Based on the numbers shown in TARGET COUNTDOWN that looks into Albion's future, what were we set-for to finish '07/8 campaign in League 1? As predicted much earlier we made top ten.
On this global launch site stats really is rocket science.

old combats, new contests

During '07/8, this important season ahead will be an ninth campaign in the Withdean era, since Albion's homecoming in 1999. Throughout that previous 8 yr period (0-7) we have been in an equivalent tier, twice for League 2, three times in each of League 1 and the Championship. Not a bad record considering those well documented constraints our football club is forced to operate under.

Below is a list of clubs Brighton play this term, showing when we last met and at what level. Overall there is quite a competitive but mixed bunch on offer. Due to a yoyo nature of these last half a dozen annual, win/lose scenarios, some old opponents (1 2) are again in our sights. Conversely teams with Championship credentials (C) are going to test us, as they aim to hit the big time once more. By anyones standards it should be one hell of a scrap this year - onward to battle!!

Our next fixture is always highlighted.

Albion Squad:

Upfor Grabs Pukka 'union' keeper wanted, GSOH, Champ's experience essential. Apply to BHA, Falmer boot room, Stadium of Knight. Ex-England or Inter'nal optional. Double Dutch a possibility.
ANDREW WHING Useful pro as defensive player and got up and down. Pretty consistent at rb generally. Gave his all and got stuck in to say the least. Ban for 5 yellows. Made a difference to build up and crosses. Blocked most threats in routine displays. Injured, quick recovery and business as usual. Then off sick, back and in form. Didn't pick it up for a top 6 attempt. Ban for 10 yellows. Looked worn & weary. '08/9 prospects - excellent.
Kerry Mayo RELEASED - good luck mate and sincere thanks. 10 or was it 11 years up and could you adam and eve it? Reserves regular this season. Got a late sub job - 400 apps! Selected again - good form too. New lease of life. Contract not renewed.
Adam Hinshelwood RETAINED - Initially back training after serious knee injury - again! Came thru reserves game ok and figured in early selection list. V late sub in gm 6 - looked strong. Got swollen joint and had rehab - yet more time out - again! Then surgery and must be doing his head in. '08/9 prospects - hopeful of being fit.
JOEL LYNCH Got and signed an extended deal and def potential. Looked good in first matches and if he had a right foot may go far. Injured at lb, came back, switched to c-d in tactical moves. Injured leg again at lb - out some time. Did hamstring then started 1st choice lg1 - was getting back to best. Mares and lost plot - big disappointment. Hamstring prob. Sub, shaky but scored and was reg 16. V good c-d but mare then injured again. Started last - ok. '08/9 prospects - good.
Adam El-Abd OFFERED DEAL - An old hand now. Took on destroyer mf role but struggled with distribution. Filled in at left back. Benched - carrying injury. Then put in cent def - done a job. Sound efforts in rearguard and kept Butters on bench. Got 2 goals and about time. V good displays but form variable - shaky ones at lb/rb. More m-f holding role awhile. CD fine but would poss struggle in Champ's. Mr Utility or what? Ban for 5 yellows. Injured knee - out a while. Won't sign immediately - why not? '08/9 prospects - fair play?
DEAN COX Operates on left flank but can do other roles attacking from cent m-f. Got ball skills and a shot. Needed to up it if team could profit from his selection. Dun good generally. Ban for 5 yellows. Started - wanted it bad again, netted and after others. Super goal provider but below par. Twice dropped for being naughty. Half decent without showing best form - off boil but got better. Short on goals and maybe reached a plateau. Tried to cut it in run-in. '08/9 prospects - faces competition.
Alex Revell TRANSFERRED - Started as front man in 442 and forever jumping and chasing. Got more flair than to be a mere target and coulda chilled a bit and think clinical. Lost form and was on bench. Not used to advantage by type of strike duo employed. Scored with JR as partner. Subbed. Hernia and surgery. Scored for reserves on quick comeback. Was on bench, started again. Goal then hat trick. Scored again and fine. Worked hard. Injury last app. 150k move to Southend.
NICK FORSTER Big disappointment on first dropping to third tier and got roughed up by basic cent defs. Was selected each week but proved something of a luxury. Didn't seen to click with our style. Was out injured. Back as super-sub and hit two super-duper scores. Sensational in some games. Upped the ante, scored reg and finished strong. Yet another fantastic brace - on fire. Doing his thing again, or not as usual. Fantastic display then ordinary or below ave other apps. Given captaincy. Building partnership with Murray but needed more goals. Got 2 pens to halt barren spell. Scored 2 Motd winners at home. minor injury. Poy runner-up. '08/9 prospects - first choice.
STEVE THOMSON Scots signing for cmf who got a couple of seasons. In Oatway mould and a bit gobby and all. In prime, puts a foot in and anything else but a hand. Luvs sea air, likes Brighton and hates dirty northern playmakers. Half decent displays in middle and can get better. Tidy performances of controlled power and principally a ball winner. Didn't gamble and go forward - why not? Needs a playmaker partner. Lucky not to get a red for agro. Injured, back and struggled but fair versus midfield Lg1 opposition. Pushed on and mighta even notched one. Then nightmare but ok rest of run-in. Was getting there. '08/9 prospects - och aye!
Dean Hammond TRANSFERRED - Was not cutting the mustard by his own hot standards. Got ability to operate as powerful engine room but slight crashing of gears. Drove on again - sound efforts and more holding role. A-ok displays, converted penalties. Champ's class and good all round. Then bit of a mare but sorted - injured and missed. Sent off early last app. Banned 3. Transferred to Colchester.
Gary Hart RELEASED - thanks for ten pukka years. OGH, oh no! What could he do to figure this term? Had surgery for groin prob. Turned out reg for reserves and looked fine. Final year and owed a testimonial. Good advert for non-league hopefuls. Went on loan to Oatway's, Havant & Waterloo. Sub - ok. Sent off, ban 3. On bench waiting a chance. Got it as right back. Injured. Contract not renewed.
John Sullivan RETAINED - no 2 keeper and not even warming bench. Loan prospect coz any imported goalie puts Kuipers in reserves. Kicking ok but decision making and ability to keep it clean need improvement. Where is motivation to kick on? Needs games somewhere. '08/9 prospects - borrowed elsewhere.
