This January '25 fixture was the 11th of 19 at home, coming in mid season (Q2-3). The reverse game was 17 Aug '24 to kick-start the campaign (Q1) - see away scroll further below. Season13, 7th Premier League (H) Sat 24/2/24 - D 1-1 ~ Dunk
It was mid-season and so far so good for Brighton fans. Thus far visitors habitual away record was - W5 D2 L5 F13 A18. Our Prem record at the Amex versus Toffees was; dww dll - in six seasons to date. The latest three meetings hadn't exactly gone the way we wished - and last year was a disaster of biblical proportions. We also recently lacked consistency of scoring winning goals regularly, tho home form was pretty darn good this term. At the moment Brighton were 7th, while Everton were 17th from 25 league games played. During November the Merseyside club were deducted 10pts for breaking PL rules, putting them in danger of the drop zone. In the January transfer window no big business was done by Prem clubs. Toffees had actually changed managers 5 times during our seven Prem years, latterly in a bid to stay there. Based on previous meetings Brighton were looking for merely a third win entertaining Everton.
*** match report: that anticipated win was almost another loss against a bogey side at the Amex. The first half was goalless but Brighton were guilty of missing chances to establish a winning lead. Around the hour mark De Zerbi inserted a triple sub in a bid to break deadlock. The game ground on at nil-nil with visitors hanging in there for a point. Then at a set piece into the BHA box they smashed in a punt (73mins). A little later Gilmour was sent off for high follow thru (81mins) and Seagulls were reduced to ten men and still a goal behind after failing to score to boot. Deep into stoppage time Dunk rose to a Gross cross and nodded the leveller (95mins). De Zerbi thought it was what we deserved at least but our inconsistency in front of goal was evident once more versus supposedly lesser opposition. Brighton fans know the on-field squad won't net multiple times each week, however keeping a clean sheet allows only one to win it. Teams at the top have large positive goal differences, while those of middle rank like Albion tend to register much less than +10 and often nearer 0 or even into negative figures. This term a mix of players are scoring but we haven't found the net regularly enough to cancel out or exceed opponents scores. But that's the Prem and no team is gonna roll over and go belly up without a fight. In the case of Everton doubly so. Footnote: on the following Monday the PL reduced Everton's points deduction to 6pts from 10pts.

Season12, 6th Premier League (H) Mon 8/5/23 - L 1-5 ~ Mac Allister
This match was moved back to Bank Holiday Monday from the previous regular Saturday slot due to run-in fixture rearrangements during the King's Coronation weekend. Last term's reversal here in Aug '21 was a one off... wasn't it? Back in Oct '17 we'd been grateful to begin a good run of home results, via a draw, across four formative campaigns against an original Prem side who'd never been relegated (see scroll below). We'd first won in Dec '18 then again in Oct '19 before another Amex draw in Apr '21 against Toffees (seasons 7-11). In order to kick on we had to aspire to their once assumed big-club mentality and believe opposition saw us as a tough nut to crack on home turf. Graham Potter had assembled a group which made the top ten at end of his third year as coach. Now under Roberto de Zerbi it was to be seen if there was enough all round quality to maintain progress into the top six or seven. At the mo Albion were in the group chasing Europe, while Toffees were stuck in the drop zone. Today was a very big match for both clubs, following a reversal of fortunes across our previous Prem campaigns.
