Plymouth - Home, Withdean Era
Season 12 (H) 22/2/11 - 4-0 ~ Murray 2, Wood, Sandaza
This fixture was originally listed on the Saturday afternoon beforehand but got moved to following Monday evening for TV appearance money. Then Albion got to FAC5 payday and played that away tie on the weekend anyway. So yeah, we'd now got just another league1 Tuesday night at good old Withers. But hey, it coulda been worse. B'ton were doing good under Uruguayan genius Gus Poyet and were after promotion back to the Championship again as of old - see below, read it and weep. The embittered noughties Falmer site had been transformed into an iconic stadium for 2011, which we would occupy for next term come hell or high water. Chairman Tony Bloom had funded it for 93million and the first fixture after twelve seasons at Withdean (see Y2K matches below) was sure to be a 22.5k sell-out. It had been a long time in preparation but was sure to be worth that often irksome wait. Meanwhile Argyle were in desperate straits and bottom with -10pt penalty for entering administration. On the night it was fair and nearly 7300 attended, including 250 PA fans - that's loyalty.
B'ton finally went ahead from Murray when he turned in a useful move up front from 433 shape (28min). Just before half time Wood took a dig from range and goalie dived under it (41m). Immediately on resuming, Murray added a third with a right piledriver (48m). Albion retained possession and didn't really give Argyle a chance to get at Ankergren, bar a couple of hopeful attempts. Gus put Noone on at an hour gone, then Sandaza with ten mins left. Our super-sub duly notched with a solo effort right on time (90). Momentum was building for a big promo push, as we'd been out in front for months and rivals couldn't bridge a points gap. All the while we created opportunities to score, odds were on picking up yet more pts. B'ton fans had fingers crossed for a very successful spring time - our last here at W'dean and hopefully in league1 too.

Season 7 (H) 29/8/05 - 2-0 ~ Robinson, Carpenter
A false dawn broke on a truly beautiful Bank Holiday Monday in Sussex. Shirtsleeves and sunglasses were much in evidence as Brighton ran riot on a magnificent summer pitch. There was even a touch of garden party in the air. Albion recorded their first win of the season, with a performance of quality. Afterwards there remained a feeling that more victories would follow and that 4-2-4 was a winner by only a slight stretch of fertile imagination.
Robinson won a tackle around Pilgrims box and quickly rolled in a cannon ball to start a sinking. How it stayed at 1-0 before time for refreshments on a warm afternoon is still a mystery. Carpenter grabbed a goal on the restart, when firing off a shot through their woodwork and sending 'em on down deep. Hart unexpectedly started at right back, as Reid was usually now on the left. Knight became a midfield general come right-to-roam, while Jarrett and Carole double flying wingers. Withdeanites went home happy for once.

A new scheme had been implemented for youth teams, whereby apprenticeships were reduced to two years. To date, 18 year olds had been slowly introduced to the squad with a view to becoming a first team regular. Fast track was now an option but Albion sought to send youngsters out on work experience, often with Sussex non-league clubs. Dean Wilkins said, 'a players development can cost anything up to 8 thou. The new system means they will have to be signed as a professional and confines them to reserve football.' McGhee also said, 'we're working hard to improve, please get behind the team, particularly young players - regardless of setbacks.'
After losing to Plymouth in the new Coca-cola Championship, Brighton was rock bottom of the table that Tuesday night. The evening didn't kick-off too well when Cullip nodded past Kuipers on 10 minutes, although there was a question about it being over the line. Just prior to a supposed lively interval for refreshments, Argyle were awarded a penalty. Harding got sent off for two bookables and B'ton were two down. For a further forty-five minutes Albion chased around, looking disjointed and out of step as a unit. Keeping possession and passing were atrocious overall, while opposition played much better football. B'ton with a host of changes of position and shape, didn't look at all professional and got nothing from the contest. McGhee carried the can for this inept performance, sighting a lack of options, inexperience, no money and little time to integrate the squad. He promised to put everything right, overcome disappointment and create a better team, to improve over a season. However he did admit to knowing it would be difficult.

