That over-used phrase, 'must win game' sprang to collective mind of Brighton fans as they perused the PL table in build up to this 14th home fixture, with the all important run-in just around our next corner. It had been nearly a month since devoted had assembled at the community stadium for a Prem home match, although current domestic FA Cup fever gave some respite to drop zone worries. That apart, Albion had not won a PL fixture at the Amex since very end of 2018 and there had never been a better time or opportunity to reverse this ongoing goals & points dought. Otherwise 'freefall' would be the word emerging from fed up supporters lips.
*** match report: Albion ground out victory with a late winner as visitors were under increasing pressure to hold out for a goalless draw. The first half was forgettable, bar a Jahanbakhsh effort rebounding off the crossbar and Murray being booked just before the interval for an elbow. But the second period was a tad more entertaining as the crowd got behind Seagulls attempts to open the scoring. Andone replaced Murray (55min) and later Izquierdo came on for Jahanbakhsh (77min). He was fouled with his first touch but Bernardo took the quick f-k back to him and he duly squared short to Knockaert. His cross was met by Andone with a great header under the bar (79min). The Amex erupted in celebration and pure relief. Hughton said, 'it feels like a big win. There were nerves and apprehension. The level of performance hasn't been so bad. It was a lively half-time team talk. The players have had a big fright and I hope they can go and finish the job of survival now. This league is really tough.' Brighton fans went home happy, knowing teams below had lost and a 5pt gap reopened to the drop zone.

Season7 1st Premier League (H) 7/4/18 - 1-1 ~ og.
A home win in this contest, involving two of the promoted sides, would help Albion to stay up. The run in had six further games left to play overall and the last four were against top eight teams. Results here versus clubs in the bottom half of the table were: West Brom 3-1, Newcastle 1-0, Southampton 1-1, Stoke 2-2, Palace 0-0, West Ham 3-1 & Swansea 4-1. So far, so good but there was little room for complacency because every single goal in each match got to count in the great scheme of all things PL, one way or the other.
Albion don't do mediocre, in the sense of occupying a safe berth in middle of the table. For all those Falmer years and very often at Withdean too, they were either chasing play-offs or auto promo or otherwise risking the drop. Now the latter was again a distinct threat left in waiting, given the tough final run-in fixtures.
*** match report: Hosts blew the chance to get three points and finished this dire contest with ten men, holding on for a point they started with anyway. Seagulls took the lead when March let fly following useful build up and the keeper put it in the net (29min). But within five mins they'd lost the initiative when Duffy's back pass to Ryan presented the equaliser to Town (33min). After this flurry BHA's display sank without a trace. Duffy was booked prior to the hour mark and then Ulloa replaced Murray. Halfway thru the second period Propper got a straight red for studs up (74min). Kayal immediately came on for Gross with a corresponding re-shape to 441. Little more happened bar the shouting of frustrated fans. Hughton said, 'it's still the same group of teams with six games to go for us. Somebody is going to pull out some surprising results which you don't expect. We have to look at it that we need points to stay up.' Brighton fans knew the next match was against Palace at their place a week hence. So plenty of time to do the maths.

It was a Tuesday night immediately following an initial defeat at home this season on the Saturday beforehand. Opposition came here as league leaders so there was no better time to see if all the expectation for a promotion push had now gone down the tubes. During August, Albion were in the top two until losing away at title favourites Newcastle. Brighton fans wondered if Chris Hughton would make changes to the starting eleven in light of this dip in form. The transfer window would not open again until end of the year, so was the squad strong enough to compete in the top six? On the night Hughton elected to swap from 442 to 4411 and so left Murray & Norwood on the bench. 24k attended on one of the warmest September evenings Brighton fans could remember since the brown ball & boots era.
*** match report: Albion squeezed past the top team with a fortunate winner ten minutes from time. The first half was goalless although both teams had chances in a finely balanced contest. Hughton withdrew Hemed for Murray a little after an hour, persisting with the no.10 role via Murphy. But it was Knockaert, now coming across from right flank, who drove a low ball from the left at the keeper. The hapless custodian got down but spilled it into the net (80min). Hughton immediately put on Sidwell and went to 433 to have & hold for closing moments, withdrawing his goalscorer at the death for enigmatic Manu. Seagulls retained a clean sheet and Brighton fans went home happy, feeling lady luck had favoured us and things were back on track afterall. Hughton said, 'you can't do well if you don't have enough character in the team. We've been a little bit hit & miss with our form but hopefully today can push us forward.'