*** match report: after the Coronation came the dethroning, as Albion got decked in revolutionary fashion by rampant Toffees. A goal down inside the first minute, it was all up hill afterwards for hapless Seagulls. Three behind by halftime and the game was up already (1,29,35mins). De Zerbi made four changes at the intermission and things slightly improved up to the hour mark. But all went pear shaped again as pink-shirted visitors then enjoyed a four goal lead (76mins). Mac A got a consolation, although Albion were well beat at the time (79mins). At the death Everton scored a fifth to make it a miserable evening for home support in the rain (96mins). There was no hiding the result and a very poor display from locals that lacked the power, determination and goal-scoring capabilities of a free-flowing counter-attacking away outfit. RdZ said we lacked the right mentality and blamed our hectic schedule. Brighton fans could see we were an in & out team, short on squad depth and relying on regulars to deliver each and every time on the pitch. In the real world, clubs that achieve do so with a group you can rotate and who step up to any occasion - whether that be in a dogfight or against a side on the front foot. Brighton have a lot to learn still about what is required in the Prem. And it's also a steep learning curve for De Zerbi as well. He is pushing boundaries but maybe bit off more than we could chew during this intense run-in period during fixture-congested May. Albion had games in hand but in truth other top-seven clubs already had points in the bag - and that's what counts at end of it all.

Majority of Brighton fans returned to the Amex a week after our first visit there for about eighteen months thru various pandemic lockdowns. We'd achieved half decent outcomes at the Amex over four consecutive hostings previously - no defeats to date. Albion was now tasked with extending that hard-earned run into five unbeaten versus ever-present Prem northern raiders, visiting for just our second home match this term. They now had another manager installed but one we'd also met regularly before here and knew well.
During the close season, White (50m), Jahanbakhsh (5m), Ryan, Propper, Bernardo, Izquierdo and Gyokeres had left. Andone went on loan in Spain and Tau penned permanently in Egypt. New signings were Enock Mwpeu (20m) in m-f and Kjell Scherpen (4m) between the posts. Toffees chewed over who to add to their re-jigged mid-table squad but didn't spend that much dosh at all. Rafa Benitez was expected to hit the ground running and take the Merseyside club forward into Europe sooner rather than later. Time and Merseyside rip tides would tell. Meanwhile Seagulls were anticipated to takeoff and head for mid table and not fall lower on the long flight towards landing next May.
*** match report: Albion came up short on the day and hardly looked like they'd progressed from last term. The first half appeared to remain goalless going into the break but suddenly our defence backed off and a solo run went thru us like a knife (41min). Potter reshuffled on turnaround but it further went pear-shape when sub Veltman cost us a cheap pen (58min). It was all over bar the Amex shouting, which became more subdued as disappointed home support drifted off toward exits. Potter said; 'i didn't think we were bad, we just weren't good.' His usual in-play tinkering with subs, shape & positioning all came to nought. We were beaten by a better side and quite a few of our squad were not up to speed. In reality we didn't lay a glove on them. At end of the day it's about scoring goals... a Prem problem at BHA. Once the clean sheet got busted there was only gonna be one result.

This fixture was resheduled as the Monday evening elite match (in an empty stadium due to coronavirus protocols) covered by pay tv cameras. Entertaining teams with the status of our current northwest visitors had become commomplace over three previous Prem seasons. Albion's ambitions to move up the table and therefore aspire to be among equals, required getting results from these contests in order to turn dreams into reality. Our record here against Toffees was positve, albeit of close encounters, especially that third kind when something of a fluke - see season9 below. The current situation however appeared less than appropriate for developing desires. Home form pre-kickoff was: lld ddl dld dwd llw. So on the face of it, another win was now necessary for respectable domestic numbers to apply at end of the run-in by mid May. This term's continued absence of crowds had affected H & A results to an extent that many managers considered there was no home advantage prior to kickoff. And some strange scores reflected that trend throughout the Prem. Albion mostly appeared to be on the wrong side of fine lines, although these stats couldn't predict what might happen today. As usual it was a case of scoring more than conceding to obtain three points.
*** match report: In the event it finished as a no score draw, although Albion were satisfied with receiving that single point to push on 7pts clear of the d-z and gain a place to boot via superior goal difference. See stats below for break down of play - it shows yet another case of flattering to deceive in front of goal this term. In truth both outfits had chances to win the game but each failed to hit the net. BHA took positives from recording a 10th clean sheet, by comparison this was balanced in registering a 9th fail to score. Hosts went for the win but were pretty much off target, while visitors sat back and tried to snatch it on the counter. It wasn't exactly a snore draw, more of an ever so slight bore. Seagulls were left groping towards where they needed to be come late May, which was ahead of other relegation candidates. It's never over until it is but so far so good. Not much more to say bar let's get it done sooner rather than later and relax a bit. Potter could then try a mix & match eleven from various squad members he sees as part of next season's campaign. Perhaps in this way work in progress would become a means to consolidate as a mid-table club free from constant fears of relegation.