Season 5 (H) 31/1/04 - 2-1 ~ Benjamin, Knight
They came up from the west country for a 5.35 k-o with television cameras to record a clash of league leaders with p-o hopefuls. Steaming straight on course for a second promotion, Plymouth had already opened up a nautical mile or more to teams left bobbing in their wake. They'd only lost twice on the long road from Devon and had made pasties of over half a dozen opponents in six months. Weather conditions were windy in the extreme but it was winter after global warming of 2003. For once Withdean was buzzing and fans were behind Brighton from k-o and kept it going as of the 'old' days.
Benjamin opened his account on 12 minutes with a shot from a Carpenter nod on. Away support was stunned by forceful whirlwind attacking tactics in front of 'em. Virgo crossed for Knight to poach a goal from open play on local turf. Argyle were blown away by a storming power display and against the wind too. 433 was flavour of the month and we had enough chances to be 3 or 4 up by the break and that versus a side with more zeros against them than Pearl Harbor. Midfield was giving it total commitment, fighting hard and setting up strong running strikers. Defence gave nowt away and made table toppers look less than double division hoppers. Both sides changed shape in the second period and Plymouth had a spell of pressure - for 45 minutes! They got one back near the death but we held on for a nite to remember.
Adam Virgo had seized his chance to make it as a pro after being out with the washing since well before Coppell arrived in div1 disaster days. He had been a stalwart in reserves with Butters, who had earlier returned to the fold and both never looked back. The emergence of McPhee, Hinshelwood, Virgo, Harding, El-Abd and Robinson had set in motion a final stage of youth development that would expand extensively in years to come.

Season 2 (H) 24/10/00 - 2-0 ~ Carpenter, Zamora
Tuesday night - it must be Plymouth! Last year, we always seemed to be playing Pilgrims after fairly frequent meetings in that old div2 era. They weren't exactly getting their act together this term, although huge fan-base and potential would give them some leverage when waking up. The trouble with fellow sleeping giants was, they too were slow to arouse as proverbial axes hovered between strokes. It was sometimes hard to differentiate stifled shouts from screams, between bouts of snoring. One way or another you needed a revamped home to fully grow into or failing that, a move to greener pastures. There were a lot of 'big' similarities between both south-coast clubs of over two hundred miles distance apart.
A useful sequence of home form had elevated Brighton to dizzy heights in div3. This first third of the season had proved to be an improvement on last term's dress rehearsal, which was a trial run in more meanings than merely one. It was 'all right on the night' and the better team won. Albion had to break Argyle down and this took a majority of time allowed in the first half. Carpenter let fly what was to become a party piece and Pilgrims were properly pooped. A right foot dig from Zamora kept up his steadily increasing total of goals for a first season striker. He wasn't under intense pressure to be a single star in our apparent rise from Skint, down in the gutter. Other men were also adding important figures to our tally, although BZ had got 9 from all fixtures so far. Each team display was underlining Adams innovative decision to go with a 4-5-1 formation and let Bobby take the brunt of big, beefy back-lines. He would often drift toward a flank and had skills to hold the ball up while midfield galloped forward. The kid was strong and also good in the air. Of course others sat up and took notice. You have to remember only nine months beforehand versus Plymouth at Withdean he'd made a first ever league appearance. Oh and scored too.

Season 1 (H) 12/2/00 - 1-1 ~ Zamora
During something of an in-and-out season to date, Brighton ran into a lean period and latterly hadn't won for seven matches. To compound that statistic, five had been defeats including an AWS tie at Bournemouth after extra time. Micky Adams tended to put out a fairly settled line-up, ably led by ever-present Rogers who'd scored five league goals. Striker Hart notched six from 28 div3 appearances and Freeman eight from 24 apps. Others had pitched in too like Oatway four from 26, Watson three 26, Aspinall three 19, Cullip three 22, and Crosby two 20. Certain players from Adams initial pre-season batch now appeared to be falling by the wayside like Campbell one from 23, Thomas one 27, Carr none in 14 and Cameron none 17. Adams was conscious of the fact that Albion had failed to score in a third of matches and five 'nils' occurred in their last six league games. Basically he was desperate for a player to fill marksman boots especially as big Italian target-man Pinamonte had disappeared, over the North Downs to west London. There was a kid on loan at Bath City who had scored eight times in six appearances but couldn't get a game for Bristol Rovers. He came on loan to us and Bobby Zamora went straight into a striker's role.
Brighton were sick of playing Plymouth and FA Cup apart, always seemed to concede goals to them. Argyle had fairly recently been competing in div2 and were therefore a benchmark for middle order outfits to get a result from. Suddenly Sussex were on the wrong end of a long south coast scrap when the Devon club took an early lead. It was not as if twenty-one faces were strangers to one another and many Brighton fans feared for yet another one-nil reversal. Step up Zamora who beat green-shirts in their goalmouth as the keeper made a hash of his effort. Zamora was substituted but Adams must have seen enough to realise this kid had got something extra for an inexperienced pro. What Bobby could do was make div3 defences look ordinary and if he could do it now, what later?