Season5 (H) 23/1/16 - 2-1 ~ Zamora, Wilson.
Believe it or not, Albion had lost their last three home matches, conceding five goals and scoring none in triple defeats that dropped them out of the top two. So writing was on the Amex dressing-room wall to turns things around pdq. Seagulls had stopped the rot that set in just before Xmas, with victory in their last away fixture. But that previous poor run of form had gotten them perilously close to sliding out of the top six. So with this contest being the first of three successive home games, there was never a better time to try and regain an auto promo slot. Chris Hughton had most of the match day squad fit and the bench looked strong, now some long-term injuries had been overcome. 25k attended to see a regular side selected, with addition of debutant Knockaert.
*** match report: Albion competed against useful opposition but eased past Town with yet another result of one goal difference, which typified this season so far. Brighton finally broke the goal drought in unusual fashion at the Amex - with a counter attack. Kayal carried the ball forward before passing to Knockaert and his centre was swept in by Zamora on the volley (30min). But just prior to the interval Seagulls switched off and Town restored parity from a simple cross & header (45+min). At start of the second period Crofts replaced injured Stephens. Around the hour mark Zamora gave way to Wilson, who merely took a few minutes to get up to speed. He soon headed the winner from another Knockaert assist - man of the match (66min). In the meantime fit again LuaLua came on for Hemed and ran amok. He was going thru on the burst when brought down and Ref sent off the Terrier for a second bookable (84min). Any threat visitors still carried to equalise again thus petered out. Hughton said, 'we knew the game would open up and then it's the teamthat can show that little bit of quality. We didn't have as many chances as I would like but two goals are much needed.' So in the event Albion fans went home happy - for the first time this year.

In all the years Brighton fans had been following the club since that vital homecoming in 1999, thru those up & down Withdean years and during this period at Falmer, it was never a dull moment! It seemed Albion were either very good or frustratingly bad - seeking promotion or evading relegation but hardly ever mediocre in mid division. Once again fans were looking at the table and doing mental arithmetic - coming up with an answer that this fixture was a must win game. Three straight losses, with two at the Amex, had blighted the run-in and for reaching a safety target of fifty points. Chris Hughton was desperate to field a team with somebody capable of scoring goals. His defensive, if not cautious tactics were being undermined if Seagulls did not keep a clean sheet because finding the net up the other end was virtually impossible lately. Strikers CMS & O'Grady had 1league goal each, while Best had none. Winger LuaLua got 3 and convert Calderon 4, although on-loan Teixeira did ok with 6. Even Dunk had 5 but in recent matches, nobody seemed capable of notching. What could Hughton and his coaches do?
*** match report: Well let's take the positives. Albion avoided defeat, got a point and kept a clean sheet. But for all majority of possession and pressing opposition, Seagulls did not register one shot on target. Consequently there were no goals scored once again. The starting eleven was the same that previously held table-toppers for 70minutes, although there was just not the same passion in play on this dull occasion. Visitors were happy to sit back and defend deep and with space slightly cramped, blue & white attacks dried up around the area. After an hours stalemate, Hughton withdrew struggling winger Carayol for LuaLua but in the last half hour it seemed to make little difference. Next up was CMS for Best in an attempt to run channels. Fifteen minutes from the end Teixeira stayed down at a foul and was carried off with a broken leg. Then Town might have won it as they came out to play for the last ten minutes but merely hit both posts. It was a disappointing end to another game there for taking if only Brighton could score. At least the beer didn't dry up on tap in the concourses.

Do you remember some of those horrendous afternoons weatherwise at Withdean? Well, it came back to haunt at the Amex in a full blown southwesterly rainstorm. Gone were those days of a boggy pitch with puddles increasing alongside the all-weather running track. These days a pristine surface soaked up water like a sponge and remained green throughout. Brighton fans were in wet-weather gear like the good old days and needed it coz wind was driving constant gusts of precipitation into stands facing inclement conditions. The gate was supposedly 27k, although several patches of blue seating appeared as blotches in the damp west stand prior to kick-off. All good fun of course and dripping fans could saunter off onto the concourse well before halftime and partake of hot food and beverages as befits a very modern donut stadium.
*** match report: The match wasn't exactly a washout but there were no goals scored to report a win or loss. It was not for want of trying though; possession was nearly two thirds in favour of BHA and there were 2/10 on/offs & 2 blocks. Oscar Garcia said, 'the only thing we didn't do was score. We could have played for two more hours and not scored.' Barnes led the line again, while Ulloa got a short run out as sub on his return from injury. Chances came and went but Ash just couldn't put one of them away. OG introduced LuaLua after the hour mark to inject pace and direct attacking methods. But the masterplan faltered and even the big Argentine couldn't add to the performance with super-sub honours. The match did offer a useful standard of lev2 football but many fans thought the net would bulge any moment and when it didn't, all they could think about was snow at Xmas. One of these two possibilities was offered at very long odds indeed!!

