Season4 (H) 12/8/14 League Cup r1 - 2-0 ~ Dunk, Mackail-Smith.
This Capital One affair immediately followed Albion's abortive home league start to the season. On the Saturday before the Tuesday evening, a single goal defeat showed frailties in the new plan of attack devised by Sami Hyypia in his first match as manager at the Amex. Meanwhile Town had won away on opening day up north and were already fifth in League2 - alphabetically. Hyppia made four changes to his staring eleven, letting a couple of youngsters have a chance to stake claims for match-day team inclusion. A poor turn out of less than 7k left echos around the Amex after k-o.
*** match report: It was goalless at halftime and as anticipated, travellers had come to frustrate - back off to their area, then try to break when in possession again. Albion were patient and did create openings but failed to turn dominance into goals. Hypia set BHA up with 4312 shape with wingbacks getting well forward to provide width. In the second period it was more of same stalemate until LuaLua arrived (68min). Ten mins later he slid a corner to Calderon who crossed and Dunk headed home at the far post (79min). At the death LuaLua pushed CMS thru to slip it under the keeper and make the score reflect Albion superiority. The job was done, although Brighton fans were worried by lack of real class getting from A to B. It was workmanlike but Seagulls needed to step it up against better opposition in future.
Stockdale, Calderon, Greer, Dunk, Chicksen, Bruno, Ince, Agustien (LuaLua), Forster-Caskey, Mackail-Smith, O'Grady.