Season 1 (H) 30/11/99 FAC 2R - 1-2 ~ Cullip
It was all a lottery at end of the day, especially for an FA Cup round two replay versus Plymouth on a Tuesday night, for the last date in November of a final year in the old century, if not to say second millennium. Bizarrely this knockout tie was one of two in a sequence of five continuous home contests over little more than a fortnight. Seeing was er, believing and at end of this Withdean marathon, BHA had lost two of three div3 fixtures and only won an AWS match. That win was witnessed by a mere 2500 gate, being less than half the usual sell-out audience at our open-air sports complex. Incidentally this run contained only one Saturday afternoon because a scheduled away game got postponed in the interim. Freeman and Cullip had been sent off in Devon from that first encounter of a goal-less kind but both played here due to FA rules & regs applying at the time. They started suspensions following this contest, four games for Freeman due to two reds for repeat ott behaviour and one for Cullip. Ironically Hart and Aspinall were serving one game bans for five yellows in league fixtures. Adams philosophically said, 'he who never fell never climbed. We are a small div3 squad and we can ill afford to lose players to silly suspensions. This is something we must eradicate from our game. I certainly won't tolerate it at this football club.'
Cullip scored and also hit the bar but Albion got beat and we were only level for a minute. Cork said, 'we've got a nice bunch of boys and they're a little too nice. We got back into the game, then from kick-off never touched the ball. Even in under-twelve football they know in that situation you need to get the ball back and calm things down.' Pilgrims progressed to round three against Reading, while Darlington won that lucky lottery draw to visit Aston Villa. Micky Adams called it 'a farce' as he hated the idea of a loser getting a free opportunity for a money spinning pot at a Prem club. He did not see a level playing field for others hoping to face big-boys who had actually won through, only to be unlucky when subsequently drawn against lower league opponents once more. Complicated maybe but you could definitely see some sense in that argument.
Walton, Watson, Cullip, Hobson, Crosby, Johnson, Rogers, Oatway, Thomas, Freeman (Mayo), Cameron (Ramsay).

Plymouth - Away, Withdean Era
Season 12 (A) 21/9/10 - 2-0 ~ Elphick, Barnes
This fixture was originally scheduled for beginning of September but international call up got in the way. Well, for Argyle anyway, although by now Albion had enough foreign players on books to form an intercontinental eleven. There was Brezovan and Ankergren, Calderon, Baz, Battipiedi, Kishishev, Sandaza, er, Ronaldo and er... Anyway Gus Poyet got his squad sorted and found he had cover for most positions. Even asst mngr Taricco was in training to be replacement left back if required. We had a development group of young pros under coach Luke Williams and it was hoped a few could be fast tracked when deemed up to speed.
Albion weathered early pressure and began to get their passing game going. On 22min, Elphick was forward and got on to Bennett's f-k at the near post. It was the lift Seagulls needed to fly and just before h-t Barnes doubled the score (42m). It seemed he gesticulated to home fans but could have been waving goodbye to old haunts. In the second period Argyle threw the proverbial galley sink at us but B&W held firm against a green onslaught. There were chances at both ends after LuaLua (60) and Sandaza (69) came on to give a more orthodox 442. Each man could have bagged a third goal in a frantic finish. We got a clean sheet and jumped above p-o contenders to boot.

Season 7 (A) 4/3/06 - 0-1
A goalkeeping mistake can inevitably cost a goal against. Brighton could ill afford to go one behind as they found it very hard to score, so a draw was probably the best that might result by bitter end. Hendo fluffed a punch and got lobbed - bummer. Almost as ludicrous was a mix and un-match strip of dark blue shorts and Argentinian stripes - very Palookaville in green, sunny and spring-like Devon. Teams similar to Plymouth had kicked around in lower leagues as akin to Albion history but somehow had managed to hold onto Championship status. It certainly appeared Brighton were for the drop, having lost eight in continuous sequence on the road since December. In fact there was only one win from New Year, in a run of ten games home and away with one draw.
Brighton fans were being asked to apply for season tickets in '06/7 and a good many had negative responses. It was pretty dire at Withdean anyway, without taking another season's poor home record into account. Away form that had read, W1 D8 L 2 at beginning of December was now registering as typical relegation fodder. Travelling had become a chore, like going to a long lost distant relative's funeral each fortnight. Brighton fans were weary of another wake, McGhee seemed in denial and heads were dropping in the team. Over 500 die-hards had gotten down to the West Country but several of expected well-known usual suspects went missing - presumably to delights of gardening leave. Some thought McGhee should probably try it.

