This Carling Cup knockout tie was the first match to be played under floodlights at our super new American Express Community Stadium. Over 16000 turned up, with over 1300 in the away end. We had played Gillingham in the LCr1 during Aug 1999 at Withdean, also for the initial evening game. That was the year of our homecoming after spending two seasons at Priestfield as div3 tenants to the then very useful div2 outfit. How times change - Albion were now newly promoted to the Championship, whilst Gills resided in League2. We'd waited twelve years to get here and intended to savour significance of this moment. It was a gutter to the stars story.
*** match report: For entertainment value the tie was actually quite drab, although Brighton fans kept up a level of support only dreamed about previously at the theatre of trees. Gus Poyet selected from his small 1st 11 squad and gave full debuts to Vincelot and Buckley. He employed a 4123 shape like before in League1 when Seagulls flew high. Wingers Noone and Buckley were high up vast expanses of the huge Amex pitch to assist lone striker Barnes. But it was all huff and puff until half time and visitors mighta snatched an early lead but for Greer clearing off the line. Well past the hour mark, with B'ton ahead only on stats, Ref gave us a soft penalty when Buckley got brought down on the burst. Barnes did the do (67min) and BHA pushed up to get into the hat for round2. Gills laterly put the boot in and Ankergren and Painter were booked from a lengthy melee after Vincelot got chopped. Seven visitors were yellow carded but that gave plenty of extra things for home fans to shout about.
Ankergren, Calderon, Greer, Dunk, Painter, Bridcutt, Vincelot, Dicker, Noone, Buckley, Barnes.