Season9, 3rd Premier League (H) Sat 26/10/19 - W 3-2 ~ Gross, Maupay, og.
This fixture registered completion of the first quarter (Q1), to record start of our third Prem campaign but so far results were a tad mixed to say least. Albion had already entertained Spurs and visited Man City & Chelsea, representing a quarter of so-called big-six games now done. Those previously accumulated three points accounted for a third of our total to date, which merely averaged 1.00pt/gm overall prior to kickoff. So earning points from bulk of teams around us was immediately required to rebalance the equation and put Seagulls on track for a minimum target 20pt by end of the year. Graham Potter had most of the squad fit and available, so was expected to field a strong side. Just who were to be selected was open to conjecture because for one reason or another, he had not chosen the same starting eleven for two successive matches as yet this term. Thus it suggested GP might still not know which optimum team or shape to put out on any given day. Fans knew he wanted more possession, forward passing and expansive play than previously in the elite but at what cost? The bottom line appeared to be position = points, where p = goals scored.
* * * match report: Brighton fans have watched hundreds of matches down decades of seasons and some go according to script, while others hang in balance. Every so often there is a game with an unpredictable moment or two that allows fickle finger of fate to point. A goal scored by opposition deep into stoppage but in their own net gave Albion all three points (94min). Earlier, VAR granted Seagulls a way back into a contest they were losing, when informing Ref that a penalty should be awarded to hosts. Connolly had been fouled from behind so Maupay stepped up to equalise (80min). From the get go locals faced visitors press but went ahead from a set piece. Gross slammed a f-k over the wall to beat the keeper (15min). But moments later travellers netted from a corner, the ball diverting off Webster (20min). After turnaround Albion had a goal ruled out for offside then Toffees went ahead via their subs run (74min). Potter had changed shape to 343 and introduced subs but needed a break to rescue a point. Next, VAR gave him that opportunity - you couldn't make it up. Potter said, 'we're still going to get harsh refereeing decisions because ultimately it's someones opinion and part of the game.' Brighton fans went home wet but happy, reflecting on how lady luck decided to grant us rub of the green twice and bestow our first ever winning Prem goal in time added on. If you watch enough football it was gonna happen one day... and did, today.

Season8 2nd Premier League (H) Sat 29/12/18 - 1-0 ~ Locadia.
This was the first reciprocal PL fixture, marking start of 2nd half of the campaign (Q3-4). And also that one bizarrely squashed between Boxing Day (Q2) & New Year contests (Q3). Albion had visited Toffees during early November to begin Q2 stats (see Away below). So we already knew the proverbial score, at least metaphorically, if not yet factually & arithmetically. Home form was important this term as last and so far BHA had done ok against bigger outfits in the current top ten - 6th Man Utd 3-2, 2nd Spurs 1-2, 10th Wolves 1-0, 7th Leicester 1-1, 4th Chelsea 0-2 & 5th Arsenal 1-1. Now Chris Hughton had to find a way to get the next win against another regular Prem outfit.
