Season6 (H) 9/8/16 League Cup r1 - 4-0 ~ Baldock, Murphy 2, Manu.
The Championship season had started with an away match the previous Saturday but this tie began a run of three home games. Albion had come unstuck against useful League One outfit Walsall away in r2 last term, so Chris Hughton was mindful of this proverbial banana skin. However, beforehand he said, 'I will make wholesale changes. We have got a competitive squad.' In the event he fielded a completely different team to that which turned out in the opening league fixture. Hughton introduced three youngsters from the development squad; Rob Hunt, Ben White and Sam Adekugbe, all in defence. Also appearing on debut was new signing Oliver Norwood in midfield. Up front a strong trio of 1st team squad members, Murphy, LuaLua & Baldock was joined by fringe player Elvis Manu. On the night a poor crowd of around merely 7k assembled in the east & west stands to watch the tie. Problems on the railways due to strikes had put a huge dent in the sale of tickets, despite the club making efforts to provide extra park & ride places.
*** match report: Albion took a long time to score the first goal, taking the game to United from kick off but going into the interval still on nil-nil. There were plenty of chances but the opposition managed to maintain stalemate against one way traffic. Baldock notched the first when LuaLua showed skill in assist (64min). The impact player got man of the match and provided another great ball when setting up Murphy (70min). Manu then got on the score-sheet from a pass by Baldock (74min). Finally Murphy topped a fine solo effort with a run across the box (84min). The back 5 was solid, kept a clean sheet and the boys done good. Norwood was accomplished in a 2 man midfield that reflected the 1st 11 orthodox 442 formation. So Seagulls flew into the second round, albeit taking a long while to eventually take off.