March had arrived but prolonged grey skies hungover from February and it remained cold at Falmer. However another 25k crowd assembled inside the Amex to see if Albion could extend a winning run and cement our rightful place in play-off positions. Gus Poyet had most of his squad available for selection, except Bridcutt suspended, Crofts injured and Hoskins recovering from surgery. He opted for some Prem style rotation where both classy Vicente and Bridge were rested although Greer remained on the bench with Dunk. On paper BHA had a better chance of achieving top-six this term but this month would be crucial to our second tough campaign in the Championship.
*** match report: Leo Ulloa was playing in his seventh match for Seagulls since signing for 2 mill from Almeria and made history by notching the first hat-trick in the community stadium. The Cyclone's first goal was a snap header from an Orlandi cross after Albion began to put some impressive moves together (20 min). But Town hit back just before h-t when our defence failed to mark men in a crowded area (42min). Gus subbed for proven pair Barnes and CMS during a second half period when visitors made a fight of it. Then LU nodded home a deep corner by David (76min) and chased down Town's error at the back to round the keeper (78min). David completed the rout via a spot kick when CMS got bundled over (81min). Late in the day Ulloa came off to mass celebrations for his MoM display. Gus said, 'his second goal especially showed his quality. He has timing and power.'

Almost a full year after visiting Town for our inaugral PL football campaigns, rather than fare at levels 2 or 3, the current BHA match-day squad again arrived there. And once more December would be a critical month for results, with 7 fixtures right up to the halfway stage completion after Xmas. Seagulls hadn't got a good record against Terriers in recent years and away form to date was cause for concern. Despite tactics built on solid defence, Albion found it hard to keep a clean sheet. Subsequently scoring a goal up the other end usually had more significance toward avoiding defeat than taking a point. On the day Chris Hughton made changes to the line-up, introducing Florin Andone for starting debut.
*** match report: Albion were a goal down after 58 seconds. Bruno sliced his clearance back into the six yard box, Ryan & two defenders got in a heap and a Town player headed home (1min). They were in control of the game until Ref red carded hosts striker for studs up on Bissouma (32 min). Seagulls huffed & puffed but equalised on h-t when Duffy nodded in on the run from a cross by March, after a quick corner taken by Bruno (45+min). During the second period visitors went looking for a second score but again time ticked away while they pushed on. March provided another assist, for Andone to open his account with a glancing header (69min). The striker next came off with Bruno as BHA inserted fresh legs on a heavy pitch. Hughton said, 'we've certainly had better starts but our response was good. It was a classic no.9's goal. I'm really pleased for him (Andone) because he's had to wait for his chance.' Albion won coming from behind which was rare to say least - but the 3rd match on the bounce where a sending off influenced ongoing events. Brighton fans would take the result but were under no illusions as to true state of affairs on the road, although the win here was long overdue, fortunate or otherwise.

Season7 1st Premier League (A) 9/12/17 - L 2-0
The Prem table was beginning to take shape and the three ex-Championship clubs were all in the mix of 10 bottom half teams. Eight points covered nine sides from BHA on 17pt in 12th, right down to 20th bottom place. None of the previously three promoted outfits were stuck in the drop zone but every clean sheet, goal scored and point gained would go a long way to ensuring survival come next May. Home form was key to building a platform to reach a 40pt target but points obtained on the road were also precious. Seagulls knew Town of old from many a level2 contest, although this clash had a whole new meaning in terms of what the future may hold for both outfits. On the day Chris Hughton rotated some of the 18 man squad.
*** match report: It ended in defeat and an inept display by Seagulls. Hughton started without recognised wingers and surrendered initiative to the home team who pressed visitors back. Dunk lost his man at a corner and BHA went one down - for several games running now (12 min). Just prior to the interval Brighton were undone once more from a set piece when a tame header squirmed under Ryan (43 min). From beginning of the second period March was introduced and around the hour mark Izquierdo also arrived but it made little difference to poor away team stats. Hemed turned up as well as Albion just went thru the motions. Prem managers had worked out how to beat us and Seagulls looked like a one trick pony with very little more to offer. Hughton said, 'there wasn't a player who stood out and had that good a game. We never gave ourselves a chance.' Brighton appeared jaded, lacking in ideas and not up for the fight. Lack of goals scored in open play now stretched to four fixtures and three of the last four had been losses. Some previous good fortune enabled BHA to reach a point per game average but we couldn't rely on that ongoing. It was time to step up and get positive results or face dropping into the bottom three by Xmas.

