nostalgia: in 2027 it was 30 years since BHA survived as a Football League club. 2026 had been our 125th anniversary and coincided with 25 years since first promotion within the EFL at Withdean from 1999. Barnet were equivalent of a League Two club at turn of the century. There were 4 EFL meetings thru the Withdean era to 2011. We first met for fixtures in 1999. And last in 2001. Cup ties played in '07, '08 & '17.

Albion were now a Prem club, while Barnet were still kicking around in League Two. It had been a while since we'd met back in the Withdean era, once each for both League Cup & Trophy ties at the old sports complex. Chris Hughton had added to the squad during pre-season but was expected to select a second eleven side for this August evening k-o at the Amex. In the event he made all 11 changes to the last Prem fixture team-sheet. Hughton elected to take some senior pros from off the bench and blend with U23 youngsters Jayson Molumby, James Tilley & Aaron Connolly, plus a couple of new signings, Ales Mateju & Soufyan Ahannach. The rest of subs was made up of regular first teamers.
*** match report: Albion progressed to the 3rd round but were not that impressive overall. Molumby started and had a good game, while some older pros didn't quite cut the mustard. But Barnet performed with credit, to make life hard for hosts in all areas. Knockaert also started, having come back from injury, although only got 45mins. He missed a good chance to score and was booked for dissent when coming off at the break. For the second period, Tilley replaced him, while Mateju got on too - swapping sides with Rosenior. Tilley pounced, following a great ball by Molumby, when Rosenior's shot rebounded (53min). Connolly later arrived with fresh legs. Barnet pressed but Albion held out, although Bees hit a post. BHA defence looked solid and Maenpaa made a crucial save. But going forward and up front Albion made hard work of it against a well drilled rearguard of massed ranks. it was the same old story of not being quick enough to exploit gaps, or take men on one-to-one with higher skills - that any Brighton fan would hope to see on show at this level. Coaches report said - must do better in future!