* * * match report: Albion ground out a one-nil victory, which hung in balance throughout the 90+ minutes. Fans were entertained on this Saturday afternoon with an open game that had plenty of incidents on & off the ball and good & bad feelings to boot. The first half was goalless with both sides getting chances but failing to take them. Button made his PL debut in goal and had a slice of luck around the half hour mark when the ball got loose. In the second period Seagulls pressed forwards with vigour. From a Gross corner the ball got to Locadia who netted with aplomb. Lino flagged but Ref consulted and gave the goal (59min). Straight away Toffees struck a shot and Button parried onto a post to keep it clean. Hughton put Murray into the fray with 15 mins to go as BHA hung on to the slender lead. Very late in the day visitors hit the bar from a header via a f-k but hosts saw it out, much to Button's relief. Hughton said, 'generally we start well at home. That lifted the crowd and team's confidence. We had good enough passages in the game to warrant the win.' Hughton had soon been four years in the job and said, 'I've had great support from this club. We'll need to continue to get results and I'm hoping we can continue to make progress.' Brighton fans went home happy enough and probably there was an air of optimism going into the New Year and looking beyond until May.

Season7 1st Premier League (H) Sunday 15/10/17 - 1-1 ~ Knockaert.
October contained five Sundays this year and on three of them Albion were playing a Prem fixture. This was the second match on the Sabbath but a first game at the Amex and followed the international break. In particular the contest had added ingredients for a home six-pointer, against a side level on points (7pt) in the bottom seven (14th & 16th), separated merely by GD (-4 & -8). The club wanted wins at Falmer to attempt a minimum average 1pt/gm overall, which gave a basic target of 38pt total for survival. Chris Hughton used the previous no-game time to get injured players back into contention and also drill all those available in the 25 man squad and likely for selection. Duffy, Hemed (suspended) and Ryan had played for their countries but returned fit & able. But although Dutch m-f link Propper had gotten injured he also turned out today.
* * * match report: Albion nearly made it a day to remember but were eventually left with the point they started with and a whole lot of talking points to boot. The game was goalless until less than ten minutes from the end but burst into life for a climatic conclusion. Ref had a mare and upset Brighton fans with a few strange decisions and lack of f-ks for the hosts. Propper & Dunk were booked around the hour mark for innocuous challenges and Duffy went off injured ten minutes later. Izquierdo simultaneously arrived and Albion began to go forward in earnest. Knockaert made the breakthrough when finishing a move that initially involved Izquierdo's shot being blocked (82min). Murray next limped off as the contest opened out with visitors upping the ante. Knockaert got a very late yellow when taking one for the team and from the f-k Ref booked Bruno and awarded a last minute penalty to Toffees (90min). Hughton said, 'I'm incredibly disappointed, it feels like a defeat. I couldn't see them scoring. I thought we were the side that would capitalise. I've no complaints with the penalty. Because there had been a lot of pushing, Refs eyes were on it.' Brighton fans were left frustrated and booed off the officials. But taking the positives, locals could see Seagulls were quite capable of taking points in the division and all in all was a season's work in progress.

Season14, 8th Premier League (A) Sat 17/8/24 - w 0-3 ~ Mitoma Welbeck Adingra
Everton stayed up again last term and so continued their elite record as never having been relegated. They were q-f participants in the EFL Cup and ko'd at R4 in the FA Cup. Toffees pre-season friendlies; Sligo 3-3 (A), Salford 2-1 (A), Coventry 3-0 (A), Preston 0-3 (A), Motherwell 6-0 (H), Roma 1-1 (H). This Prem fixture was the campaign opener as 1st of 19 away contests (Q1). The reverse game was 25 Jan '25 in mid season (Q2-3) - see home scroll further above. We had drawn both matches last season during Nov '23 (A) & Feb '24 (H) by the same score. Last year we'd met here during early November '23 when gaining a late point on the road. We'd finished 11th 48pts, while Ev'ton were 15th 40pts, with an 8pt deduction. Our Prem record at Goodison versus Toffees was; lll lww d - in all seven seasons to date. We'd got points there too in recent campaigns. They'd recently suffered as a club, burdened by financial problems and funding for building a new ground. So Albion were looking to keep up that undefeated run over the last 3 years on Merseyside - and that meant hitting the ground running. In those last three campaigns we'd been placed 8, 8 & 7 after the 10 game start period (Q1). Hosts boss Sean Dyche was tasked with getting points from the start. He signed 5 new players for 40+m and 2 more on loan to date. Meanwhile BHA had a brand new head coach in Fabian Hurzeler. But Adam Lallana had left us in May to re-join newly promoted So'ton. Also Steven Alzate went in June. Then Pascal Gross signed for B Dortmund and Deniz Undav for Stuttgart in August. We signed Yankuba Minteh (N'castle 30m), Mats Wieffer (Feyenoord 25m), Ibrahim Osman (Nor'land 16m), Malick Yalcouye (Goth'bg 6m) & Amario Cozier-Duberry (Arsenal) in July. Ev'ton had 3 players & BHA 6 at Euro 24 during June. A wider Seagulls squad had then gone to Japan in July as part of a successful pre-season build-up. Albion won both friendly matches, scoring 9 goals. We then played QPR 0-1 (A) and Villarreal 4-0 (H). Next Buonannotte went on loan to Leicester in the week prior to the big kickoff. Headline news this week was we signed Brajan Gruda (Mainz 25m) two days prior to travel for this first and last Prem match at Goodison.