This fixture was moved to a Thursday evening due to yet more tv coverage in the season ongoing. Albion went north into Yorkshire a few days after being knocked out of the FA Cup at non-league Lincoln City on a January Saturday afternoon of humiliation, embarrassment and sub standard performances from Seagulls reserves. Meanwhile Town had cruised past Rochdale over the Pennines. But at least BHA were spared a fixture backlog in Feb/March because of possible clash with dates. Chris Hughton had learnt a lot from failure of the squad as a whole. Many positions he previously considered well covered were perhaps now under review once the illusion got shattered in the Fens. Nevertheless Seagulls visited here as table-toppers and possessed a useful away record to boot despite a bad result, two weeks prior to the Cup debacle, at Preston. In recent years at Championship level Seagulls had got a point here but this term Town were a constant top six outfit and a much different proposition to previously.
*** match report: Albion crashed to their heaviest defeat of the campaign to date and Dunk was sent off to make it a night to forget. Town outclassed Seagulls throughout and had it won by halftime. They opened the scoring inside ten minutes and never looked back (9min). Hemed grabbed a leveller when picking up a bad back pass but parity didn't last long (20min). Terriers were on top again approaching the break (36min). They rubbed it in during stoppage as Albion fell apart across the pitch (45+). Hughton put Sidwell on for the second period but Dunk received marching orders for a 2nd bookable after the hour mark (67min). A peep at the stats tells you how bad a display BHA had in this one sided contest. Hughton said, 'there were periods we needed to dig deep and make sure that scoreline wasn't even bigger. They didn't do anything different to what we know they do. You've got to be able to deal with it better.' As shocked Brighton fans made for exits asap, Hughton had words with the team. He said, 'there isn't one of them who isn't aware of what I think and how poor that performance was.'

Season5 (A) 18/8/15 - 1-1 ~ Kayal.
Midway thru August and Albion had racked up three wins on the bounce already - 2 in the league and 1 in the cup. Hopefully this campaign would be much better than previously. Manager Chris Hughton had kept Seagulls above the drop last term after taking over from Sami Hyypia at New Year. Most of the side that played here under Sami were still available for selection but Chris was building a new team now. Beram Kayal came in before end of 14/15 and March, Stephens & Baldock had returned from long injuries. Also in pre-season and opening week he had signed Bobby Zamora, Uwe Hunemeir, Jamie Murphy, Gaetan Bong, Tomer Hemed, Liam Rosenior and keeper Niki Maenpaa to bolster a thin squad. On the night nearly 500 away fans travelled to see if the victory run could be extended.
*** match report: Kayal notched his first goal of this Championship season inside a minute, as Albion threatened to run riot. But Gods of Football had seen enough and it grew progressively harder to turn approach play into chances, into more goals. The killer touch seemed to elude Seagulls who were top of the table but needed extra rub of the green. Town came out for the second period with a different attitude and equalised quickly. Stockdale was beaten on his near post when the defence was caught cold to an angled strike (54min). Hughton withdrew Hemed around the hour mark, putting Ince on to sit in front of the back four. While visitors defended for their lives, Baldock was taken off for O'Grady with fifteen minutes to go. March was next to leave and Murphy made his debut with ten minutes left. He linked well with O'Grady as they'd both been with Sheff Utd and Albion finished strongly. But a draw was probably ok and stats showed up to be about equal too. Hughton said, 'overall it was a fair result. We didn't keep the ball as well as we had done. When the spaces opened up we needed to have a little bit more control.' If this team could learn to dominate games and score goals then the rest of the season appeared to be on the up from a good start.

