memorable match: Season6 (A) - fine margins in a div where class should count to advantage.
Season6 (A) Championship 17/9/16 - w 0-1 ~ Hemed.
This was the first league meeting of two Albions, the midlands outfit having risen from non-league ranks as champions in 2009, while Seagulls were regulars in League One. A League Cup tie in 2014 (see below) had revealed the difference in overall class but Brewers had kinda bridged that gap now, following back-to-back lower league promotions. Brighton's squad was vastly different these days and merely Stockdale, Dunk & LuaLua were first 11 choices, while Ince was only on fringes and O'Grady out on loan at Burton! Chris Hughton had latterly steadied the ship after a blip in form with consecutive defeats and was looking for an initial away win this term. On a good day Seagulls were more than capable of victory, as long as they kept a clean sheet. Hughton said, 'these are all big games and you can't do well if you don't have enough character in the team.' His next analysis would be after the event, when reviewing the result and seeing if coaching, selection & tactics were up to
expectation - for that promotion push.
*** match report: Albion left it late to break stalemate but eventually took all three points with a penalty. Hughton went with a 4411 shape, using Murphy in the no.10 position behind Hemed. Credit must be given to Brewers who defended resolutely, without threatening at the other end too much. Visitors dominated possession and created chances from kickoff but failed to find the net in open play. A tad beyond the hour, Hughton withdrew Murphy for Murray and switched to orthodox 442. Shortly afterwards Bruno came off for Hunt. Ten minutes from time Norwood got on for Kayal. With the clock running down, Skalak was tripped in the area following a run by Knockaert. Hemed duly stepped up to the spot to convert the one on one (88min). Hughton said, 'we had to really fight for that. I don't think anybody would deny that we deserved to win the game, we just had that little bit of something at the end.' Brighton fans went home relieved because it took their team closer to p-o places and got a touch of self belief back this term.

Season4 (A) 24/9/14 League Cup r3 - w 0-3 ~ Ince, LuaLua, Mackail-Smith.
In a weird sorta way, BHA had in the past been a lesser club when drawn against some of the bigger boys in this competition. But during August '14 Seagulls had flown into round three off the back of two victories over lower league clubs and here we go again. But this tie wasn't expected to be a push over either - see Swindon & Cheltenham previous encounters. And Burton were sure to make it best of the Albions, as they were going great guns among pacesetters at L2. In fact, as twice very recent p-o participants too, they were now 2nd in the division and also won four from four at home this term. BHA came here off the back of a disappointing run of two home draws & two away defeats in the Championship. Sami Hyypia made nine changes to the Saturday league eleven and used rotation to full effect. On the night, over 600 BHA fans attended in a crowd of a little over 3k.
*** match report: Brighton won this tie a little comfortably and opposition were reduced to merely a couple of on/offs & corners. Albion were on top from word go and Ince opened the scoring for Seagulls with a header in the goalmouth from Gardener's nod over the area, after McCourt's deep f-k (18min). LuaLua was running amok and added the second with a solo effort and shot from o/s the area (37min). Following the break, visitors absorbed what pressure the home unit provided by way of counters and continued to go forward. CMS notched one in trademark style with McCourt getting the assist (67min). Albion went on to keep a clean sheet, although Stockdale saw more action when Calderon was sent off (88min) for dangerous play. Hyypia introduced Toko in lieu of McCourt (70min) with the game won and later Colunga replaced LuaLua (78min). Sami was happy with new playmaker McCourt and said, 'he was running back and that's what we want him to do as well. When he can do that in league games then why not play him.' Albion went straight into the hat and were drawn away again - against Spurs!
Stockdale, Calderon, Dunk, Hughes, Chicksen, Gardner, Ince, McCourt (Toko), Mackail-Smith, LuaLua (Colunga), O'Grady.

memorable match: Season6 (H) - a game that displayed the fortress Amex tag in a C'ship promo campaign.
Season6 (H) Championship 11/2/17 - 4-1 ~ Hemed 2, Baldock, Murray.
Albion's home record this term was very good again to date - w11 d2 l1. And Chris Hughton was hoping to turn the Amex into a fortress once more until end of the season - to assist with Seagulls second successive promotion push thru springtime to the run in. It was the first Falmer fixture for nearly three weeks and meanwhile performances & results on the road had been disappointing. So there was even greater emphasis on getting three points, to keep abreast of Newcastle in the top two auto-promo positions. Hughton was hoping to field a strong side & bench, albeit with two recent youngsters added on loan from Prem clubs - Tomori (Chelsea) & Akpom (Arsenal). Fit again Stephens & Baldock returned but Goldson was ruled out for rest of the season with a heart condition. This day was the 20th anniversary of Fans United held at the old Goldstone Ground in 1997.
*** match report: Albion did the biz ok and were helped with getting off the mark early. Hemed converted the first of a brace from a low centre by Knockaert (12min). Surprisingly Brewers stayed in the game but fell two behind soon after half time. Baldock tapped in from a March square centre (47min). Ten minutes later March was brought down in the area and Hemed took the spot kick (57min). Hughton then made a triple sub with 20 mins to go. But yellow shirts pulled one back immediately from a stunning f-k over the wall (75min). Murray restored the three goal lead when heading home a cross from Knockaert (83min). Hughton said, 'Tomer was in on merit because he has been scoring goals. But Murray did well too and we need them pushing for positions. All three strikers scored and each had decent tallies for the respective number of apps. Onward and hopefully upward.
