memorable match: Season5 (H) - the game following loss of life in a display plane cash at Shoreham.

Season5 (H) Championship 12/9/15 - 1-0 ~ Hemed.
On this particular afternoon fans assembled well before kick-off to pay tribute to the 11 men who died in the Shoreham Airshow tragedy in August. Two of whom were close to the club - Matt Grimstone (groundsman) & Jacob Schilt (REmf charity side). Chris Hughton said, 'I thought it was a fitting tribute that the club put on. And our team put in a fitting performance, especially for those two lads.' Hughton selected an unchanged line-up from the previous victory at Ipswich, played prior to the international break. Also ex-BHA boy-done-good Bobby Zamora was fit enough to be on the bench for the first time at home. In summer like conditions a crowd of 24k attended and East stand lower held cards aloft, when the teams came out, spelling the word 'together.'
*** match report: Albion were a goal to the good inside five minutes and like the other 2 home fixtures to date, it eventually finished at one-nil. Initially Stephens effort was blocked but unmarked Hemed made sure from deep in the area (5min). The home eleven were good value for the lead until the break, although missing a couple of straightforward opportunities to add further goals. After the interval Tigers made tactical subs and the ex-Prem outfit took control but did everything except find the net. Stockdale made a couple of important stops and defensively Albion were resolute and professional. Hughton put on Ince to strengthen the rearguard with 25min left and later swapped strikers for Zamora to do hold-up duties. Leading scorer LuaLua was booked again and now it meant an immediate ban. With competition for places, all the squad wanted to make apps in this team heading the table - by the margin of four points no less.
Stats; poss 40-60, on target 3-3, off target 6-6, blocked 5-3, corners 3-6, fouls 15-10, o/s 1-2, yellow cards 3-2.

Oscar Garcia was the man in charge at BHA for Championship fixtures this term and for particular knockout occasions too. He had gotten Albion to verges of play-off positions and was ready to push on with a challenge to enter top-six slots. City were now a Prem outfit and duly came back to the Amex as one of those also-rans in bottom half of that elite league. Surely they were there for taking on the night. Brighton were in a consecutive winning run at home and had notched twice there lately. The squad was settling down again after January transfer and injury issues were resolved, so the 21k attendance on a typical Feb Monday evening under Sky Sport lites was kinda encouraging in these circumstances. If Albion could advance, they would meet Gus Poyet once more when his Sunderland outfit would visit in quarter finals.
*** match report: Seagulls appeared to be heading for victory but were pegged back late in the tie as Hull forced a replay (85min). Travellers had not appeared to be in with a shout until then. Ulloa put Brighton in front on the half hour when racing clear from a Buckley 1-2 and lobbing the keeper. March replaced WB for the second period, while Obika stood in late for our goal scorer. Overall Albion were good value for the lead and upped their game throughout. The pass, pass, pass mantra of Poyet's era was still very much in evidence, making locals look a useful unit indeed. Garcia had made several changes to his starting eleven at the Amex previously but nobody new was found wanting. The alterations were seamless and effectively dealt with supposedly stronger opposition. Brighton conceded possession to Hull but matched them in many other stats. It was not just down to luck on the night.

Season2 (H) Championship 9/2/13 - 1-0 ~ Vicente.
Gus Poyet had done good by anyone's standards in his time at BHA to date. Our second season at Falmer was on par with Championship results last term, although on paper a better squad should currently have produced more points. Gus said,'from now until the end of the season it's only about winning. Are we going to take more risks than before? Probably.' Seagulls were five points adrift of sixth place and four of our next five fixtures were at the Amex. However Albion had merely won two from their last ten outings. Gus continued, 'we need to be the same team we were at the beginning, defending and with the new players and mentality try to win and score more. At the end of the day it's how you defend your box and how clinical you are in the other box. That's the key from now on.' Apart from signing Leonardo Ulloa in January, Matt Upson was an emergency loan deal from Stoke as cover for hamstrung Gordon Greer. So Seagulls squad was finally in place and Gus had no intentions of adding to personnel before May. On a cold evening with light rain, over 25k turned up for a teatime k-o in front of TV cameras.
*** match report: Brighton, using a 4312 formation, bossed the first half but couldn't score. Hull probably shaded the second period, at least on stats, when they completed double our on/off targets. Albion edged it late in the day via a f-k routine from Vicente just outside the area. He drove a low fizzer past El-Abd in the wall and thru the keeper as time ticked toward going home (83min). Gus sent him on just before an hour gone and later bolstered attacking options, introducing Buckley (73min) as David moved into right back. At the death Calderon also took to the field of battle in that position. It was not a brilliant performance but Albion got the win required. Mom went to Bruno as super wingback. Vicente was back after many months out with a thigh injury and rejoined Spanish speaking amigos on the costa del goal. He said, 'there are five of us and Leo from Argentina so we help each other. I feel great here. I want to say thanks to the fans because the atmosphere has been amazing. I think this win will give us confidence and our goal is of course to reach the play-offs.'