Season4 (A) 21/10/14 - 1-1 ~ Dunk.
It had been merely six months since returning to West Yorkshire for another campaign but look how different Albion were this time. Oscar Garcia had quit immediately following p-o s-f humiliation and new coach Sami Hyypia was finding it very hard to get wins from his vastly changed squad. Bruno, Stephens & CMS were all injured but many of the old eleven had previously dispersed to other pastures. Seagulls were now without a victory in eight going into this fixture and just a point above the drop zone to boot. Brighton fans were hanging in there, trying to give time & credence to Hyypia's methods, which used wingbacks and m-f closely supporting three up front. The problem was, strikers has been unable to find the net and latterly, Greer & Dunk were actually ones getting on score sheets.
*** match report: Despite an encouraging opening, ten minutes into the fixture Albion conceded and were yet again chasing a game. Town played thru visitors and fired in off the bar - going ahead a little too easily (10mins). During rest of the half Seagulls took play to Terriers but failed to create enough chances in open play to count. Then shortly before h-t, Dunk converted at a corner, for BHA to be level at the break (39min). In the second period Hyypia made a double sub with a little under twenty minutes remaining. The home side put more pressure on in a bid to win it themselves but in truth, travellers were always in with a shout of edging the match, although both teams recorded limited stats for on/offs, corners, o/s etc. LuaLua had played well and picked up a yellow card for dissent on the way. Deep into stoppage time, Ref sent him off for two bookables after a late 'serious' foul. Hyypia said, 'you have phases where you need 100% concentration - at the beginning of a game, either side of half time and at the end. After every goal scored you have to get concentration back as well. We have talked about it and hopefully we will get it together.' It made perfect sense to Brighton fans, so we really hoped it would to our favourites too in the very near future. Otherwise we could be sucked into a relegation dog fight during another hard season, concentrated over six months of winter.

Season3 (A) 19/4/14 - 1-1 ~ Bruno.
The season was reaching climax and both sides were looking for max points from this fixture. Victory would put Town on the way to 50pts, while Albion needed all three to gain a play-off place. A head of steam was building for Seagulls during the run-in and good form on the road had made up for lack of results at the Amex. Oscar Garcia was selecting a settled side, although he liked to use the match-day squad to suit and there were capable regulars on the bench. With a little luck OG could reach hero status in his first year and put the Gus Poyet bogey to bed.
*** match report: Town opened up with both barrels and Albion went behind at a direct f-k (6min). Brighton seemed a shadow of former selves, especially coming here from a great win at promoted Leicester. In the second period Garcia introduced CMS after the hour mark when BHA were chasing the game. TK made three blocks/stops/saves to keep visitors in it during a tense spell before coming on strong for final moments. Time was running out when Bruno got forward and was on the end of a free ball to slot home (83min). Nathan Jones said, 'the lads showed good character and a lot of desire second half. We came out and really tried to in the game.' on stats Albion had two thirds possession but were inferior in shots on/off target. Only teams in the bottom six had scored fewer goals this term so far and time was ticking down. But other results went our way and a p-o place was gained at a vital moment.

Season2 (A) 17/11/12 - w 1-2 ~ Buckley 2.
Gus Poyet knew all about Town (well in fairness he had plenty of info on all Championship opponents too) due to recent shared experiences in League One when Albion was based at Withdean. Now both sides were vying for p-o positions at tier-two and Terriers were currently just above the cut-off line, while Seagulls needed to fly higher. A run of mediocre results didn't truly reflect BHA form and Gus was unhappy with conceding three goals at Wolves last week. He said, 'we created 15 chances against 10 men. If we didn't do that then I would probably be resigning.' Poyet moulded his squad to the successful Spanish style and we had better players than previously but somehow, couldn't raise our game to beat competitors. This division was a useful standard and no one club would roll over and surrender points without a battle. We had to tough it out and over forty-six fixtures, trust quality would tell in the end. On the day GP was forced into making changes in the regular line-up due to injury.
*** match report: Albion notched one early and Buckley was the hero. Albion took a corner quickly and Will did the biz decisively (5min). Brighton had much the best of a positive first half and played some good stuff in attack. Buckley then doubled the lead before the break when weaving thru and netting firmly (40m). Town came at visitors during the second period and deputy keeper Brezovan got tested as a weak link. He fumbled a few and was responsible for gifting the lacklustre home unit a very late goal (90m). Gus put on Dicker (61m) for cover and also Hoskins to hold the ball up (67m) while Brighton backpedaled. Late sub Calderon replaced first-game selection Painter in order to keep sound in defence (75m). Apparently Gus thought Bucka was worth 10mill so the winger said, 'I am in the form of my life. I am the fittest and strongest I have ever felt and the goals are going in.' Gus said, 'there was a little bit of relief at the end because they threw everything at us.' It was a great result thanks to er, Will power - boom, boom.