Guy Butters RELEASED - thanks old boy and good luck. On bench for cd coz he's a bit slow but at 1-0 up we needed him to keep it clean. Had calf injury, his head is actually harder. 650 apps - Jesus walks on water. Great career. Could coach in future. Started again - ok but injured. Pro job as emg rearguard and did net odd one. Contract not renewed.
Paul Reid RELEASED - all the best cobber. Came on as sub in opener and didn't exactly set place alight. Probably best in a confident, winning team going forward. Had to stamp authority in middle or wither on vine. Groin injury. In reserves and a waste of talent. Sub then started cmf - bit weak. Off sick. Hobsons choice and injured last app - had he blown it? Went thru motions in SSC final. Contract not renewed.
MICHEL KUIPERS First choice keeper as of old. Earlier beaten regularly and musta felt choked. Wants pressure from being custodian of a successful side rather than stopper or blocker of basic lower league fodder. Brilliant at times, luvs us too. Fantastic stops but caught cold from winter blitz and bit dodgy - much better later. Is senior player and can help young squad. Tantrums but lasted as no1. PoY 3rd. '08/9 prospects - hands on.
GLENN MURRAY Big 300k signing from Rochdale, 24yo lg2 striker who can get goals. Tall and fairly good in air, ok on the floor. Could be a real asset and great expectations. Gotta try to achieve Champ's levels of quality striker - make and take goals. Brace in full debut. Finding feet at higher grade in big club with massive fan base. Has a brain but needs more service on floor to exploit talent. Lot on shoulders and can he deliver under pressure first time in big boys league? Massive challenge ahead. Scores and obviously got an eye for goal. Hold up ok but no pace and wants coaching to up aggro level BZ style. Disappointing few games - bit languid. Bit too clever sometimes for Lg1 colleagues.
Sam Rents RELEASED - have a good one son. Got the left back spot initially and wanted to keep it. Put over a half decent cross too. Was on bench but good at cent back/ lb & lmf in seconds games. On pro's treadmill as utility prospect. Recalled and tough time. Long way to go and out with washing - sub last. Booked in tough SSC final - did ok. Contract not renewed.
Jake Robinson Looked to get wide right posn but an enigma. Dropped to bench and kinda a super-sub. Bit of a mover and shaker in reserves. Started again as striker and hard luck not to score. Off the mark at last in JPT. Looked v sharp - 1st lg goal and 'should' add reg but didn't. Then super strike - likes a dig or two. Pretty ave generally - bruised foot. Dropped - oh dear! Been too cosy on home turf, needs some time and space away. Off boil in seconds. Got goals but not good ratio. '08/9 prospects - relocation.
Joe Gatting Dropped down strikers pecking order. Was on loan to Woking - dun good. Gets goals in reserves and ok there. Useful display in SSC final against tough defenders. '08/9 prospects - non-league.
Nathan Elder TRANSFERRED - Sub striker in first 3 fixtures and did ok. Good in the air and notched reg in reserves but had limitations. Hold up coulda been better. Started JPT and needed games to improve. Gotta be reg sub for experience. Grabbed stoppage equaliser in heroic ten man draw. Started - v ave. Went to Brentford for 35k.
Tom Fraser Started in rmf on opening day - subbed but not disgraced. Did a good job in unlucky defeats. Sub in games and something to offer. Strolled in seconds matches and maybe lost some kids desire. Back on it as sub - tough but that's squad use. Started again and tried hard. Got booked for it, fighting for a place. Done good in heroic 10 man draw - took responsibility well. Ban and sub - ok. Injured again, back and was holding place. Signed again. '08/9 prospects - scope.
Doug Loft RETAINED - Had to up it this term. Put it all in for seconds but didn't quite click somehow. Box to box and maybe best in an attacking team set up. Sub app - notched a v late equaliser in FAC1. Injured in training - choker! Started again - iffy. Injured, back in resvs and ok . '08/9 prospects - upgraded!
TOMMY ELPHICK On a steep learning curve and still climbing. Got some football there and not just clog. Doing mans job and grown up fast. Racking up vital apps then injured. Back to it and booked but not a dirty player. Hernia prob and crocked. Thrown in again and not disgraced. Not 100pc but useful prospect, could be effing immense - concentrate lad! First goals and good form. PoY 1st. '08/9 prospects - rising.
Scott Chamberlain RETAINED - Youth product - was on loan playing at Bognor. Great goal in SSC final. '08/9 prospects - difficult.
Wes Fogden RETAINED - Nice kid who got good reports from Dorchester. Put on bench. Made debut in JPT s-f at Swansea - no pressure then! Half decent display so might lead to more sub apps. Started Lg1 but subbed early - tactical. Sub last app and booked. On loan - Bognor. Mom in SSC final. '08/9 prospects - in balance again.
David Martot RELEASED - bon voyage (Seagulls follow the trawler!) Suffered from Frenchie abroad syndrome. Ran about and was a bit of a holiday on the wing or thru channel. Injured back. Started again - shoulda scored, then did ankle. Another goal but overall we wanted 'integrated' performances. Subbed reg - could do much better defensively too. Injured in training. In 16 at times and okish. Cruised in SSC final.
Matt Richards EXPIRED - On loan and got lb posn. Shaky displays in first apps. Jury was out from clean sheets in defensive stalemates. Better later, v good in parts but then a slightly dodgy bit. Got steadier with games, had some flair. Not truly convincing B'fans, was defence his real game? Went home, came back. Gotta nail those wingers or stay in East Anglia. Improved and almost a wingback. Attacking tendencies! Then got hamstring tug. Back and ok.
Shane McFaul RELEASED - good luck Irish, can you score goals? 21yo from Dublin Uni College outfit UCD. Was at Notts Co then Stateside. Rep Ireland international U21. Tall midfielder and loved our emerald AONB footy future. On bench for 89 min. Mighta been thrown in but wasn't. Injured. Didn't impress in SSC final. Contract not renewed.
Jonny Dixon RETAINED - Little Aldershot fan reaction to departed Blue Sq champs player. A scoring striker at non-league, got 8 goals there. Sir Richard got him for 55k and apparently cheap at half the price, if top reserve on hot stand-by. Injured ankle, back for reserves and ok. Started - subbed. Jury out and got to have a chance to silence doubters - hard task. Subbed in SSC - off the boil. '08/9 prospects - reserves reg.

