FOREST GREEN - away, Falmer Years:
'22 EFL Cup . . . no league visits from 2011.
Season12 (A) EFL Cup R2 Wed 24/8/22 - w 0-3 ~ Undav, Alzate, Ferguson.
This newly promoted League One outfit was drawn to host Albion in the League Cup second round, when Prem clubs join R1 winners of the early-season evening competition. It was our very first visit to New Lawn, located in rural depths of Glos. Brighton fans would have to scroll back to the mid noughties at Withdean to record our only previous meeting, with its very own variety of autumnal open-air lower leagues knockout entertainment at the theatre of trees. As usual when facing lesser opposition Graham Potter was anticipated to field a second-string line-up of squad players and U21s. Such had been made similar decisions for LC ties away at Cardiff, Preston & Bristol Rovers from recent past annual midweek summer excursions during our latest Prem campaigns. FG Rovers had got past L2 leaders Orient 2-0 at home in R1, so were expected to put a fight anyhow. A week before this tie New Lawn was waterlogged - another factor to be included in the mix.
*** match report: Albion second squad went thru to meet Arsenal in R3, scoring three times and keeping a clean sheet to boot. Undav on debut netted first (38min), then Alzate with a smart punt just prior to the interval (45min). Rovers put on 5 subs and attacked in the second period as Seagulls reshuffled to cope. But Steele kept them at bay and Potter introduced U21 subs to see the tie out. At the death Ferguson bagged a very late goal to flatter the away outfit. All in all a job well done on the night with new players on show as well as useful displays from PL2 regulars. Potter said, 'we didn't do so well in the second half but you have to give the opponent credit. We stuck at it and went about the game the right way.' He was right as usual but is an all-round coach with wider team selection and forward thinking. So good work by GP too.