*** match report: Albion got that first-day win and went to top of the Saturday table. We started slowly and Toffees were making things sticky for us during early moments. They had a goal disallowed and also hit the post when it was easier to score. But it was Seagulls, wearing new all-yellow away strip, who took the lead. Mitoma popped Minteh's low centre into the net and things were looking up (26mins). Adingra replaced Minteh just prior to the interval due to concussion protocols. Immediately on turnaround hosts were given a penalty. But VAR said no go to Ref. Albion next went two up when Welbeck struck a shot from outside the area (56mins). Then blue-shirts got bluer when they had a man sent off for denying Mitoma another pop (65mins). Adingra also got on the score-sheet when squeezing in a low strike (87mins). Hurzeler put on subs for valuable squad minutes as visitors cruised to victory. Our young German coach was successfully off the mark and celebrated with Brighton fans after the final whistle. All in all a great start and a clean sheet to boot.

Season13, 7th Premier League (A) Sat 4/11/23 - D 1-1 ~ og
During mid summer pre-season build up Everton first played a friendly in Switzerland, beating Nyonnais 1-2 (A) then hosted Monza 2-2 (H) and S Lisbon 1-0 (H) just prior to Prem campaign kickoff. They'd also gone away to; Wigan 0-1, Bolton 0-0 and Stoke 0-1. Albion were 6th (62pts) and the ever-elite metropolitan Liverpool club 17th (36pts) last term, giving us a 26pts +ve difference. Since joining the elite, Brighton had finished 15, 17, 15, 16, 9, 6, while Everton were 8, 8, 12, 10, 16, 17. Hosts now anticipated a much higher placing than from latest two seasons. Our Prem record at Goodison versus Toffees was; lll lww in six seasons to date. Polarity between previous beginnings & recent endings is clearly marked. And plenty of goals had been scored at both ends too. Going into this early November match BHA were 7th and Everton were 15th from 10 played at the first quarter stage Q1. The Merseyside outfit had spent 45m in the Aug transfer window on 2 buys and also added a free transfer and 2 players via on loan deals. Hosts manager Sean Dyche kept them up last season and so far had a similar job on his hands. Based on previous meetings Brighton were now looking for a third straight away win at Everton.
*** match report: Roberto de Zerbi gave his usual honest assessment of the game afterwards when acknowledging Albion needed to shoot more. Seagulls did come away with a point but not because of scoring by one of our own. Toffees made it very sticky from the word go and netted early when visitors failed to clear lines (7 mins). The rest of game-time was about whether they could win one-nil by holding out against direction of play. We had vast majority of possession but little end product to show for it. Hosts were happy to stand off and then smother forays forwards when things got critical. It was tactics that worked for much of this frustrating match in front of bemused travelling support. Dunk smashed in a Gross f-k after a quarter of an hour but VAR ruled it out for offside moments later. And so it went on... and on. De Zerbi added a striker from beginning of the second period but nothing seemed to provide an equaliser as Albion toiled to break down locals block. With time running out Mitoma put over a cross and a defender deflected it over the keeper (84mins). At the death Everton came out with late attempts to score again but it ended one apiece after further stoppage time antics. All in all disappointment for Brighton fans on another away day up north that won't be remembered with some warm fuzzy feelings. We almost drew a blank until Lady Luck pointed fickle finger of fate - but that's football for sure.