Season1 (H) 15/10/11 - 0-0.
Over 18k Brighton fans turned up at the Amex for a five-thirty k-o on a balmy evening after a warm autumn day. The weather at Falmer, in our first season there, had been pretty good to date and helped with all-round build-up to games as crowds arrived. The Amex was posting sold-out notices and bus and train services seemed to cope ok with those many extra thousands compared to Withdean numbers. On the pitch BHA were finding their feet in the Championship following a super summer start. There had been interruption for two international breaks (Mackail-Smith represented Scotland) but this allowed Gus Poyet time to deal with injury niggles and tactical training for our small squad's steep learning curve. Albion were coming off the back of a winless month but there certainly wasn't panic in Seagulls camp. Mauricio Taricco had hung up his boots for the second and last time, raising speculation about future signings to cover first eleven positions.
*** match report: Well, it might go down in stats books as a nil-nil draw but this fixture was far from boring and not many punters left to go home extra early. It was played at 100mph throughout, with no quarter given - although good sportsmanship ruled ok. Each side coulda snatched an early lead and chances came and went in an entertaining first half. City hit the bar twice during a hectic second period and up the other end their goalie made vital saves. CM-S looked sharp following national duties overseas but couldn't notch on the night - such was his luck. Vicente was a class act and when Noone arrived on the left flank for last twenty-five mins, Albion stepped it up via orthodox 442. Gus could see the game was on a knife edge and hoped it would flick our way. However he couldn't be too unhappy with just one point in unpredictable circumstances.

This fixture was moved from the Saturday at end of Jan because it clashed with FAC4 - see FAC3 below! At that time BHA had three games up north in a week. So it was kinda ironical that Albion then had three home matches prior to meeting Tigers again. Which incidentally began three more away fixtures. At this stage Seagulls were fourth and Tigers top, so there was a lot to play for - if not a so-called six pointer. Albion were on another unbeaten run, following a few set backs at very end of 2015 and went into this game needing to prove they could cut the mustard on travels this year if promotion was viable. The squad was stronger, having some new additions and other players returning from injury. There was a blend of experience and younger eagerness that combined to give the match-day eighteen self belief, competitiveness and ambition. All that was required now was a clean sheet and the will to win against top notch opposition.

When the draw was made in mid December, there were plenty of balls in the pot. Slowly they were all picked out until only two remained. Yes, you've guessed right but this time, Albion were last number out and so allocated the visiting dressing room. It was not the tie Brighton fans had hoped for but hey-ho, it might have been Arsenal again! Chris Hughton made changes to the usual league starting eleven, making seven changes, selecting fringe players & reserves from the bench and introducing two debutants - Ridgewell & Towell. Hughton went for three at the back and wingbacks. Then put one up front and a four man midfield in 5221 shape.
*** match report: Well, the scoreline flattered visitors who were well beaten without much of a fight. Tigers were too classy and had a Prem style squad to rotate. It just exposed lack of quality and desire in Albion's support group to make a bid for league action in future. Seagulls were on the back foot and hoping for coffee to revive them when just before the break Ref pointed to the spot (41min). In the second period Hughton withdrew Holla & Calderon around the hour mark and switched to 442. A little later he pulled off Manu but it was same old, same old from hapless visitors. Hughton said, 'we left behind four or five players that had played almost every minute of every game this season. I thought trhat we defended very well. We had two clear cut chances. They had a bit more pace and quality than we did.' Brighton fans were looking at the bigger picture, where Albion had now lost 4 and drawn 3 in the last 7 in league & cup. As bad an ongoing stat as those shown below!

