Season 6 (A) 28/1/17 - FA Cup 4th rnd - L 3-1 ~ Towell.
Imps were clear at top of the National League and had gotten past Ipswich 1-0 at home in a replay after drawing 2-2 away in round 3. Previously they beat Oldham 3-2 (H) in r2 and Altrincham 2-1 (H) in r1. Meanwhile Albion disposed of MK Dons 2-0 at the Amex in r3. Chris Hughton had been fielding his second eleven for both Cup competitions, whether home or away. He now had to decide how much weight to give to this tie, with regard to a possible lucrative draw in the next round. Albion were leading the C'ship div by 2 points and to all intent and purpose, promotion to the Prem was an obvious priority. Most of the squad was available but CH was wary of a full fixture list ongoing into February. In the event he chose to make 9 changes to the last Championship starting eleven - believing this side capable of getting victory at Sincil Bank. It included Fikayo Tomori, making a BHA debut on loan from Chelsea U23 squad.
*** match report: The afternoon turned into a giant killing disaster for Seagulls reserves. Inside half an hour visitors opened the scoring to quieten a patriotic home crowd. A long diagonal from Goldson was headed on by Murray and Towell took his chance on the volley (24min). On turnaround Imps were expected to re-double efforts to stay in the tie and they pressed travellers throughout. From a very long lofted f-k, Maenpaa came to collect but ended on the deck injured when up ended. Murray was booked for holding in the area and Ref pointed to the spot. Ankergren was inserted in lieu as gk but dived the wrong way (57min). Five minutes later Tomori put thru his net at a harmless deep cross as Ankergren rolled on the grass (62min). Hughton responded by putting Murphy & Hemed on with twenty minutes to the ninety. But Albion were already on a hiding to nothing. Five minutes short of ninety Huenemeier presented City with the ball and they again beat Ankergren very easily (85min). Many Brighton fans were leaving the crazy scenes inside the ground out of sheer embarrassment. Hughton said, 'it's a result I couldn't see at half time. Were they a better team than us? No. But they didn't make mistakes to let us score, we did.' In truth too many players didn't fancy the physicality of City's approach and were just hacking at the ball for fear of being caught. Albion quit on the job, there were no leaders out there and paid the price for lacking in mental & pysical strength.