Season12, 6th Premier League (A) Tue 3/1/23 - W 1-4 ~ Mitoma, Ferguson, March, Gross.
New Year dawned but bizarrely this fixture didn't yet mark the halfway stage following a prolonged break for the Prem during Nov & Dec due to the '22 Qatar World Cup finals. Winning at Goodison last term in the Jan '22 New Year fixture reversed a negative trend during a turnaround of fortunes for both clubs. Previously we'd been out with the proverbial washing up there among Merseyside back-to-backs (see away scroll below). It all began in Mar '18, dragged on thru Nov '18, then Jan '20 and Oct '20 to boot, before that up-tick a year ago (seasons 7-11). Hosts were now hoping for rejuvenation, having finished in the bottom six and couldn't seem to win much for toffee. Meanwhile Seagulls flew high, replacing the northwest outfit as a top-ten force to be reckoned with. Albion head coach now was Roberto de Zerbi. He took Seagulls to Dubai for their warm-weather camp during the World Cup finals in December. Everton spent 0m by start of the season - well they did have a new stadium under construction to pay for. But later laid out 85m in the August window. Toffees went to Australia for their winter training break early during those WC group stages in November. The January window was opening and Facundo Buonanotte had already signed for Seagulls from Rosario in Argentina. Mac Allister was just back too, following home leave celebrating being a World Cup winner.
*** match report: visitors notched up our biggest away score to date when putting four goals past hapless Toffees. Unfortunately conceding a spot kick in stoppage time soiled the otherwise clean sheet. Mitoma put Albion ahead when racing into the danger zone from a long pass by Caicedo (14mins). Hosts stayed in the game until halftime and did threaten on occasion. But an early second half six minute blitz by Seagulls put the game to bed prior to the hour mark. Ferguson got his first Prem goal after set up by Sarmiento (51mins). Then March bagged one as travellers were all over locals like a rash (54mins). Finally Gross latched on to a poor defensive back pass and chipped the keeper (56mins). Brighton fans who made it there on a rail strike day were treated to a super display of attacking soccer. So they went home happy, even if the journey was not exactly easy. De Zerbi had pulled off a right result up north by starting young guns and backing them up with regulars as subs. Mac Allister came on after BHA had won it, so it wasn't a case of jet lag on the night. The crimson kit looked bright in the rain as well as locals got the blues in more ways than one. You can only beat what's in front of you and that's what Albion did in fine style.

Season11, 5th Premier League (A) Sun 2/1/22 - W 2-3 ~ Mac Allister 2, Burn.
Although covid caused Albion two pre-Xmas postponements during December, we'd now gotten thru the last calendar year and since August so far had: P18 W5 D9 L4. Four previous visits to Goodison hadn't exactly been prolific for gaining any available possible points up on Merseyside. In fact Albion required to change a sum return of zero into a positive integer on first footy Sunday of month one in '22 - and reduce historic negative goal difference of -7 there to boot. At kickoff BHA away form was: W2 D6 L1 = 1.33pt/gm. Meanwhile Everton at home were W4 D1 L3 = 1.62pt/gm. *** match report: Albion actually scored three times, so recorded a first and sensational victory at Goodison in a five goal thriller. Visitors were very good value for this coming of age contest we hope precludes yet more improvement during '22. Mac Allister starred in an attacking line up when bagging a brace on Merseyside - a place we previously found a tad bleak for getting goals in any month of the season. His first score finished a great team move (3min) and second, a superb drive, gave us the points (71min). In between Burn also got name in the papers with a header from a corner to put Seagulls two up (21min). Toffees got their two thru chasing the game but were always second in line at best (53 & 76min). Potter used subs effectively, strengthening defensively without going too deep or sacrificing forward momentum. Hosts piled it on at the death in a bid to level well after Sunday lunch but it was no-go from lacklustre locals no-show display. And they'd already missed a first half var-awarded pen to boot. Brighton fans were chuffed to bits for a great start to January, following a half decent set of performances during December. Our starting line up today didn't have masses of apps collectively but there was basis for a solid Prem team to evolve over forthcoming weeks. Time would tell, tho the match-day squad appeared strong, confident, capable and in terrific form right at this mo.