Dean Bowditch EXPIRED - Came back on-loan after having injury prob with groin last season. Ran about a bit and had some football, so mighta extended stay. If he scored, maybe signed - got 11 shirt so fig in plans. Not too bad and subbed last app - showed flair. Groin prob again - oh dear! Went home.
Therry Racon RECALLED - 23yo from Charlton and originally played in France - well he would have, being French. Straight into midfield and competitive, wanted ball and did his stuff ok. Got headers in too for a shorter pro in rough boys game. Decoupe la moutarde or what? Absolute mare home debacle - oh dear! Seemed to run out of gas from hour to 90 min during run-in.
Ian Westlake RECALLED - On loan from Leeds and hoped to plug a hole in midfield. Was originally with Ipswich but swopped in deal with ex-Albion Harding - who? Went straight in and needed desperately and all, given we wanted loadsa points. Half decent displays and also did fairly well in wins and away in sloppy team defeats. Could shoot too. Injury. Mare in home shock. Scored and subbed reg but better last apps.
Sam Gargan RETAINED - Young pro who has hit a goal or two at kid level. Was out on-loan at Bognor etc. Sub app at end of season. Not convincing in SSC final.
Lloyd Skinner RELEASED - young pro who liked to play a bit - but by other hands not for BHA.
Sonny Cobbs RELEASED - young pro with defensive attributes. Super display in SSC final and great c-d pairing with Pearson. Those two were A ok - you heard it here first!! Unfortunately others disagreed.
Chris Winterton RELEASED - no 3 kid keeper.