Season 6 (A) 12/3/05 - 1-5 ~ Oatway
Going into this fixture Brighton had generally been eight to ten points above drop zone places since helped by a half decent run of results from New Year. After this disturbing defeat they had been pegged back to six. Quite why the lads had begun to go from hero to zero was difficult to determine. There were also a number of clubs below Wolves in mid-table who were looking over their shoulders at second from bottom position. Rotherham were surely down bar mathematics. Plymouth were one such suspect side and an interesting relegating battle was developing during the run-in. Several six pointers were coming up of which Albion had a share. The Sussex over achievers also had to alternatively play some top sides for good measure.
Plymouth had scored four by 35 minutes and a nice day in the west country was quickly turning into heading for the car park early to avoid congestion on the A386. Oatway had put us on terms for all of two minutes either side of a couple of giveaways. Hinshelwood was pushed, handled and penalised with a spot kick for their second. Argyle went two ahead when Shaaban was flagged outside the box and failed to see the free kick that flew past as a result. Mood among Albion faithful who turned up by 700 in a gate of 15000 was not too downcast. Most had never seen anything like the bizarre happenings on a footy field before. Even a 5th for the Home Park mob was on a break from one of our free kicks. We played in all yellow but weren't, nor as green as Devon grass but trying to maintain professional pride in a pilgrimage to a new world of survival of the fittest. Oh, Carpenter was sent off on 68 min for violent conduct, or rather officials again getting the wrong end of the stick. Was it a rout?

Season 5 (A) 30/8/03 - 3-3 ~ og, Butters, Knight
Over eight hundred travelling support made it to re-developed Home Park. It poured beforehand but didn't seem at all bad in outer reaches of Devon during the afternoon. Nine thousand from the southwest peninsular witnessed a blue and white balloon fest prior to on-field action. There were more treats for visitors to the West Country when one of theirs lobbed his own goalie from 40 yards before 15 min had passed. Five minutes later a free header got the team in green a leveller from a corner that evaded masses on the near post. New boy Roberts made a couple of acrobatic saves, then resurgent defender Butters capitalised on a keeper's error to net a B'ton second. We were probably worth a 2-1 h-t lead following plenty of movement and countless corners.
It always appeared to be a game of surprises and despite Plymouth pressure Albion took a two-goal lead. In the 73rd minute a counter attack saw Henderson set up Knight who slotted home below Seagulls superb support. The real killer chance came soon after. Ref played advantage to a pro foul when Henderson stayed upright to go one on one. He unfortunately put the chance well wide. To score three away should get us all the points, such a cushion being of huge advantage. However Pilgrims came to the altar and made saintly subs count late in the day. Albion failed to lock the door and prevent a late surge of worshippers at the home end. Plymouth pulled one back as this game continued as an end-to-end spectacle into the last quarter time-wise. By not containing their long ball style with some controlled possession, we let 'em back in. A slight worry was abandoning passing to chasing, which left Knight out of subsequent service. There was too much in the air instead of to feet. Ten minutes from time Plymouth scored, one minute from time they equalised.

Season 2 (A) 14/4/01 - 2-0 ~ Brooker, Zamora
Home Park could have been a worse place to go for an Easter Saturday parade of Albion supporters. The impact of 1300 travelling b&w devoted swelled to nearly 7500, a West Country crowd awaiting bulldozers and their own new beginning. That old Barn Park end terrace was a sea of blue and white stripes plus assorted scarves, hats, caps, balloons and concealed 'lucky' socks, T-shirts and er, other underwear for good measure. It all turned into quite a party by end of ninety promotion chasing minutes.
The secret of Micky Adams squad of lower league over-achievers was in a pretty tight defence. He had assembled players of experience who had known previous promotions and the mental maturity that went hand in er, foot with athletic ability. Of course having a find like Zamora up front was a Godsend but we were far from a one-man team. In nineteen away fixtures Brighton had conceded eighteen goals and collected eight clean sheets. We'd nicked a few close contests and our best win on the road was believe it or not 2-0, so in a sense some had been ground out and nobody had whitewashed us either. If opponents adopted a packed midfield to combat Brighton's spearhead shape, they tended to be out battled before our rearguard actually needed to mop up their strikers.
A standard two-nil win, with a very early shot from edge of the area by Brooker and a dig closer in ten minutes later by Zamora, sealed another victory on a foreign field albeit a south coast one. After Ref blew his final whistle and players exchanged handshakes, results filtered through from elsewhere. People did the maths and yes, Brighton had gained promotion. This came relatively quickly in the period following a homecoming season, involving rebuilding of the club by Dick Knight and of the team by Micky Adams. The incredible Withdean era was well underway and as fans and followers celebrated, it underlined a first remarkable success and in our centenary year too.