Season10, 4th Premeir League (A) Sat 3/10/20 - L 4-2 ~ Maupay, Bissouma.
Match played behind closed doors - no fans attending.
October already but this was merely our second away fixture. Albion were on travels once more having begun this delayed fourth Prem campaign during mid September under ongoing Covid19 pandemic protocols. We were back in Liverpool where over three previous seasons we'd not exactly performed with credit. But being at readiness on the blue side of Stanley Park again, at least on paper, gave us a chance of getting a result - given Seagulls desire to compete as a midtable club in future. Scoring goals here and generally on the road, was something in need of improvement. So to make a plan come together BHA had to get shooting boots on then create and take several oportunities. Veteran legend Murray had gone out on season's loan, in the Championship too, so current scorers Maupay, Connolly, Trossard & March had a fair lot to aspire & achieve before matching anything like his BHA Prem goals record. At time of kickoff, signing a new young Swiss striker in Andi Zeqiri for the first-team squad had just been completed before international transfer deadline day.
*** match report: Albion bombed here once more and continued that poor record at Goodison Park. It was largely of our own failings that Toffees hit four and appeared no stick in the mud outfit on a very wet afternoon. Defensive errors were responsible for the three goals prior to halftime; two by hosts (16 & 45min) and the other from Maupay following keeper's ricket (41min). Lamptey didn't come out for the second period, Seagulls going to 433 but they were soon two behind from another rearguard calamity (52min). A fourth went in with a case of deja vu (70min), which summed up visitors display anyhow. BHA went to 442 but were making the same mistakes time & again... and again. Bissouma got a consolation at the death with a superb volley from distance, worthy of a very late winner in different circumstances. Potter said we had got to improve (stating the obvious), while stay at home Brighton fans were on socials having a drip about all those goals (10) conceded in the Prem so far. Albion did score (8) for the fourth Prem match running, however we'd have required scores of 4-3 twice at home and 4-5 here to collect all the points lost to date. Makes you think... that's a non starter for taking us out of the bottom six and into the top ten by next May.

Season9, 3rd Premier League (A) Sat 11/1/20 - L 1-0.
The Prem resumed for 2020 this January weekend following traditional New Year 3rd round FA Cup ties played a week before, when elite & Championship clubs joined those assorted lower league outfits remaining in the all-encompassing knockout competition. Both these Prem clubs had just been knocked out in that very round, where each had failed to score: Brighton 0-1 @ home to C'ship opposition & Everton 1-0 away on Merseyside. Therefore a reaction was expected from either outfit in order to get back on track pdq. Also the transfer window was now open and Brighton fans regularly checked multimedia outlets for any news of ins & outs. General thoughts were that at least an additional striker was required, given Albion legend Glenn Murray hadn't even figured in the match-day 18 lately. Graham Potter's squad was considered a work in progress, bearing in mind lack of PL apps by some players introduced during 2019. His best eleven was a mix of experience and youth, so needed a full season to get up to speed as an integral unit. Of course this assumed selected personnel capable of reaching necessary physical & mental skills required. Today would be a good test of current standards.