First of all, there was plenty of suggestion that Albion could get a win here and so progress into quarter finals. La Liga super-hero Oscar Garcia was quoted as saying, 'the FA Cup is the most special in the world because you play one off games. The small team has a better chance to beat the big team. It would be fantastic to manage a team at Wembley.' Ok, well hold on a second OC, squad rotation might rest a few from rigours of the Championship but are the rest really good enough at this stage? About 500 diehards and collection of northern exiles duly turned up on a Monday night to see if Oscar's optimism was misplaced.
*** match report: Albion were one behind inside fifteen minutes and two not long before halftime. Travelling opinion was that luck was with locals but in truth OC could admit Seagulls reserves were not up to speed in the opening period. Hull were coasting up north following a header (14min) and a f-k (36min) as Brez struggled to get hands on. During the second half Brighton took their bollocking from Oscar to heart and upped the ante. LuaLua had replaced Spanish Rod and later, March got on for half an hour. Ulloa bagged a goal ten mins afterwards to give visitors hope of an equaliser. But that was all it was - wishful thinking. On stats alone, Albion had not been wiped out and were credible as opponents. But Garcia knew deep down he was way short of where he wanted to be this season, for league, cup or even squad practice match. Sometimes you could only dream on.
Brezovan, Calderon, Dunk, Upson, Ward, Ince (March), Andrews, Forster-Caskey, David (Obika), Ulloa, Rodriguez (LuaLua).
Season2 (A) Championship 18/8/12 - L 1-0.
Albion kicked-off '12/13, for our second Championship campaign based at Falmer, way up in the northeast. Gus Poyet had added keeper Tomasz Kuszczak, wingbacks Wayne Bridge (year loan) and Bruno Salter, plus midfielder Andrew Crofts returned from Prem duty. Vicente was also back after prolonged contract issues in close season but didn't start today. Otherwise apart from fringe players it was same old and at least you could put seven on the bench this time around. Buckley and Hoskins were injured once more, while Sparrow and Vincelot didn't make the eighteen. Brezovan might have been between the posts, although only out with the washing coz Ankergren got no.2. Apparently we were also looking for another striker. On a nice August afternoon, around one thousand BHA support were included in a crowd of nearly 16k.
*** match report: Albion were off the blocks double quick and CMS was into action straight away. It was intended to use him more this term by getting onto the end of things rather than chasing around for nowt. Stats began to rack up and Seagulls were more than keeping heads above water by halftime. Noone had been booked before 30min gone and somehow much later escaped a second yellow, so Gus replaced him (68min). Brighton were turning the screw after the break, keeping possession via good build up and creating chances. However despite CMS clipping the bar, travellers couldn't notch to take a crucial lead. Of course the inevitable happened and Hull snatched a winner against general run of play as the clock ticked toward 4.45pm (85 min). You couldn't make it up and we wuz robbed. Gus didn't over react, taking the view that we'd played well enough to win on a different day. One down (literally) and forty-five to go.

Season1 (A) 22/2/12 - 0-0.
This fixture shifted to Wednesday evening following Brighton's appearance at Anfield in FA Cup5. Unfortunately Albion were beaten out of sight by Liverpool and conceded three own goals to boot. Straight off the back of that humiliating Merseyside defeat, BHA went north again to try and hold it together on Humberside. Both clubs were challenging for play-off places and wanted to stay in touch with big-boy outfits presently occupying top-six positions. To add a little spice to goings on in the Prem and Championship, Gus Poyet had been tapped up by Wolves for their vacant managers post. Gus made four changes to the cup-tie eleven, introducing on-loan m-f prospect Abdul Razak for debut. Brezovan kept the gloves but Dunk was rested and Calderon dropped to the bench. CMS returned up front with orders to run amok on a below average pitch used for rugby matches. On the night 17k attended but there was only 200 odd travelling support and we suspect a fair number were exiles from nearer to Yorkshire rather than far-flung Sussex.
*** match report: Although the contest remained goalless, it was an entertaining game with plenty of box to box action. If we look at stats, Albion had six on&off targets and fifty percent of possession but merely two corners. That meant there was plenty to achieve in open play and Poyet chose his usual 433 going forward, reverting to 451 when retreating. Quite soon after kickoff it was like a cup tie with loadsa end to end kick and rush. Brezovan got into thick of battle but done good and kept a clean sheet, plus help from Bridcutt clearing off the line and also the crossbar doing its bit. Razak did ok too and was replaced by fellow Man City colleague Gai Assulin for the last twenty minutes. Gus previously put Buckley on for half an hour to try and break stranglehold by City's rearguard but to no avail. Hull were a constant danger, although sound BHA defensive tactics and some poor finishing maintained parity for stalemate throughout. Thus Brighton remained unbeaten in 2012 and with status quo continuing, were four points shy of a top-six slot. Gus and thousands listening to radio broadcasts in the southeast heaved a sigh of relief and we all hoped for more bounce-back ability as the p-o chase evolved.