Season 1 (A) 5/9/99 - 3-3 ~ Oatway 2, Freeman
People had been writing to their MP about Albion. There had been lengthy queues for tickets at Seagulls shop in town and their phone was forever busy. Our team was back in Brighton and many supporters who had waited over two years to see them play again were prevented by local logistics, adding further frustration. Capacity at Withdean was a mere 6000 with 4500 season ticket holders taking up a majority of seats. The club wanted to make a quantity of tickets available on an individual match basis but their dreaded system couldn't cope. Heaven forbid that attending at Brighton would eventually become exclusive, like a south coast version of elite metropolitan 'prawn sandwich' audiences, with excess disposable income for luxury leisure and pleasure pursuits. Two diverse sets of fans began to emerge for home and away fixtures. Pay at the gate was attractive to many and transport costs were less than renting a 23 game plastic open-air seat, when using selective or ad hoc away trip measures. One such decent day-out was chosen to visit Plymouth and over 600 got along to that Barn Park end. Argyle also intended to blitz their Home Park flat and rebuild for Y2K and hopefully a happier future. That should make it a nice place to return to.
Relegation from div2 in trying to secure a place in 1998, had left Plymouth a mid table div3 outfit but with aspirations of elevation again. Brighton breezed in for a Hoe down on a Sunday to face Pilgrims. Thus occurred various halts in progress as, on a warm and sunny story-filled afternoon, Albion twice equalised Argyle's lead through Freeman and Oatway. It was end-to-end stuff, where chances regularly came up and were taken in turn. Oatway got a second to double his tally for this season and put Brighton ahead. There followed much Seagulls and Drakes confusion as our defence hesitated to attack an amassed armada of green shirts sailing close to er, sound us out. Plymouth completed their game of bowling us over and shared a six-gun broadside as a salute to cut and thrust footy. Everybody agreed it was a highly entertaining spectacle but as Micky Adams said, 'there are no mistakes in life only lessons.' So we had better start learning 'em and fast.

Season 1 (A) 20/11/99 FAC 2 - 0-0
As the draw for FA Cup round two was announced, Brighton hadn't actually completed round one against Peterborough. Our next opponents might have been Brentford had Plymouth not won their replay at Home Park. Brighton fans quite liked going to the West Country instead of all points north forever, although west London wasn't obviously so bad. Times were changing and it was happening in lower leagues as well while we all waited for the new millennium. Brighton were in transit at a temporary home, Peterborough had not long had a big new stand plus Barry Fry and Brentford might get a huge new ground. In 1998 Micky Adams left Griffin Park to go job hunting when Ron Noades arrived full of er, ideas. Things at Plymouth were also in the melting pot. Central Park on Outland Road was Plymouth's equivalent suburban green space and their local authority wanted to build an all-singing, all-dancing sports complex and let Argyle share every other Saturday. There followed various protests from all parties and Brighton fans even got a bit of a shout in the league game back in September - because we like demonstrating! Well in advance of 700 travelling supporters joined in a crowd of 7000, which improved on both away and aggregate attendances from that exciting div3 fixture. The last time we'd got a chance at round three was when Adams was a player for Fulham in '95 - oh no!
Quite how these two south coast sides shared a goal-less draw following three apiece in September, when one or the other needed to score to immediately progress, was one of the last great mysteries of a fast disappearing twentieth century. Freeman was red carded with an hour gone. Fifteen minutes later Cullip received a second yellow and Albion were down to nine men and seemingly also booked for an early exit. Pilgrims piled on the agony and could afford to bring numbers sailing forward. Walton and a revamped mass defence battled heroically. Adams said, 'I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. It was a performance full of courage. The players showed pride and determination that was extremely commendable. We decided plan B would come into action then plan C. I turned to Corky and asked him what it was. He was still thinking about B.'