* * * match report: Albion came up short in a single goal game that was pretty basic Prem fare bar the skillful home winner (38min). Visitors were not at the races in the first half, suffering from lack of cohesion and team coordination from back to front. After the break Potter changed shape and moved guys around but Seagulls were always chasing the game. On the hour mark a double swap inserted Gross & Alzate and later vetran Murray (who knew?) entered the fray. VAR was consulted on a couple of occasions but not much else happened to actually alter the score onging. Motd highlights that evening concentrated on Toffees - however Seagulls flattered to deceive in the final analysis. We merely looked a lesser Championship outfit in the final third, quite lightweight and lacking a bit of grit. Brighton fans realised this team wasn't cutting the mustard, missing that edge to get us precious points on the road. It was all big pr talk beforehand on the official web site/app and plenty of excuses given for failure afterwards. Potter was left in the same position as Hughton over the last two seasons, with a huge challenge to eventually hit basic target totals by May. Whether he could prove as good as his predecessor and thereby too become a pukka Prem coach was yet to be determined.

Season8 2nd Premier League (A) Sat 3/11/18 - L 3-1 ~ Dunk.
The second quarter had begun and results to date set a trend going into end of the current calendar year, when we were quickly due to meet Toffees once more (see Home above). Albion's basic requirement points-wise was to match last term's survival tally of 40pts and prior to kickoff were averaging 1.40pt/gm or a projected equivalent of 53pts by May. However away form could be cause for concern and remained an area for improvement. Defeats at Watford 2-0, Liverpool 1-0 & Man City 2-0 were so far balanced positively by So'ton 2-2 & Newcastle 0-1. Keeping clean sheets was to be the priority, given Seagulls couldn't rely on Murray to score week in week out. Other players found it extra hard to get on the score-sheet, let alone notch figures to reflect their supposed PL abilty come the final analysis.
* * * match report: A poor second half performance sealed Albion's fate, having scored a rare away goal to get level again by the interval. Hosts fast counter from a BHA corner initially put visitors behind (26). But Dunk (already booked on 10min) got up to head an equaliser from a corner routine (33). In the second period visitors were pressed from word go and an opposing wingback netted from range (50). Hughton sent on Knockaert after the hour to work the home rearguard and later Bissouma to strengthen centrally. He was preparing to introduce Andone when Toffees made it extra sticky for Seagulls to get anything sweet from the contest. Dunk's square pass was picked up by the on-fire striker and he did the biz no probs against Duffy & Ryan (77). Hughton said, 'it's our second season and there is going to be ups & downs. We have to accept that, dust ourselves down and make sure you're ready next time.' Brighton fans could see Albion struggled to penetrate the final third and once more the team lacked PL class in m-f & beyond. The defence also had an off day and so the game was well & truly up.

Season7 1st Premier League (A) 10/3/18 - L 2-0.
So began the run-in of nine fixtures and which ever way Brighton fans looked, it was a tough one on paper. Trips to Man City & Liverpool still beckoned. And our PL future would predominately be decided by results against sides established in top half of the table. Thereby only a couple of remaining fixtures could be classed as six pointers versus fellow relegation threatened opposition. Away form to date was: P14 W2 D4 L8 F7 A17 Pt10 = 0.71pt/gm or 29.4% of campaign points tally. At the three quarters stage Albion were 10th and 6pts above 17th, the last place of safety. But results on the road were in need of improvement whichever way you figured it.
* * * match report: It turned out to be another proverbial disaster on the road, not of biblical proportions exactly but maybe amiss according to the travel gospel of Chris Hughton. Albion did what they had to do for an hour, staying in the contest despite being up against it. But once falling behind, there was only gonna be one result. Full backs & wingers had mares and the rest weren't on their game that much either. Schelotto went into the book in the second half and then Bong put thru his own net (60min). Locadia next replaced Kayal and BHA went to orthodox 442. A few moments afterwards Everton won it with a strong shot as defenders gave way (76min). Ulloa turned up but minutes later Knockaert got a straight red for studs up. Suttner came on for closing minutes. All in all a day to forget quickly. Hughton said, 'I was surprised at our performance. But at this level it's difficult to raise your game for every match.' It kinda sounded like an excuse for a team who didn't turn up and shoulda ensured we kept the status quo by not getting beat at least.
