411 shape to control midfield. Just before the interval Baldock was booked for a rash challenge. Just after the break he was sent off for a similar infringement against the keeper (55min). A little past the hour mark United scored direct from a f-k as Stockdale stood still (63min). Hughton then made a triple change as he accepted BHA's fate. Norwood, LuaLua & Hemed came on and Brighton went to 442. Travellers gave as good as they got with ten men stats-wise but were on a hiding to nothing. Hughton said, 'in the second half with more of the ball, we had a chance to get back into the game. Newcastle didn't create lots of chances.' It was a long way to go for Brighton fans and many went home disappointed because in truth, Seagulls could perform better on the long road.
